The Ancient Mediterranean MOD (TAM)

I tried this mod out last night on the included 8 civ map. I must say that recently I've lost interest in Civ3. It's a great game, but it had grown stale. Playing this mod immediately restored a sense of excitement. I started as the Phoenicians, and when the Hittites attacked me, I REALLY felt like I was rewriting history.

Anyway, the point of this post, other than heaping praise on the creators of the mod, is to suggest announcing this mod where more people will see it. Or maybe change the name of the thread to "Ancient Mediterranean Mod v 1.0." Is there a place to post reviews of mods?
I can't wait to download the new map.

I just wanted to take the time to thank Thamis and all the other contributors to this awesome mod!

I agree with the previous post: This mod has rekindled the excitement in Civ which had somehow been lost over time!

I also second the idea that it would be useful if the mod's exposure could be somehow increased, that more people would become aware of it! Now that it has an installer, installation should not be a problem for those who might otherwise steer clear of such a mod.

Keep up the great work!

Hey Thamis, incredible mod. Definitely has brought back my interest in CivIII which had wained a bit.

One problem, I have made it to 1665AD as the Babylonians and the game just quit while the computer was making its moves. No error message or anything it just kicked me out to the desktop. I am playing on Windows XP. Any thoughts? Anyone else experience this?

Thanks,

Vivo

Just wondering if more siege engines are going to be put in? A seige tower, trojan horse, ballistae...don't know if any of these are appropriate to the times or perhaps some others?

Side note, I think we should have the ability to upgrade earlier on in the mod, such as spearman to phalanx and broadswordsman to longswords etc.

Regards

Vivojack:

This may be what my friends and I call the 1.29f bug. The game will just randomly crash, and if reload, and do everything again, you can get past that point (unless it is re-occuring). I have noticed this with the DyP mod, as well as my own. I checked everything in my mod and cannot find any errors, yet it still randomly crashes on me. Probably something to do with running out of RAM or something. . .

Vivojack:

This random exit thing is a known issue to me, too. I even hacked the savegame, revealed the map and checked at what point it could exit. Sometime it was just some unit moved to some direction.

My "solution" to it is:
a) Load the last autosave and turn the "preserve random seed" off.
b) Save it, load that new save again.
c) Play your turn again, but try to do some things differently (especially unit movements near enemy territory, the computer reacts most to those).

Sapon:
You are right about upgrading. Right now I don't have any FTP access here due to the university firewall. I can make unit upgrades possible earlier, of course.

Siege weapons: Difficult. The Trojan Horse is quite stupid I think. I mean, it only worked once in history. Ballista would be the next one to get in. BUT: There's no non-copyright ballista graphic, and I will not include any copyrighted material anymore.

The roadblock to upgrades is having the barracks available earlier. The upgrade paths are there, for the most part, but without a barracks it is impossible to upgrade. Maybe make it available sometime in the Hellenistic era.

Or alternatively, let Palaces produce Veteran units, which would also mean that they would allow unit upgrades (I'm 99% sure - not 100%).
Then everybody would have to go to the capital to receive training until Barracks become available - kind'a cool, IMHO

AFAIK, the only issue with copyrighted material is if you are distributing this mod for money. So if this mod is on the upcoming expansion CD, the version that comes in the PtW box can not have any copyrighted material, but an immediately available patch for that version could have copyrighted material in it.

Danielhart:

Yes, please write one! I will work on the civilization then. In my new university we have a great library with loads of information on history. I think I will be able to use lots of it. I'm not sure of how much time I will have besides doing my own studies (no, it's not history...) and having some time off, too. <g>

Justus and Isak:
I'll go with Isak's idea. I like that. I'll do that.

Nder:
No - copyright is copyright. A company can successfully intervene if we have any copyright material in here, even for free. I mean, you're not allowed to copy CD-ROMs and give them to your friends for free either, are you?
It seems like the stuff we already got in there doesn't disturb anyone, but I will keep the next releases copyright-clean. I already have a copyright-clean version of it... ;)

but what I am saying is that the most you could expect is for them to bring an injunction against you to stop you from distributing their material. It is of course your choice. :)

Hi Thamis,

I haven't actually played this one yet, but I will. I do have a few comments, though. I have downloaded and installed it (at work to see what it contains - haven't gotten a chance at home yet, just discovered the mod).

