I'm pretty new to the world of tablets, but I'm thinking of buying one. I already love using my iPhone as a personal little TV and web browser, so I thought why not step up to a tablet?

My first question is the big one: Windows 8, Android or iOS. I'm leaning towards Android but I'm not 100% decided yet.

The only thing holding me back is the possibility of getting a tablet/laptop hybrid thing ( not sure what those are called ) that could allow me to hook up to my LAN via Ethernet ( with one of those USB/Ethernet hubs ) and stream Steam games in comfort. Is that practical with a Windows 8 Tablet in the $250-300 range?

Anyhow, any advice? Ideally I'd love to do that Steam streaming thing but, at the end of the day, if I can do web/Netflix/Hearthstone on it I'll be happy. Thoughts in this price range?

Well $300 is easy, the following are the only tablets which don't have awful screens for which you can expect OS updates that are under $300:

$255 - 32GB 2013 Nexus 7
$300 - 16GB Nvidia Shield
$300 - 32GB iPad Mini 2 Refurb

Of those, the Nvidia or the Apple will have better performance. The Nvidia is probably the best PC->mobile game streaming experience available on any platform, though you need a compatible video card and and probably the controller which runs an extra $60. Apple refurbs are very good, they come with brand new battery and external shell - IMO you're a sucker for buying new Apple products. The Android tablets are both 16:10 screens, so they'll be better for tv/movies, the iPad is 4:3 which is better for web/reading.
