The Best City Improvements

I was expanding my empire the other day, and found that when I took a city in civil disorder it was made much happier when I built a marketplace and then a bank than those in which I built a temple and then a colosseum. I know that the people are happier when they're prosperous, but for these financial improvements to have more effect than the "happy" ones seemed ridiculous. Especially as I keep getting screwed by my bank.

Have we all forgotten the lowly Aquaduct and Sewer? Your stock exchange probably isn't worth the four gold support in a size 8 city!

DEATH awaits you all...with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

My favorite improvement is the one I need now. Most often that's a Temple.
City walls are a joke unless you're playing multiplayer. There are always more important things to build. Even in multiplayer they're a joke after your opponent has espionage. Might as well sell them off as see them destroyed by a spy.
Building city walls early is ridiculous. Build more settlers and quit worrying about defending crappy little 1 and 2 point cities. Expansion is the name of the winning game. If you have to build city walls to defend against AI, you're already guaranteed a poor score. Buy them off with gold or tech and build more cities, and you'll soon outgrow them to where you can demand payback.

Early in the game, improvements that generate money and later in the game ones that improve my science ability to gain techs quicker.