I appreciate the work you put into streamlining the setup and play process, but I would rather not use it myself, unless you can assure me that it's safe. It seems to automatically back up and restore my original Civ3 setup, and that immediately brings up two questions. First, will it work when I have DyP installed on top of Civ3 and second, how do I recuperate form a crash - which sad to say happens once in a while. I like to have control. I personally also like to install from zip files so I can see what they contain before I do the install. But that is my personal preference and others differ.
Please tell me if this would work:
- Install your mod
- Install Civ3 + 1.29f
- Make a backup copy of the wole install (to allow me to run the original by renaming the directories)
- copy the Art, Scenarios and Text from the Ancient Med install into the Civ3 install folder
- Uninstall your mod (if desired)
- Play the game as one of the scenarios you have supplied

I miss a readme that explains the setup and gives an overview of the contents. You have some info on this thread and a reference to it, but we don't all have constant access to the internet. It would have been helpful to have basically the info in the first post of this thread in a readme.txt file. It should also explain the difference between the various bics in the Scenario folder, explain that people can play random maps with this, and give some info on the scope of this mod. It is possible that your play setup explains some of this, but as I said I like to have control.

Your tech tree is a good deal smaller than the original and I assume that the time period is different. How have you dealt with this? Do you have the same number of turns as the original and does it still run from BC 4000 to AD 2050?

There is a downloadable map on the first page of this thread but no explanation of how to use it. Do the bics included in the mod have maps? I would assume so. Also, I get the filename "ancient" when trying to download it, so there's most likely a blank space in the filename. I would advise editing out the blank space(s), or alternatively please specify the filename.

You should consider adding a version.txt file to the mod, so that people can see what they are playing when they use it. It would have to be managed (backup, restore) like the other files. Your mod overwrites so many vital files that you can't play a standard civ3 game when it is loaded, so you might as well take over the version as well. If you're really fancy then I suppose play.bat could copy the original version.txt to a backup file and then append your version text to the text in the original file.

Finally, it is obvious that a lot of good work went into this and I look forward to trying it - when I get the time. Keep it up :goodjob:

Robo:

You've got quite a lot of good input here. I'll go through it:

Generally, the play.bat backs up all files that are being replaced by the Ancient Med. The backup is kept in place until civ3 has successfully quit. If it crashed - no problem. The play.bat stops as soon as you have launched civ3, and you have to press a key to make it restore everything.

DyP: The only thing that could be replaced are unit graphics. I know that DyP uses some units that I have in the MOD too. I don't know what graphics it uses, though. So if you want to be totally sure, you have to do it the way you said. Make a copy of civ3 and copy the MOD directly into it. Works fine.

There should be an info.txt that basically has the first thread in it. I think... A version.txt is in the Ancient Med folder as well. Or it should be, at least.

The map that you can download on the first page is just a temporary solution to a problem. You have to download it and replace the map that comes with the MOD with it. The map that comes with the MOD has miraculously lost all new resources...

The tech tree is smaller. The time frame is 8000 BC to ~600 AD. The time that is shown in teh game will go from 4000 BC to 2050 AD. It is not possible to change the time frame in CIV3 yet.

The file that you are downloading is supposed to be named "Ancient World". But how it is called doesn't matter because it's a ZIP and when you unzip it the filename will be correct anyway.

I have had much input since version 1.0. I will include whatever I can in the next update. I have changed to a new course in a new University though and I'm not sure of how much time I will have. But it can't be that bad, can it? ;)

OK, but sometimes my PC hangs completely and I have to switch the power off. I guess I could copy the cleanup part of play.bat into a cleanup batch file that would restore everything.

Probably the safest way.

I coudn't find any readme for the mod as a whole. There is a credits.txt file in the Ancient Med folder.
version.txt belongs in the Text folder - check your Civ3 installation. I really think you should use it.

Do you mean I have to edit the bic and replace the map?

Thanks, thats good to know.

Yes I know, but I couldn't tell what the file type was. The filename i got was simply "ancient". This is a problem with the download setup here (and at Apolyton as well). It might be because I like to use Opera, but so do a number of other people. The problem goes away if there are no blanks in the filename, or alternativey I could edit in the filename myself, but I need to know at least the file type.

What? The lack of time, the mod or my "constructive criticism"? I'm sure the mod is fine, but it would benefit from a more detailed description, as I stated earlier. You could look at it as marketing material ;) And we all need to cater for that annoying real life. As to my comments, I try to be constructive but can be a p.i.t.a. sometimes. Just ask Isak or Kal-el ;)
