Term 1 - Nominations for Trade Minister

I'll give my voice in here, two simple questions;

1) Which is more important? Luxuries or startegic resources?

2) What will you give in to in demands? (ie; luxuries, money, cities, etc?)

May the best candidate win! :)

Personaly, I see that Strategic resources more important than luxuries. With stratigic resources, it enables our civilization to build powerful units that would help us take down our enemies. The only things that I would give into in demands are Luxuries and money. Cities are out of the question.

@sarevok

i would have to say, it would depend on the resource, if in the ancient age it was iron i would say No as they themselves would not have a very good attack force without it. if it was horses it would be different, because until cavalry horses dont make that much attack difference the only benefieit is movement. later on Saltpeter will be a definate no as they would then have the ability to build muskets and cavalry. basically the only resource which i would consider giving them is horses, or resources which are 'out of date' e.g. saltpeter when were just getting infantry and tanks.

@GA

1. it depends on the necessity of the resource and the number which we already have, for instance if we are miles away from anyone and there is no immediate demand for our 4th piece of iron we would however appreciate that nice wines to the left to enable us to complete the building of our wonder or whatever.

2. generally i would only give in small amounts of gold, territroy maps and only into the later ages will i give up our world map, i.e. when pretty much everyone has a view of the entire world. i would only give up luxuries depending on the circumstance. i.e. poor military, loads of said luxury. cities are a big no.

Debate Question:

If the nation is being threatened by an strong outside power (lets say... Zulu), yet you believe we can make peace with them by giving them stuff when they demand it, would you go to war against this stronger foe or continuously give into their demands?

I am not sure that scenario is a call for the Trade Minister to make. However, depending on the proximity of Zulu forces(if that can be determined), I would most likely appease them the first time out and then be very vocal about increasing our military forces STAT. In my personal games, I very rarely give into threats from the AI, but the Zulus or Aztecs were sharing our borders and applied this tactic, I would give them what they want. Once.

Also, after we "give in" the first time, I will be very vigilant about finding trade deals that would benefit both ourselves and the Zulu Nation. This way, they may not be as quick to come a knockin' for freebies, and forcing us into war. ;)

Still not my call to make, though.

I have a question for both BCLG and DZ. Would you be willing to have a helper in the department to a persion who has asperations on becoming a minister?

Of course, any help would be appreciated, im not saying i would especially need it without it maybe stopping my ability to do my job. i would however welcome anyone who wants to take part in to the trade ministry as volunteers can only help.

Three questions I'm going to put in every nomination thread (except FA, as I'm running there):

1. Are you running for multiple positions?

2. If you answered yes to the above question, what positions are you running for, and in what order would you accept them if you win multiple elections?

3. If this position is not your first choice as answered in question 2, why should we vote for you here, knowing that our vote may be wasted if you win another election?

1. Yes
2. FAs. The order that I would accept is first Trade and then FAs.
3. I am looking for a backup incase I dont win eather Trade or FA.

I saw this in the presidential thread so thought i may as well ask it here as well.
what level do you generally play at and how often do you win?

i generally play at monach leveland win pretty much all of them, i am trying to make the move to emporer, i only really try emporer during GOTM's at the moment, a big maybe is that my favourite civ is Japan and it is the one i use most often.

I seem to have fallen a bit behind here..........

From Ginger Ale:
1) Which is more important? Luxuries or startegic resources?

For the first term, strategic resources will be much more important. While we should try to secure an early lux for our own happiness, we shouldn't concern ourselves with a surplus export goods until Map Making(and Harbors).

2) What will you give in to in demands? (ie; luxuries, money, cities, etc?)

I would only like to give away small amounts of gold to an aggressive civ, and only once. But as I've said before, this isn't my call to make. I will be vocal in all rival assessments, however, and will post my thoughts on which civs are plausible threats. I really don't want to give our hard-earned gold and techs away.

From CivGeneral:
I have a question for both BCLG and DZ. Would you be willing to have a helper in the department to a persion who has asperations on becoming a minister?

Sure. makes my life easier. :)

From Bootstoots:

Three questions I'm going to put in every nomination thread (except FA, as I'm running there):

1. Are you running for multiple positions?

Nope. I am commited to the Trade Department only. :)

2. If you answered yes to the above question, what positions are you running for, and in what order would you accept them if you win multiple elections?

Not an issue with me.

3. If this position is not your first choice as answered in question 2, why should we vote for you here, knowing that our vote may be wasted if you win another election?

Again, a vote for Donovan Zoi is a vote for someone who is dedicated to this office only.

Ooops, and one more from my opponent, BCLG100:

I saw this in the presidential thread so thought i may as well ask it here as well.
what level do you generally play at and how often do you win?

