The cgannon64 Challenge!

Maybe send out your galleys with a settler each? Eventually one of them will get lucky and get on the mainland? They surely won't have the whole thing settled yet, so grab as much as you can.

Oh yes they do. The only patches of unsettled land are areas of mountains, which they cannot settle. Put 8 civs on a 10 civ island (the other must be crammed), even on Monarch, they will settle it by the ADs.

Oh, and don't ask me why I'm online at 8:15 my time. :mischief:

cgannon could you please upload your current saved game, ive been reading this thread for a while and id love to see the game at the mo.

If this was at Diety, or maybe even Emperor, I would venture to say that it is harder than Aeson's map (not that it was easy!).

I agree. The galley crossing was most important in my game, otherwise there would have been no chance at staying close to the AI tech wise, and much less chance of ever making a landing on the mainland. With the changes to difficulty (mod to player's tech rate instead of AI's) in 1.29f, a crossing is even more important now I'd think.

Good luck, looks like fun!

Glad to see you here, Aeson. Do you know if there is someway to change the difficultly level of a save? I doubt it, but if its possible, I'd be very glad.

I think this game is still very hard, but because it is at Emperor, if you manage to get off your island, it will be much easier. Thats the challenge, of course...

Well it's not very hard to do if you can file edit (at least in 1.29f). Not sure what effect it would have on the game though, I've never tried changing it. As it's a PtW save, might be a little while before any of the utilities will be updated to do it.

If it's an autosave, you can open up the save in a hex editor without decompressing it first. I just looked at the save you've posted, and they've changed up the formatting a bit... Not sure where the difficulty is stored. I have an idea, but can't check if it works or not. Here are the modified saves... anyone care to check if it worked? Most likely will not load though.

Here's the Emperor (hopefully) version. Even if it works, the AI's will still have their Monarch starting units as they've already founded their cities. Happen to have the 4000BC autosave still cgannon?

Cracker, why do you visit this forum? You're such a jerk to everyone trying to share in this community. Can't tell if your 10 or 100, as you have the personality of a spoiled 10 year old, and the bitterness of a lonely old man...

has anybody escaped that 'rich' island yet?
Yup, sure did. Not only did I build three cities on the neighbouring 'rich' island (the one with the mountains), but I also invaded and destroyed the celts. At present, I have 8 size seven cities on the desert island, three size 6 cities on the second island, and 10 cities of assorted sizes on the (previously) celtic isle. I have also invaded the babylonians, and I razed two of their cities before my large but foolishly unsupported army was destroyed. My score is higher than the celts, spanish, and persians (tho they're all dead ;) ).

Unfortunately, it is currently 1914ad and I am still using riflemen and cavalry and galleons while everyone except me (and the babs) has infantry, tanks, battleships, aircraft, and transports. So no win in sight, but I haven't lost yet either.

I think I am going to start again. I know in my previous game I have made several large strategic mistakes that cost me a potentially better position in the game. That probably had something to do with playing it for 8 hours straight from 8pm to 4am. Sleep and patience make for a better game.

Sorry Aeson, no can do on the 4000BC autosave. My autosave folder seems to clear itself out occaisonally.

Good to see you at least got off the island, Sparrowhawk. I must admit, I've been playing this game less and less frequently, and instead I'm playing much more enjoyable games. I know I won't be able to beat this challenge, so I've pretty much given up. A player who is pretty decent and Monarch shouldn't be trying this kind of game. Good luck to everyone else. Lets hope we can keep this thread alive as long as possible, maybe someday someone will beat it.

I'd greatly like the save of anyone who can win emailed to me---I'd just have to see it. :D

one is for sure: without reloading you cannot win. I do not play such games.
Actually, there is nothing that is possible with reloading that cannot be done without reloading. It's just less likely. ;)

However, I'm not sure you can even win with strategic reloading.

I've replayed the opening moves 4 or 5 times trying to get the G Lighthouse and G Lib and trying to get a settler to an empty portion of the main continent. I can only ever get the G Lighthouse, and the continent is always completely full by the time I get there.

well way to win is with some editor to enable elimination; by time you find other continets, they all will be dead :)

Screenshots, please!
You'll have to wait until I get home in a couple of hours.

*Sigh*...if I must. I'll just be sitting at my computer obsessively pressing the reload button. This challenge is outrageously addictive...especially when you don't have the game. :-P

This is a really interesting thread and it's really fun follow it.

What I'd really like is if someone could get an equally outrageously hideous start with a vanilla civ3 game and is able to post the 4000bc save. I think you'll find a lot of masochists keen to give it a whirl and follow along. I for one would at least give it a try and post my efforts.

And I'm sure there'll be a lot of spectators watching the bloodbath.

OK, well.... you're just going to have to wait longer for those screenshots. The files are too large to attach (400kb .jpeg X 4), and I can't seem to be able to upload them using the easy file upload system. Any tips would be appreciated. I'll try again tomorrow morning.

just make them be 640x480
instead of 1027x768

or switch them to 256 color instead of 16-bit.
