No, all of you are wrong the Dromon is the best!
They have the ability and attack level of my old favorite unit the Frigite, and a transport capacity, I couldnt have asked for a better unit.

Forget land units, if have a large navy, you control whether or not the AI players can actuallty go anywhere.

what if you play continents or pangea :p

Jaguar Warrior. The jag rush is devastating, and ensures you always become a major power in the game because your early victories reap exponential benefits for almost the entire game. I don't think any other unit can change so much, have so much of an affect on a civ's fortunes in the game (provided the jag rush is used properly).

tanks and modern armor are my favorite units. you don't need an army to attack multiple times in a turn with this unit. that is way cool in my books.

I agree the modern armour is great for that reason alone. I often have them accompanied by a few mech infantry as they have better defence values. The thing is i still think its the Rifleman at that point in the game i find that you can steam roller your opponent with them.

Out of those here, I chose immortals, but after thinking about the lack of which unit (not counting disbanding the starting settler) would be the most difficult, I realized OCC and no military have both been won on diety, while AFAIK nobody has attempted FRFM (which is close enough to no workers). (Edit: apparently someone has, but still it hasn't been beaten) FRFR was hard enough. So I would say the worker.

I've attempted FRFM. Fell behind in tech and couldn't build anything and my cities were painfully small and it was painful. :(

Come to think of it... you're right!!! Workers and Settlers! I could do without any other unit in the game, but not those two!!!

Small ignorant question: What is FRFR?

@50_dollar_bag, I personnally don't build paratroopers. Well... I do build one or two... but it's just for maniac reasons and they just lay there near my capitol doing nothing.
But there a few players who of build them and finds use for them. If you have enough bombers, paratroopers could easily capture a city. There are written strategy articles about it. Like this one:

.

Here is Charis and Sirian's thread for their FRFR (finally ready for regent) game, and here are the rules:

* Workers may not build tile improvements: no mines, no irrigation, no roads. (No railroads).
* Clearing jungle, forest, pollution is OK. Planting forests is OK.
* Building forts, outposts, radar towers, airfields is OK.
* Our cities may never make use of improved tiles. If we come into control of improved lands, we must pillage the tiles before we may use them.
* We are not allowed to sign Right of Passage agreements.
* No colonies.

Umm Longbowman costs 40 shileds while Knight costs 70. So they are at no point even. Longbownam + Pikemen 70 shileds equals Knight and if paired they have same stats 4 att and 3 def. Only movement counts for knights and the fact they can be upgraded later while Longbowmen have to be disbanded thus wasting production. So i never build Longbowman, just upgrade existing Bowmans and fast try to make them usefull (dead maybe too :P) while still at reasonable att vs deff. As foe units i love Spearman but its not listed - upgrades all the way so it never becomes obsolete :P And besides till industrial age comes I can crash my Iron road with some unit and build Spearman at 20 shields maybe for 3-4 turns in every city and have defence for the rest of the game :P
Longbowmen can be upgraded to Guerrillas. My vote is for the Immortals with Cavalry in 2nd. Immortals rule the game in the Antient Age and are still great units in the Middle Ages. They can make or break a game especially in MP. But Cavalry can difinitely do a ton of damage and are one of the greatest units until tanks come along.

Longbowman for me. Relatively easy to mass-produce, and just bring along trebs and pikes for a good SOD.

Definentely Cavalry, great way to start off world war, plus I always take the bottom track of techs in the second age and trade for the top, ensuring I get early Cavalry.
