The best thing about civ 1 is...

I love doing that, but I wouldn't say it's the best thing...

Hey, I'm not the only civ1 cheater
smile.gif

You're tweaking the .exe file too. That's not good. Sid Meier won't appreciate

Railroads on ocean?!?! That could hardly be possible (although I don't have Civ1).

Impossible? Nothing's impossible my friend. Of course, it depends on the platform you're playing on. On the Mac, there's a freeware tweaker which allows you to modify the .exe file. For the PC, it's a bit tricky I suppose but I don't know really. Somebody say that you have to tweak your saved games. Anyway, you can do amazing "miracles". Clearing all the map at the beginning, kill a civilization, next turn discoveries, more money, ground units on water, and even boats on land (my favorite cheat, since battleships can go on land and attack ground units with their superior firepower...

)
Now, I think it's wiser to play a normal game and not cheating.

Sorry to disappoint those of you who don't already know this, but the railroads on ocean trick is actually quite simple and harmless. You just load a settler into a transport ship (of any type) and put it out on the water. Put the ship on the square you want to build a road or railroad on, then press u to unload the settler. Of course, they may or may not actually be land nearby, but that isn't important. When the settler starts blinking, press r. As long as you don't move the ship until the settler is done, you've got yourself a road, and later a railroad. These roads cannot actually be tranversed, like bridges, but they DO increase trade production on those squares.

and food and shields if it's on a whale, or something...

Plus, u should use the infinite settler trick, finish everything in one year. That's another thing I like in CIV1
lol.gif

That settler trick is technically a cheat. (shakes finger)

Just a question. What's that settler trick? I've not heard about it. Or perhaps I didn't know it was called like that.

Perhaps but with Macintosh version you CAN. It's fun to let your tanks cross the ocean, destroy an enemy unit and then get back home, in 1 turn...

The settler trick is (mis)using a thing they didn't think about in the PC-version of Civ1 anyway.
Once you've pressed I, R, M, F or P to start working with a settler, you can click on it to activate it again. Keep doing this over and over again until the work is done in one single turn.

Don't get into the habit, it's pretty boring. To irrigate jungle for example, you have to do this "I click click I click click I" 15 times. You can come with a horde of settlers and make every single square around a city irrigated & railroaded in one turn...

But it's cheating, just like railroad at water, TTG.. *shakes finger*

Oh, ok. Heard about it. But never used it. On the other hand I usually use the city build trick: open close open close a city and clicking on the construction button until the building is complete. It takes a while, too, if you want to finish (for instance) a pyramide in 1 turn!

Hey I don't consider building railroads on water to be cheating, because it's actually a lot of work and you don't get much in return, just a bit of extra trade...

Railroads on ocean???
shakehead_ron.gif

Isn't this becoming boring; it's so unrealistic!

that's neat! has anyone tried doing that in Civ2?

Sure you can do that in Civ 2 but not with a settler. You turn on "Senario mode" and then "change terrain". You change from land to ocean a spot that already has roads or railroads. I don't remember if you can use them though...

Granted but the topic was saying "the best thing..." no matter it's realistic or not

Anyway, who knows? Perhaps one day, these would exist. After all, there's already the Eurostart railways linking UK to France...

Hmmm....I would have to say that to me,the best thing is how my superior German civilization beats the French over and over again...with only 1 exception.

On one occasion they beat me by getting to Alpha Centauri before me...but before they did,at least I got to nuke their last remaining city.

Too bad that was my last move for that turn,so my troops couldn't take that city anymore.

And I don't use cheats...can't seem to find any for my version (WinCiv,version 1.20 if I'm not mistaken...can't check from here,it's on another computer, but the 1.2 part is correct, after that,I vaguely recall the 0...)

But Win or Dos...beating those French always makes my day...heh...

I don't know what you're talking about, Blackblood. The Germans and French are both blue on civ1, meaning they can never be in the same game at the same time. Perhaps you are dillusional, or playing a different game??
