In the Civ 2: Test of Time load game box there is an icon which says "Do not open me." Has anyone opened this and what does it do. I'm poised like Bart Simpson near a "Do not press" button everytime I load a game but chicken out in case it eats my computer or something.

ah c'mon do it...live on the edge

You know, don't you? You know what happens? Please tell me. I'm too chicken to find out for myself. The temptation is eating away at my very soul but still I can't bring myself to open that file. I must know what it does!!!!!

No I don't know..but I'd like to ;)

Go for it.Its not a bomb.....is it?

I know what happens!!!!!

Everyday I used to load up ToT and wonder what happened if you tried to open the do not open me.sav. Then one day I did and was disappointed to find that it didn't do anything. All I think it said, was that it was an unrecognised .sav or something...

Do not trust Dell!
Obviously, he hit that button, and his computer blew up. The trauma has driven him insane, and he lurks these forums, luring others into the trap he fell into, so that he is not alone in his pain!

He's right it's an unrecognized file type. My guess is it is where the game saves the install information for the uninstall. Shouldn't cause any problems trying to load it in ToT

Ok. I did it. I could stand the vile taunting no longer! I opened the damned file!! Or rather, I didn't open it.

"Failed to load game: File is not a saved game."

What's the point of it, then? Why put it there if you can't open it? It serves no purpose. Why isn't it hidden away with all the other files? Why put it in the load save game window if you can't load it? Why is 'dyslexia' such a difficult word to spell?

Did the Copyright Violation Department show up yet?...you're in serious trouble.

;)

It must serve some purpose.

I don't have ToT, but I'm sure it has some purpose only the game itself could use. Why would it be there for nothing, anyway? It's not a cat.

I'm not sure if that file has any use whatsoever. The file is zero bytes in size!
If it is used at all, it's either some kind of placeholder that says where the ToT directory is (I doubt that), or it tells ToT what extension to use for savegames (I doubt that too)... There really is no plausible explanation for an empty file with a silly name. Any use it could have would be much easier to do in other ways (by putting the stuff in the registry, in civ.ini or in the civ2.dat file).

All I can really think of is exactly that it's just a silly joke.

This is very odd, why call the file 'do not open me' if you can't open it?

What does this file do, if anything?

I'm going to delete it and see what happens.

Risky...

I think Mercator is probably right. It does seem to be a joke because it doesn't actually do anything when you run it but it causes so much torment before you run it...

I have deleted the file.

Played for about 1 hour, saving, exiting, reloading, everything seems to be working perfectly normal so far.

This isn't as much fun as I hoped.

The Manual tells you on page 8 the little grey box. "Do not try to open the file named "Do Not Open Me.sav". This is a place-holder file that the game program needs; it is not a saved game." Quotes around the file name are mine it had it in bold. My suggestion is that the manual isn't that evil.
