The cgannon64 Challenge!

Oh, wait a minute, that's right! Ugh, I hate this. It's so depressing, and to think, I'm not even playing! Is there anywhere you can go? Even a crappy island? I wouldn't necessarily advocate going to war for it, but if you can find some little crany to get into, I'd do it. A city is a city is a city, and can't really hurt you; especially when it's colonizing new territory. Where are you in techs, anyway? And where is everybody else?

Whoa...I think this is my 100th post! It's seemed like so much more than that, though.

Oh, thank god, a second page. My crappy old computer has randomly restarted THREE TIMES because of all of those images loading (333MHz K6-2, 64MB RAM, pray for me). Sorry about the horrendious off-topic-ness. :-)

I'm hoping to find an island in the NE or the West. The Celtic island is too far away; I just need to find an uninhabited island. I wouldn't mind risking a settler on a ship to get there. Thats all I need, anyway. I am almost halfway through the Ancient era, while the rest of the world just went into the Middle Ages. I must trade my way to the top. Tough. :(

Congrats on 100, BTW. :)

ssmith: You don't happen to be in college, do you? And if so, where did you go to grammar school? My sister knew someone from grammar school named Stephen Smith that is in college right now, In Pennslyvania, and I know your town is a college town...would be a funny coincidence!

Cg:

You do need to find a uninhabited island, I would not be willing to take on Gallic Swordsman with Archers. Wish you luck but it looks like a kobyashi maru senario to me.

In which case he should simply use the editor to change the rules. That's what Kirk would do...

And cgannon64 might get a commendation for original thinking as well.

cgannon64:

You're a better man than I. Upon seeing this starting location I would have immediately said, "uh...no," and promptly started over.

Good luck on your invasion!

No, Kirk would see his starting position and pull up the game menu and click "New Game" Not only does he not like to lose, he rarely puts himself in a position where losing is an option.

Well, I'm going to give this one a try when I get home tonight. I meant to yesterday but then I forgot. Luckily I have little to do here at work today, so I have been working this problem over in my head. Things do not look good, but I have a plan :groucho:

Just a couple 'o questions cgannon... what size map is this, and what are the barbarians like?

Also, (I can't check at work) is the save you provided the 4000bc save, or is it the one where you have already been doing stuff? If it's not 4000bc, do you have that save (should be in autosave folder)?

You were the one who started the Star Trek II analogy. Forced to take the Kobayashi Maru, Kirk figured out an Alexandrian method of beating it.

I have no such pretension. I am giving up on this one for lack of time. Sorry gang.

Well...

I tried to play it...

My submarine galleys just can't make it to the other shore... My sailors can't hold their breath long enough to be useful... :(

Nope, sorry. I'm only just in high school.

I normally would, but the start was so horrible I just had to share it. I had to see if ANYONE here could beat it, which it doesn't seem to be happening. I wish some of the top players here (Aeson, Sirian, Sullla, Cracker, etc.) could come and try this. If this was at Diety, or maybe even Emperor, I would venture to say that it is harder than Aeson's map (not that it was easy!). The lack of a nearby island makes it that more important to get the GL, which is quite hard considering the conditions, even with a nice prebuild. The GL got taken in my game before I even had Map Making

Large map, Roaming barbs. I don't like barbs. ;) They wouldn't have mattered on this island, anyway.

I didn't post it, but I'll check. I don't think me doing stuff really matters, anyway: all I did was explore and build one road, and start a mine. That should barely affect the game.

Eh, every turn counts. Especially on this map. :) Besides, this way I'll only have myself to blame when I lose ;)

I'd play it but PTW isn't out here for another 9 days.
Dont suppose you can post a vanilla Civ3 version?

My money's on Arathorn to beat it - one of RBs finest.

Is there a way to make it compatible with vanilla civ? I would gladly do it, if I could.

Oh, col: if Arathorn, or any of the others show up. Maybe you could post a message there telling about this, I'm not registered. I'd be glad to see if some of the top players there can crack this.

EDIT: There isn't any way to get a save file and change it to a different difficulty level, is there? I'd like to get a Diety, Emperor, etc. version of this, something a little harder for the RBCiv guys, if they ever come over. ;) :p

Well Arathorn said he's downloaded it (on page 1 of the thread).

By reputation - well deserved reading his RBepic accounts - he's certainly one of the top players.

I'll look out to see if he posts an account over at RBCiv where I lurkalot. I enjoy playing their epics but never have time to write them up.

You're right, Col, I forgot about that. Maybe he can mention it over there (wink wink nudge nudge ;)).

Anyway, back on-topic: I am about to go play, and here is my new plan. I figure that because war with Celts is pointless now, I should sell contact with them to the rest of the world. It is inevitable that the Aztecs find them, so I figure, if I play my cards right, I might be able to work my way up to the Middle Ages by trade. And, if I can do that, I'll keep on trading and build up a nice Keshik army and wait until caravels. Then its conquer and capital move. Thats my long term plan, but my short term is simple trading.

The Keshik's mountain as grassland trait might actually be useful here. In case you haven't noticed yet, there are large patches of mountains on the other continent. I hope to exploit them in war, keeping my Keshiks on them, getting the defense bonus but still moving regular speed. I'll play now. Good luck to all.

Sorry if I made that unclear; I know of two, although technically three. There is the other main island, with all of the other civs. Then there is the Celtic land, which isn't a continent but an island, and holds about 8 cities. Then there is the tiny rock that I found to the east, which holds two Aztec cities. Not much.

Anyway, I played a few more turns, and more dismal news. My great trading plan failed miserably. I got two techs out of it, some gold, and contact with the Ottomans (they are on the mainland, but I couldn't afford contact before). Thats it. The damn AI wouldn't give me anything for the Celts. My plans are going to be very tough. I hope to hit the Middle Ages before they hit Industrial. Then my Keshiks will be put to good use. Eeek, this game is hard, tougher than any I've ever seen. The start, the distant islands, everything makes it tough. I may not finish this one, my pride will probably stop me from losing miserably. Good luck.

Maybe send out your galleys with a settler each? Eventually one of them will get lucky and get on the mainland? They surely won't have the whole thing settled yet, so grab as much as you can.

I'd do this if my settlers could hold their breath while riding my submersible galleys! *GRRR!!!*
