At first glance, it's Minecraft's single player mode turned into a 2D MMO. At second glance, it's Minecraft's single player mode turned into a hilarious 2D MMO. The guys doing the Let's Play mention a rod where you can move dirt.

I've seen a number of Minecraft clones or inspired games, and most look pretty terrible. Terraria looks heavily-inspired by Minecraft, but it also looks like it could be a fun game in its own right.

It seems more action-oriented than Minecraft, which might be fun for people who enjoy a faster pace. I think I could enjoy that now and then. The extensive list of things you can craft is appealing too.

It could be a great alternative for people who don't have computers capable of running Minecraft.

Has anyone else picked up this new indie release?

At first glance it looks like a 2-D rip-off of minecraft however you soon realize it's anything but. Sure it's pretty obvious it took some inspiration from the sandbox we all know, but that inspiration pretty much ends with crafting. Terraria is more or less a dungeon adventure game that places you in a randomly generated 2-D world and let's you do whatever you please. This usually entitles battle monsters(including boss monster), and getting rare and powerful loot. This is one of the first games in a little while where I've felt like I really had to earn something good. For example one of the best guns (yes there are guns as well as "magic") requires you to, if I can remember correctly, defeat at least one boss, cause a series of event to occur that drops a meteor then harvest that meteor, then survive long enough in the underworld to find a hell forge to craft it, and that may not be everything. The only problem I have so far is some interface and GUI options, other than that it's a fun game that is definitely worth the $10.

I picked it up the other day. I'd say it's definitely worth the $10. Very impressive for only a few months work.

The problem is in exactly recommending it.

It's like one part old-school NES platformer, one part old-school PC platformer (e.g. Boulderdash), one part minecraft/Dwarf Fortress, and one part endless gear grinding (a la World of Warcraft).
Plus the online multiplayer which I guess is very much like any grindy fantaasy WoW, but I haven't really seen a 24/7 server yet, so not interested in trying that.

I could see a Dwarf Fortress person not liking it, despite similarities. And I could see the old school NES gamer getting bored with the lack of a tight storyline.

Right now I'd say it's worth exactly $10, and will probably be worth more with expansions/updates.

I don't know how many people on CFC have actually bought the game due to lack of activity in this thread. But I finally got a working MP server. It uses Hamachi. If you interested just say so and I can PM you the details. However I am going out of town until Saturday.

I might be interested. What is Hamachi exactly? Is it virtual server hosting?

I've gotten it after watching Coe's Quest (A segment of let's play series on Minecraft, and he just started doing a lets play of Terraria)

Though when playing, I always turn off the music and play this song:

Link to video.

(Eventhough it's not minecraft. But hey, at least Terraria does not have God Damned creepers and spiders.)

Biomes (more like zones that biomes) = Regular, Corrupted, Sky island, underground jungle, deep earth, underworld, dungeon. (Everything but regular, sky island, and deep earth are challenging areas)

Things to make = idk, but a lot
Items = A LOT more, ranges from lightsabers, to shark-guns (have gun, half shark, ALL AWESOME), to the ability to cast down falling stars on your enemy.

I'm not sure but I would think there's at least 300 items in the game.

EDIT: 300 may be a bit much.

Considering quite strongly a buy.... How many biomes, monsters, things to make, items etc.?

This game seems less about building and more about exploration, so it needs a lot of these..

I'd check out the Let's Play videos and wikis if you're on the borderline of purchasing.

It's a lot like an endless boulderdash-Roguelike sandbox game played in 2D. It's not quite about slaying monsters as it is that monsters are like creepers---things that can annoy you and prevent your exploration progress.

You're right that the game play is primarily exploration since the main point of the game is exploring to obtain resources for crafting to upgrade equipment. Biomes are more like window dressing and rewards for exploring (either horizontally or vertically). There are vertical biomes (floating islands, hell, underground jungles) and horizontal biomes (a dungeon, an ocean, an area called "Corruption"). The typical biome is really forest, and then there are some small seas/lakes, and some deserts (full of sand which is a falling hazard if you aren't careful digging).

I'd say it's very much like a 2D minecraft except they exploit the 2D platform aspects to the fullest. So if you have a 2D retro fetish (e.g. like jumping,, then you'd probably like the game, but if you prefer 3D then you might want to stay with Minecraft.

Building is secondary but still significant since as a sandbox game you can build absolutely however you want. You can completely redesign the map and use the game worlds as kind of a design your own platformer kit.

Leveling your items for crafting is pretty secondary too. It's basically like copper axe -> iron axe->.....gold axe-> named axe (like a roguelike). There are some special items in the game like swim flippers, snorkels, goggles, grappling hook (very useful), rocket boots, etc but a lot of it is basically sword, axe (weapon/chop trees), hammer (build tool), pick (digging), bow/gun. There's also alchemy and some magic.

All in all its pretty rudimentary right now. Being on Steam, and since they aren't officially supporting modding, I'd expect another few months of development followed by DLC.

However some items (including good ones) can only be found by killing monsters. And also monster slaying is one of two ways to get money, which in the early game, can be quite useful. And I still don't think it's fair to compare it to minecraft, it's just too different.

Is anyone interested in a multiplayer server.

Thanks for the input, it seems to be just slightly under the treshold of a sufficient amount of content for me though :( At this point seems like it would become repetitive quite fast.

I'd say there's enough content for the time being, for $10, because it really is the journey not the location that makes the game. But not enough content to be truly a classic like Nethack.

Is anyone interested in a multiplayer server.

I'll look into it. So how are you setting up the server exactly?

I was expecting to buy a few games this week-end and hoping for a few good sales.... Turns out there was nothing so I gave in. I am now an owner of this game. My first plan seems to have failed though: I wanted to build a wooden hours underground. Can't do this!? CAN'T? That's not a word I want to hear people. How do I build underground? I can't put wooden walls?

I think you have to remove the cave wall in the background somehow before you can place wooden walls.