While never completing a game, I have been successful on Emperor to the point where I determined victory is certain. I believe I could hold my own in a Deity game, but haven't had the time to make that move yet.

Also, I am one of the few that pushed for us to use our collective experience in DG5 to rise to the challenge of an Emperor game. That goal failed miserably, however.

I think al BCLG100, Civgeneral and Donovan Zoi looks like good candidates. I would like these to identify how they will coordinate activities with the other departments, in particular the Foreign Affairs Dept, on how to organize resource trades, gold trades and tech trades, and in some cases even worker and city trades, with other civs.

Another critical question is where they envision the trade dept to operate in terms of creating reports on the efficiency of the various trade deals they do for future accountability in assessing the administration after term 1.

Furthermore, how will they organize the Trade Dep internally and externally, how frequent would they poll decisions and what reports will they make.?

Lastly , would you consider trading iron to any other civ? And for how much would you pay n order to get iron, compared to the costs of mlitary and cultural wars.?

not too good with the quotes so.
1. i would make use of both governmental threads, discussion threads and if need be PM's, i see very few resource trades occuring in the first term as it is unlikely that we will have a trade route up and running or anything to trade. i dont really understand what you mean by gold trades, if you mean paying for technologies then depending on the viability of the trade (e.g. not a few hundred gold for something were going to get in a few turns anyways) i would post a discussion on it and then post links in both the trade and FA's thread and any other thread deemed appropriate.

2. fo you mean where as in the place, if so the trade department will probably be concentrated in both the citizens and goverment forums, and of course my civ game :)

3. to begin with i doubt polls and discussions will needed tobe posted very often unless we run into a civ, upon which i will assess all viable trade deals and post them highlighting the ones which in my opinion most benefeit our country on the whole. internally i will have the trade department thread, as well as having use of my deputy (should i win), if that person is also a non US citizen and cant stay up late every t/c i shall as quickely as possible try and appoint a chat rep, however if this first term gets kicked off quickely the first term should infact be no bother, as it is the summer holidays i can go to be whenever i feel :)

4.No i think is one of the most important resources in the game and the only reason i would give it up would be say if the whole of the demogame was against me :), i think that if any other civ should recieve iron it would just escalate the probability of war.

Personaly, being called a good canidate brings tears of happyness to my eyes :'-). I have never been called that in a long time. Ill answer your question while holding my tears of joy inside myself :).

1. I will work along side the major departments that deal with techs, domestic affairs, FAs, and the military department. With the Science Department, I will work along side the leader to see what techs we do not have and explore what the other civs have. With the domestic affairs department, I will wwork with the leader to see what maxumum gold limit I have to use and also to see which cities are unhappy to search for luxs. Along side with the domestic department, I will check the save for any resources that have been overlooked or just poped in (After a discovery of a tech or a random event that causes a resource to pop up w/ stratigic resources.). I will personaly work closely to the FAs department since both Trade and FAs deal with inter-civilization affairs. Ill works along side the FAs leader when we need to sign treates that would have to deal with us eather getting something or us giving something to them. Ill also work along side him in determaning whether embargos are a good idea for the situation.

2. Since Term 1 will see us as encountering other civs later in the term (Since the majority of most DGT1s are usualy isolated untill eather late in term 1 or mid term 2). During this period of isolation, I will constantly check to see if there are any resources that are elegable to be connected and would work with the domestic department to draw up settler plans that revolve in eather having the resource next to the city or build it 2 tiles away from the resource and develop the city's culture.

3. As I said in answer #2, we will be in a period of isolation up untill we meet up with another civ. I will be posting reports on what we have and what we dont have in terms of resources. Once we get contact with a civ, I will check the save and post several possible trade deals and post both a poll and a discussion on them.

4. I beleve that trading iron with another civ would be flirting with disaster. IMO, I beleve that it is a no-no to trade any stratigic resources that would enable another civ to build military units to be used against us.

Good questions all, Provolution. I may not have time to answer them all however, as RL beckons. :(

Basically, I would only confer with the FA during peace agreements, I would never give up Iron until it is devalued somewhat(I am talking Industrial Age, or inter-continental during Middle Ages - aka no threat to Japanatica), I could keep a running tally of proposed and executed trades, and would poll every time there was an import or export available -- even if it is just for gold.

Sorry so short.....

Donovan Zoi

Remeber that Iron can still be used for both a vigilant airforce and a navy, never forget that... Other than that, I am ok with the answer :)

another reason i would not trade iron is that it can also be used for railroads, this would allow the AI to move any forces into easier attack posistions.
