hey this is the current configuration of my laptop:

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6600 @ 2.20GHz (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 4028MB RAM
Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Manufacturer: Intel Corporation

Do u think ill be able to run civ 5 and see the beautiful graphics i have seen in the early videos of the game?

Civ4fiend, welcome to civfanatics if you did not get a welcome already!

Your laptop should be able to run civ5, but you should expect some choppy performance. With a slow processor and meagre video processing capabilities I would definitely not expect anything fancy from that laptop.

Unfortunately no. Intel doesn't make gaming video cards, but it will be playable on lowered setting. The rest of the machine looks OK though.

-=Mark=-

I wonder if my old desktop will be able to run it.

It has got a 2.something dual core processor from Intel, and a pretty good graphics card, but only 1 GB of Ram.

I can run Empire Total War, and would think that Civ 5 would not have as high of graphic demands than it does

If not, I guess I better start saving my money for a new computer, it is about time anyways

Based on what you state here, your laptop should be able to run the game. however, you should expect some serious choppyness, especially later in the game.

Thanks Shurdus, it makes me optimistic, but is your opinion is based on educated guesses, or do you have any inside knowledge about the game?

Firaxis claimed that it would scale well and was designed to be playable on laptops, I doubt Shurdus has inside knowledge and even if Shurdus did he wouldn't share that fact

Just hoping my current laptop will be able to play civ5 without sucking/crashin/melting my cpu

AMD Turion x2 64 2.0ghz
ATI Mobility Radeon 3100 graphics (integrated
3gb ddr2 RAM
Windows 7

My CPU runs over 60°C idle, and over 80°C with a load

I really wish Firaxis would have developed for DX 10 instead of 11; I only have a DX 10 capable card and I don't want to be stuck in DX 9 mode!
You can buy dx11 cards for under $100 now, and i'm sure you could get some cash for your current card. (Just not from anyone on CFC-they're all buying dx11 cards too!)

Apparently the DX11 will help even if you only have a DX10 capable card.

Interestingly, one of the key discoveries was the need to completely discard memory allocation. Once this was done, the CPU spent much less time waiting for memory. Also, DirectX 11 will be a big benefit for users, even if they don’t have DX11 capable hardware. The API itself is much more heavily threaded, and even DX9 and DX10 hardware users will see performance increases with DirectX 11.

You can read some more about the engine here: urlremoved/2010/04/08/civilization-v-engine/

You will be able to play in full DX10. DX11 is just an add-on for DX10, so if the game's coded for DX11, it will have all of the DX10 and DX10.1 commands available.

DX9 is a completely different API and will support only DX9 or lower.

So, you will get full use of your video card if it's only DX10 or DX10.1. You just won't get the added DX11 stuff.

does someone actually know what the specs are?

I have a laptop with core 2 duo p8600 2.4GHz and an ati 4570 512MB and 4GB Ram.

Would it work and if it does am i gonna wait 10 hrs for the AI to complete their turn. My old laptop had the graphic glitch in Civ 4 where the ground was black. Don't want to buy it if some steam issues are sorted out to find the thing wont work.

looking at all this , it looks like no laptop computer is strong enough! i wanted to pay around 500$ for a laptop when the game will go out. do i have any chance considering my brother in law is the manager of a Future Shop (canadian version of Best Buy). Just sold my strong desktop one that could have run it...now i'm left with a crappy
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ ClawHammer 1800 Mhz
DDR Kingston K 1024 MB PC3200 (200 Mhz)
NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go 64M

Ouch...

$500 is still budget if you want a gaming monster. Be sure to get a laptop with plenty of Ghz. More the better as a general rule. There are slight differences between chipsets that make this rule a bit more hazy, but it is a good guideline still.

Also do not forget to get a lot of RAM. I would suggest never accepting anything less than 2GB, but I would advice 3GB or more.

If you want more specific advice, I suggest you post the specs of the laptops that you have your eye on and we can tell you which one we would prefer to play civ on. :)

Unless you travel all the time, desktop PC has much much better price performance ratio.

500$ notebooks are mostly junk when it comes to gaming (slow CPU, not much RAM and mostly integrated (crappy) GPU).

Why not ?

I would have thought if you announce a release date they would know even minimal specs.

Everyone is making (hopefully) educated guesses. But aside from the obvious questions that you should know the answers to anyway (yes, your core i7 with a high end graphics card will work, or no your 704 MB of RAM isn't going to do the trick), no one is saying anything that should be taken as gospel. Actually I find it kind of hilarious how long this thread is given that no one really knows what the specs will be yet.

if i look at the any PC at future shop i have this one for example. I guess my brother in law could reduce it 100$ for me...

I just want a hdmi video output big screen and run civ 5 at middle settings . i guess they'll be cheaper by september...

I put my PC in my living room on a small console table beside the fireplace.

as for gaming i have a baby, an Xbox, a Wii. I only play PC for Civ
