I don't know if this is possible, and I don't think it has ever happened in any Civ IV game I've played in (at least, not that I noticed).

What happens if multiple civs acquire a "freebie-granting technology" (one that gives you a religion, a great person, etc) on the same turn?

So, for instance, if three civs learned Meditation all at once, who would found Buddhism?

I'm guessing that only one civ gets the freebie and it is determined by something annoying like player number (from the game setup screen) or how much beaker overflow you have.

You would because the computer turn....thing checks you first, then the other civs

You're talking about single-player games then, right? I guess that makes sense. Haha. Eat it computer. But what about multiplayer games?

AFAIK, the different civs "play their turn" in a hidden order, and the human player is always the first to play. So, if you discover a tech the same turn, as giantraven already said, you will get the freebie bonus. The other civs have an order, too, and don't play simultaneously.

This was how it worked in Civ 3, but it isn't the same in Civ 4. In Civ 4 it looks at the number of overflow beakers you produce in addition to completing the tech, and awards the freebie to the civ with the greatest number of overflow beakers. Similarly in the event of a tie for wonders it goes to the civ with the most overflow hammers. This works the same in both single player and multiplayer.

So what if overflow is equal?

In multiplayer its the number 1 players turn who gets it. some as who would win first, so if you play a multiplyer game try to be first.

Well technically it wouldn't be just first in order, it would just be the sequence. There really wouldn't be a tie, since everybody takes a turn, it would just be whoever turned the beakers first, since they are "collected" from the cities right before your own individual turn. For example the guy you're playing against ("X") gets up, it says he has 2 turns left, he finishes, hits enter, and it comes to your turn. It says you have 2 turns left, you finish, hit enter, then his beakers are "collected" and he now has 1 turn left. When the sequence cycles around again, he will actually be the one who gets them "turned in" before you. So in reality there is no such thing as a tie. I would assume this is how single player works as well because even in SP, there is an order, it just isn't revealed (to my knowledge).

If anyone has information to prove/disprove this THEORY, could you let me know. I'm pretty sure this is how it works and it makes sense, because everybody's turn doesn't ACTUALLY occur at the same time.
