The best Civilization game...

Considering the mixed reaction Civ7 has gotten someone should redo this meme for that.
Somehow I would consider it more on the outright hate and loathing end on the spectrum.... mixed was passed quite a while ago.

Civ 2 didn't accurately predict the future, so I've made a few changes. Instead of the Cure for Cancer, I made YouTube to make people happy. The Internet ended up being MUCH more important than the SETI program. I added Aerial Drones and Rocket Artillery for late game, and Zeppelins (flying aircraft carriers) and biplanes to early flight. And I've tweaked movement so that it doesn't take 800 years to move an army. Zones of control and unit stacking risks still prevent the faster movement from changing much.
That's because it ran on what can only be called the liberal religion of the 90's..... fresh of the supposed victory over Communism and the euphoria of "the end of history" where everything was going to be Star Trek..... it was a weird time.

I quit playing Civ 3 after about a year. The computer just kept trying to make peace--it didn't want to conquer the world. I heard that got fixed with the mods and "Complete" edition, but I was on Civ IV by then, when I enjoyed a lot. It's the last Civilization game that was as fun as Civ 1 and 2.

Civ 1: Fantastic game and knows what it's about.

Civ 2: Reskin of Civ 1 with usable graphics. Only two problems: 1-Building your palace was WAY better than the throne room--and it didn't have a linear finish point. 2-Meeting with Gandhi or George Washington was more fun than meeting with their heralds. They fixed this in all later versions.

Bro I compleley agree with what you're saying. The global warming prediction in Civ 2 is SUPER stupid, for example. How do I try your mod? Have you checked out our Open Source Civ 2 project?

I thought Civ IV had the best graphics, but Civ 2 is WAY more fun than the other versions.... But could be better. I agree with your changes, and also have several others of my own. I should compile a list at some point....

Really? I tried to play civ II again recently. The city in disorder as soon as a city grows felt like they were forcing you to experience a city in disorder, since I don't know how to predict it. I much prefer the grace period of civ III of one turn for cities.

For my mod, you pretty much just paste in a new RULES.TXT, UNITS.GIF, and a couple of sound effects. I'll post a link to a Google Drive folder with it all.

Regarding Zeppelins--yes, it's a name brand, like Roller Blades, but it's what people know and it sounds awesome.

The newest change I have, which is not well tested, is reducing the cost for Legion, Riflemen, and Marines, and inserting Marines as the upgrade path for Riflemen. The logic there is that World War II and modern combat had TONS of infantry and Marines are the only modern infantry. They should actually be used in-game. The other COMPLETELY new change is Naval mines, which have zero attack, slow movement, can only defend, are tied to coasts like Triremes, and have high firepower.

There are a couple of other minor text/logo changes, like Leonidas as the Greek leader (just because it's my son's name).

Heads-Up: All siegecraft can get past city walls (like Howitzer), but are slow and require protection. Defensive units are stronger, so you either need to be basically an age ahead or use 2 catapults to crack a city. Also, cities grow and build a bit faster. I think I changed everything for that from sets of 10 to sets of 8.

(Mods, please politely warn instead of ban if I'm sharing incorrectly.)

Versions are formatted "vYY.M.DD". I didn't include anything older than 2025 since I've only recently made new changes.
v25.2.13 is basically what I've been playing for two years.
v25.5.1 has the cheaper infantry and changed upgrade paths.
v25.5.17 has the highly experimental Naval mines, but I moved unit order and screwed up sound effects. Also, I need to remove the pink outline around the mines (transparency editing problems).

Installation: Just drop the contents straight into your Civ2 folder. Please make a back-up of the entire directory first.

No problem with what you're sharing as it's great! :) However this is a joke meme thread that's turned into a why Civ2 is great general discussion, so you really should be kicking off your own project thread (where people can follow & give feedback on your work as you release new versions), then change your comment here to link to that thread.

How do you change a wonder without it crashing? I tried to make the Superdome a wonder once, a long time ago, and it didn't work.
