So I want to start a new game soon and am tempted to try the Combat Mod.

Is it worth it? Is it stable?

I see in game options in WorldbUilder that there area different components.

Which ones are a good place to start or should I jump straight in and use them all?

All of them are great. IMO best one is Size Matters.

Only Fight or Flight and Size Matters are stable and ready for play. The rest you see in the worldbuilder are still under development.

And thanks Sparth! Nice to know my hard work is being enjoyed :D

I haven't played Size Matters, but it sounds like it adds a whole game worth of extra complexity to strategy. If you start new games regularly, I would recommend starting one with just Fight or Flight before you try Size Matters. Otoh, if you're like me and play one game for like ever, then yeah jump in and try both.

It's size matters with some different mathematical rules. If you play size matters and find it frustrating that unit base strengths are sometimes different from the main game, this option would be for you. I advise trying the main size matters first. I might end up making this a mod-mod option for this reason.

A very interesting mod - it is possible to merge and split units, advance them to a higher quality etc. However, combat odds calculated by the game may be misleading. A few times I had a situation when I wanted to use some elite and merged unit (very strong when compared to the base one - 225% strength and 225% HP), it had to attack some other big unit (150%), combat odds were calculated to something about 75% or less and I won almost unscratched. I had no opposite situations - I guess the power of big and strong units is underestimated.

Me and Thunderbrd are trying to figure out how to properly calculate combat odds, but it will take some time - e.g. I have enough background (hopefully) in maths but not enough background in programming...

75% odds can be quite good when you consider that if they win the earliest rounds they'll keep enhancing their ability to dominate with each round. The odds compare is affecting not only your to-hit and damage but theirs as well so anything past 50% odds is exponentially greater by the point towards actually winning the whole combat which differs from the original combat approach in CivIV where it was a bit closer to an actual overall combat win/loss odds. However, ironically, if the unit with the worse odds hits and the greater odd unit doesn't in the first round, then the tables can be turned tremendously so there IS the significant potential for upset.

I remember I was really astonished, so at least once it could be even 25%. I was attacking a merged (IIRC) Composite Bowman in a city at a hill with culture bonus like 60% with an elite Impi (merged once, lots of free promotions, soon after one Quality promotion). Other enemy units had been eaten at a breakfast, so I was surprised by the odds but decided to attack.

That could possibly be somewhat explained by a bug in the combat system that was recently fixed that had been with us for quite a while affecting vs combat class bonuses.

But yeah, you can still lose at 75% - I just had a gorilla pwn my exploring stack the other day this way. lol

Yes, i know - when one attacks an enemy city without siege but with enough ordinary units, one may have a lot of `strange' results (like wins at 10% and loses at 90%). But in this case I cannot remember a single loss. If I have a lot of fights with odds like 97,5% or worse, I may expect at least one loss.

BTW: is there a full and up-to-date list of C2C starting options? I would like to write some explanation at civ.org.pl forum for poor-English-speaking players but I have found only partial lists (e.g. at the Favourite Settings thread).

There is a list on game setup of course but I don't think anyone has done a list here on the forum... could be a good little project to have done. If I can find some time...
