Paris in December
It is a cold winter and the streets of Paris are covered in snow. It is beneficial that the weather is cold, for soon the land will turn to fire and brimstone.
Doctor Laffitte is proud of himself. He has successfully kept his captain in the dark on the cargo that they brought to the outskirts of Paris. Every night he has been injecting Captain Meissonier with various chemicals. This has included memory loss and even an indirect form of mind control. Yet the captain's skills have been needed, as suspected. Hordes of pirate ships attacked the Corbeau on its way back to Earth, and the amount of repairs needed was astounding. Someone had tipped the scoundrels off. Doctor Laffitte smiles as he looked out onto Paris, the Corbeau's engines rattling. The Eiffel Tower was soon to appear as a dwarf.
The Corbeau lands on the outskirts of the white-covered city. It is greeted by several government officials. Captain Meissonier is proud to have delivered the artifacts safely to government hands. Doctor Laffitte smiles to the men, but they don't smile back. They are completely expressionless. Doctor Laffitte is suspicious. He wonders about his safety. He becomes paranoid. One of the man speaks, "My dear Doctor Laffitte... thank you for returning our Captain to us." Laffitte turns quickly and peers onto the coat of one of the men. He sees a golden seal with wings emerging from an icon of the Eiffel Tower. The Sky Captain Society. Laffitte begins to run, but hears a pistol cocking. Laffitte pulls from his coat a vile of chemicals and throws it onto the side of a snow-covered rock. Smoke goes in every direction. When it clears, the doctor is nowhere to be found. The man with the pistol yells, "Find him!"
Captain Meissonier is confused. He confronts the men. "What the hell is going on here?!"
"Jacques... we have learned of your doctor's plots. He was planning to steal the Corbeau for himself. He has been feeding your entire crew chemicals of all kinds."
Captain Meissonier faints. It doesn't matter.
The men take the crates. They move them into another ether flyer. They take off. Their destination: Strasbourg. A few hours pass. They arrive at Strasbourg to an entourage of military personnel and other members of the Society. The boxes are unloaded into a covered warehouse. Alexandre Dodart emerges from the Society's massive ether flyer, and Captain Meissonier awakes from his daymares. They wonder what is going on. Alexandre Dodart feels normal, but in reality, he is not. One of the Sky Captains walks over to him, and invites him into the warehouse. Dodart complies.
Dodart begins his work, under pressure and under influence from... something. His skills are put to good use.
Months pass...
It is now February. Captain Meissonier has been flying around France in his upgraded Corbeau, under the belief that Dodart is working on an outstanding scientific achievement. He is to return to Strasbourg on February 7. He does so. He is greeted by the same entourage from the Society, all smiles and cheers.
"Watch this..." he hears. Time passes. They celebrate. Then a piercing noise can be heard. Meissonier feels his ears might explode. The others cover them up. The noise becomes louder and louder. Massive plumes of smoke begin to rise from the warehouse. The rattling of machinery can be heard. Gears turning. Hundreds of men begin to run from the warehouse, panicking, telling the others to flee. They do so. They go to the top of a hill. "Just as planned," one man says.
The top of the warehouse explodes into the air. Sitting there is a figure. So far away, but it looks so close. Meissonier is frightened, for the first time in a long while. The smoke rises. Higher and higher. The figure rises. It is massive. It is unfathomable. It is something from nightmares. The figure takes a step, and the ground rattles uncontrollably...
Aerial gunboats are seen flying in, moving in unison with the massive mechanical creature. They are headed to Germany.
