Term 8 Defence Minstry: War and Peace

I did not clear the barbarian camp this turn because I think classical_hero's orders may have been based on a misunderstanding. If you still want it cleared, I will do that next turn.

As far as hooking up saltpeter, I would not hook it up until we intend to use it. The only thing that can happen if we hook it up early is that it could become exhausted. We should definitely hook it up by turn 163 or so, but my inclination is to wait until then.

For KISS to get to our saltpeter, they would have to move units into a jungle tile and stop. We could bombard them and attack them. They would then have to move onto the mountain and stop. We could bombard and attack again. The following turn they could pillage the saltpeter. Quite honestly, if they can do all that and keep their stack intact, then we have bigger problems than the loss of saltpeter - they probably could just destroy all the towns in that area instead of going for the resource.

I'm not a big fan of defense. The way our land is structured, we cannot be attacked directly - someone would have to enter our territory and give us the first attack. I would prefer to slaughter all attackers and never even worry about defending - if we have enough offensive units, then we don't need any defense.

EDIT - And actually, we can continue building hoplites until we have our Golden Age even if saltpeter is hooked up.

Excellent work there Mr President. Yes they were based on confusion. :goodjob: Clear the camp just before we settle that area. Whenever any barbs show up, we should bombard then strike with a reg Medieval Infantry.

Those are both good ideas... but personally I'd vote for something a bit more... intimidating.

Here's a wiki link for great figures in Greek Mythology.

I particularly like the idea of using Olympian Deities or Titans for the names…
After all these Knights will be our Cavalry... our main attack force for our first war!!

Olympian/Primordial/Other Deities examples
Apollo
Ares
Artemis
Demeter
Hera
Heremes
Chaos
Chronos
Pontus
Tartarus
Hybris
Nemesis
Triton
Zephyrus

Titans
Asteria
Atlas
Crius
Hyperion
Prometheus
Rhea
Themis

Anyway- check out the link for the whole lists!

When do you want saltpeter hooked up? We are still a while away from Military Tradition so there is no hurry to hook it up for cavalry. I don't think we are in any rush to hook it up to upgrade hoplites to muskets. The only question is do we want to build cannons once we get Metallurgy, or do we want to build trebuchets and upgrade later?

I would only hook it up once we are about to get MIlitary Tradition. We need to have enough workers there so that we can doo it one turn, which I think will be nine since we are not industrious.

I am thinking that is might be good of us to have a plan to try and disconnect the source of Saltpeter for KISS because we will want it down just as our war is starting.

If Classical Hero would like to defer the naming of Knights to my office – I'll gladly take that job. Just brace yourself for imposing sounding names :D

I concur with waiting to hook up our saltpeter resource. I'd like to start moving some of our weak producing towns over to building bombardment units. It'll be much easier for us to build 30 shield trebs in those towns, and then pay the 20 gold to upgrade those to cannons.

One quick note about the saltpeter:

KISS's opening moves in the war will likely be focussed against our saltpeter. We must take care to defend the source against a massive onslaught on turn 166. I would think it wise for us to make sure we've got it hooked up by turn 162 or so, that way we may use it for 4 turns to do the upgrades, and it won't be a disaster if KISS strikes on 166.

30 gold.

Also, i see no reason to hook it up yet, but by turn 160 we will definately want it connected, since KISS are an intellgent group of idiots, and thus they will aim to disconnect our Salts ASAP in a war.

Remember that we will have first strike at them since we are ahead of them in the turn order. Anyway if they try to pillage our source of saltpeter before then, then they will have violated the agreement and basically it is an ac of war and thus we will be able to attack them. One thing is that they will never be albe to reach the in one go since they will have to go through jungle and this will take out their full movements, even if they have calvary by then. Then they will be sitting duck and open to wholsale slaughter by our troops, so I would be very suprised if this was their target since it would not be a very attractive option because they would not be able to get it in the first go, which would need to be an objective for them. Of couse I will not rule it out all together, but since we will have fast troops by that stage, any attempt would be very risky to say the least. So I would not bbe too worried about this.

This is a general remind. Alway look at the OP because I am constantly editing it wit usefull info so if you seee something important there, you can raise up the issue for greater in depth detail if you want.

I like the format of your opening page

IMO ... We should upgrade Hoplites soon after Saltpeter is hooked up which would be around 164ish .

Gen_W can you post your military build strategy here too ... proper place to discuss atm.

No answer in Domestic thread so I'll ask it here ... Navy ???
We know KISS have a substantial navy ... if we war with Nuts we will need one also ... To protect, with ships that can sink either foe with greater efficiency ... and transport troops.

We currently have only 2 cities with Harbours ... enough??

> Tarkingrad on Southerncoast (western side)
> Heron on southern coast (middle)
> NOTHING on East coast which it the nearest to Nuts !!! ... Should there be one ???

If Navy is considered something to increase, how many additional ships should we have?

And bear in mind only at this stage 2 cities can build them strong.

my two cents: Considering how many shields a Harbor takes to build, and how wasteful our eastern cities are, it doesn't seem to make sense to build a harbor in the east. We could pop one out of Athens quite quickly if we decide that we need a large navy.

But right now, I don't see the need for a large attack force. Naval units are so evenly matched at this technological level, it will be quite a while before we can afford to invest in a naval counter-strike force.

anyway, my two cents :)

I agree with your view peter. It is really a waste right now for us to bee building a navy. We need to wait until we are about to get Magnetism befor we can get better units. All we need right now is for our navy to be scouts for us so they spot the enemy before they can attack. Remember that they do not have Astromony yet so they will have to end in the coast at the end of the turn making it unlikely that they will be able to attack without distrubing us and blowing there cover. Also it would be better for them to try and protect any losses they will have from the attacks that we will do against them.

I would still like to send a hoplite over to Eureka Stockade to replace our knight. Does Defense agree? If so, can Foreign request permission to cut through Dnut territory to get there?
