Don't get around much anymore
That time has come round again, and the duke finds himself wearing his electoral commissioner hat, adjusting it to a slightly more rakish tilt in the mirror, and setting off around the provinces to check up on the new candidates for government positions.

We seem to be doing quite well, apart from some unhappiness trouble and the ongoing arguments as to which wonders should be built where. But who deserves to keep the job they have been doing and who would do a better job? Please nominate your favourite candidates for each position: is there anyone who can explore better than Jayne or drunkenly play the turns than civ1-addict? You are allowed to self-nominate, to nominate more than one person for the same job but try to avoid nominating the same person for more than one job. Other people may want to nominate your candidate for another job but don't nominate the same person for every single job. And don't nominate me for President because I can't play the turns on Playstation! :)

I shall keep editing (or asking Duke to do it for me) this post so that you can keep up to date with who has been nominated for which positions. Please note that all nominations must be accepted or refused by Friday and the list below will show you who has repsonded in what way to each. U means unknown - they haven't replied to their nomination, A means accepted and D means declined. As easy as that! Nominate away!

President:
Jayne A
Octavian X A

civ1-addict D

Domestic Advisor:
GaryNemo A
duke o' york A
Ren A

Mordheim D
Dell19 D

Science Advisor:

Military Advisor:

Ren A

Ainwood D
Dell19 D
Heliogabalus D
Duke of Marlbrough D

Editor is not considered an 'official' elected position, so it doesn't affect the other elected positions. I will, however, let you all pick who you want to run the paper, so it can still be voted on. DoM

Newspaper (The Fanatical) Editor:
powersg A
Octavian X A

I already talked to Gary about this over PM. We're doing fine right now the government is running smoothly so really there shouldn't be any problem with this government to continue as it goes.
However, I would like to give other people a chance to actively do something in this game out of posting so I would like the (relative) new posters to have a chance to run for government. That's why I say this: if nobody else wants to be president, I'll do it another turn. But I would like to nominate Jayne for this function who has done so well as a foreign advisor in the past month. :)

jayne for foreign advisor
garynemo for domestic
leo for science

tentative nomination:

civ1 for president

I and the people I stand for are apalled at rumours that talk of the debasing and devillish influence of drinks on our elected leader. Not that the Temperance people would support it, but they would at least avert their eyes from a president who succumbs to the Potion of Pandemonium privately. In office, however, any work "under the influence" will be met with unflinching eyes, stalwart opposition and calls for impeachment!

[In straight words: The above refers to "drunkenly play the turns... [:] civ1-addict?" by doy above. I did not get what he is referring to, so I strongly suppose he is kidding, but if he ain't, well, I am DEFINITELY not supporting a president who might, booze-inducedly, shift the entire nation's production towards triremes which he then sinks in the futile attempts to reach Overseas or decides to build warriors in each city "so that we are well defended". I don't think you would do that, but if you did, I wouldn't want you in office. No offense... :)]

OK. I got it. Read the turn thread and realized that it was definitely "private boozing". Well, I thought so. I hope I haven't offended you, civ1, and hereby change the status of your nomination for the presidency from "tentative" to "definite".

A settler was bought in ThunderFalls for the combined price of 79 gold. [etc]

I was only joking anyway!
I trust civ1-addict to keep our nation on the straight and narrow, though I do suspect that we'll have more trouble from his attempting to convert this game into a Civ 1 demo game than from being drunk in charge. Now walk along the white line and touch your nose with your right hand sir, all while singing the alphabet like Big Bird. :D

I am honored to accept the nomination for Domestic Advisor.

However, you others please nominate yourselves, and then win at the polls. You've all heard about the 'Real World'. Well, I've just cleared a major blockage and have many weeks of work on which to apply my workaholic autocratic methods. So I'd rather be Deputy. Btw, Fyi, I do not drink. Brb. Lol. See, I'm learning!

heliogabalus, I nominate you for whatever you fancy. And where did MonkE go? Or Mordhiem? Dell19, want to run for ... ? Ainwood? Please step up here. Btw, I mean to slight noone.

I've taken the liberty to solicit advice from an experience group of friends. Democracy Game Conundrum

Further, some of you may feel inadequate to meet this crisis. I know I do. Consider playing the Civ2 Game Of The Month. I've learned a huge amount there, and those people are nice, too. This month is King, we get a River, it's simply excellent fun, and you have two weeks to finish. If you don't know what "Charging Settlers" means, get over there and start playing.

