The Russians started a nuclear war with me, I thought the AI wouldn't use nukes unless I did first Well the stupid thing is I have more nukes then them, the SDI, and now Japan and America both nuking them. What are the chances the AI will start a Nuclear war? I have like 50~60 games under my belt and this is the first game I have been nuked first. They were the second most powerful nation until they did that. They didn't have the SDI so now there irradiated goblins

The AI can be fatalistic when cornered I sometimes think its a programmed behavior if they have nothing to lose.

It can work. In one of my old old PTW games, OCC Russia declared war, and half my empire revolted because they were ethnic russians, crippling it.

I am the big dog on the map but they had like 15~20 metros when they went nuts...hmm maybe I had so many units they realized they didn't have a chance Or it was because I sacked 5 metros the turn before.

My guess is that there is a fair amount of randomness to and nuking by the AI. Even the last gasp DOW is not certain or predictable. I have had them to OCC and no one else in the game, while I finished something and some times they declare and some times they just sit there till the hammer drops.

I can only assume Russia had poor relations with almost all the other nations at that time. Has the UN building been built yet?

I had built the UN ages before my little war with the Russians. There is almost nobody left in this game the Russians got wiped out by the Americans after I left them alone(I had 65% of the world). I would say everyone had really bad relations with Russia at the time. I wonder if they nuked me because I destroyed there SS(they were almost done)

that I'd say is actually correct, and goes along with my assumption. As they were second most powerful (I can only assume the second ballot for the UN vote), and had bad relations, they will almost definately lose the election, therefore lost that victory condition. If they just lost their space ship, and almost completed it, they just lost that condition, the only ones left would be to beat you down until you were weaker to them.
As they couldn't do that militarily, they just wanted to soften up you defenses with a nuke. When everyone hates them, why really worry, as they'd probably all align against them anyway.

I never knew the AI to be logical like that, but in this case, I think they might've been