I'm extremely surprised to be nominated for president!! I'm a bit apprehensive - but I think I might bite the bullet and say 'I accept your nomination'. I don't want to do it by default though. I'd rather run against someone, so if no-one else wants to, Civ1, will you run?

I also accept my nomination for Foreign Advisor. I've really enjoyed doing it.

I note that currently there is no-one nominated for Military Advisor, so I suggest Ainwood again. I think in the next term we might meet an AI.

I'll run against you and be quite pleased to be your vice-president. My vote goes to you!

As for military advisor: I nominate Heliogabalus, he was the deputy foreign advisor in the first term and did a good job. Let's see what he can do in reallife! ;)

I greatly appreciate the trust the people of NUF have shown in me in allowing me to serve as your Science Advisor these past few centuries. I am humbled beyond words that there may even be a call for me to continue in this capacity. I'll defer to the better judgement of our good citizens and accept my nomination to be Science Advisor again. Wishing only to provide the best opportunity for our great nation to continue to thrive, I only feel it my duty to ensure that there be better choices than mine on your ballot, so I nominate Mordheim (again-where DID he go?) and Civ-1 Addict (assuming he isn't president) to the post of Science Advisor as well.

Aiiiii, I must decline all those nominations. I thank you for your trust.

When I have less work for university on my hands, I will try for an official position again. Until then, I'd rather pop in unexpectedly and try to be a good citizen.

Re my career as deputy foreign advisor: I didn't really do much. But we were a good team, weren't we? *nostalgia*

This is what I had hoped for: two people who want to be president. I want a new person to be president so that as many people as possible can truely enjoy the game. That's why I pull out of the election for president. I wish both Octavian and Jayne the best of luck in the elections. :)

I'm not very good at all at the science tree of Civ2 and therefore am not a good science advisor, nomination refused.

I see Jayne is the only person nominated for foreign advisor, I would like to go back to that office too so I nominate myself for the position of foreign advisor.

Wow - things are going quite well so far!
I don't know if Duke has enough time for a cabinet position but I shall nominate him for Military Advisor anyway. And Dell19 as well! Why not! I'm a nominating mood! :D
I shouldn't do this to myself as I'll end up having to edit the top post each time but hey. I've got a feeling that the Defence ministry will have more to do this term, with the Indians and the Vikings both in the area.
Sorry to hear that helio hasn't got the time to take a role this term but your studies are definitely more important, however much fun the Demo game is. :)
Before my burst of energy runs out and I go back to slouching at my desk, I shall nominate philosopher12 for the position at the foreign office. :goodjob:

I nominate duke o' york for domestic advisor. He manages to keep this thread tidy and well composed so I think he will do a good job as domestic advisor! ;)

Thanks for the nomination :)

Unfortunately ( :( ) I can't really accept this, as I'm going on leave ( :) ) for a week in October, so can't really do the job justice.

Congratulations on those nominated though, and good luck in the forthcoming elections! :goodjob:

If Octavian is running for President, shouldn't the position of Newspaper Editor come up for nomination. It's already been decided that he is going to hold that position for the next term, but I thought the Constitution said that no-one could hold two positions (unless one is deputy). I would have thought that the newspaper editor would need to be impartial, and therefore not a member of the Government - or have I totally got hold of the wrong end of the stick?

Duke - If you do decide to open the Newspaper Editor up to nominations, I nominate powersg as he has written a couple of good sample articles so far.

Dell19 for Domestic Advisor - now that's a great idea. I also nominate Ren for Domestic Advisor. Nice to hear from you Ren, and although I DO NOT agree with you on this Monarchy thing (My campaign slogan: , Happiness for all, Pottery before Monarchy), I value your considered opinion on all matters, even this one!

duke o' york , if you run for Domestic, you will win. For this reason, I nominate you for Governor of the new River Province, perhaps to be named ... Barsoom.

FYI, Duke, civ1 has declined the nomination for science advisor as well:

My studies, my studies, my studies (*whine*). They should be _some_ fun too, and I've evaded them for so long. So what am I doing here now? I need a disciplinarian to chain me to my desk and keep the door locked. Anyone up for the job?

Starlifter - military - invading Iraq currently? What a shame! I hope he'll get out of there well. Foremost, I hope my little chain of association is without all factual base (sounds awkwardly worded; correct me, I'm a foreigner!) and that he is not in there at all.

So we're really going to elect the Newspaper Editor? Strange, but probably necessary for the reason you pointed out, Jayne.

Ren, *D* means "declined".

Barsoom? Any connection to Eddie "Barzun", headmaster in "Ferris Bueller's day off" (phonetical spelling)?
