The Deity Challenge Line-up #26 - Celts

Finally finished this with a domination victory on turn 247.

So for originality went Liberty 3 + Piety 4 + Exploration 3 (2 before secularism) + Rationalism 2 + Autocracy 6. Actually happy that it gave me similar Electronic timing as I usually get (around T200). But it's also too luck based because you need Jesuit Education and a good religion for happiness. I was quite lucky to grab Jesuit Education, Religious Centers and Pagodas.

Video to follow at some point.

Spoiler :

Rome was a pain to get through.

t126
Spoiler :
Wow, Darius is really running away. I tried to set up to steal a worker NW of Pasargadae, but he always had 2-3 Warriors around. In retrospect I should have kept a Scout there too to block his Settler - but such is the case when you don't read spoilers or replay. BO Scout Scout Monument and maybe Shrine as I wanted to get a religion early as they were flying fast. I did get first pantheon (wine and incense)... I got a Settler out what I thought was quickly, but Darius plopped Susa down crazy fast, screwing up my city blocking attempt W of the lake. Then he got his 4th city out before I got my 3rd, he was really pissing me off. He was fielding Swords before I had Archers, and Pikes t66. He now has 3/5 cities that are larger than my cap. My 4th city is crap, but I got furs, and a second food cargo port.

Policies went fast with the wine, so finished Trad t74. Chopped NC and NEpic, had considered going for Oracle first but Darius snagged that too, would have wasted the lumber. He has half the wonders already, including all 3 Theocracy ones. The bastage even took Tithe, first time I've seen it go. I took Church Property and Swords/Plows, not even sure if it's going to be worth Reforming. I bought a Missionary, converted Dublin, then wasted it on Florence - at pop 9 it didn't take it, so now my 3rd and 4th city won't be Taoist, and will likely lose the 2nd.

Just hit Renn, have one in Patronage, 5 turns to Rat. Obvious SV in the works. If I was to replay I might either chop a bunch of Settlers or do like kb and chop ToA, that was a nice move.

Hi Acken,

Your video no. 5 ends with turn 142 but no. 6 starts with turn 166

Probably one missing in between

turn 126

started 4 city tradition, was able to get last religion (though not a good one), i settled my cities pretty close to each other trying to block darius
went to war with him right after and took 3 of his cities, right now he only got his capital left

though i think im late in science, just finished my university in capital and starting them in core cities
this war pumped all my prod for a good while, now that i saw acken videos i think it might have been wiser to wait for frigates to concquer him
anyway ill continue to see how it goes, the biggest issue is rome who became a real monster. he's took ethiopia out of the game, he got an insane amount of cities extremly early and he is first in all stats (yes even in science)

I got a diplomatic victory on turn 283.

Spoiler :

I went for liberty, settled 4 cities before the NC and two after. I managed to ally Kiev and Florence through early barb camps which meant lots of early culture. I placed two policies in patronage and got the forbidden palace with the GE from liberty. By know I was thinking...mm why not go for a diplomatic victory. Sort of a novelty, since I haven't tried to go for a diplomatic victory since the number of votes needed to win increased. I also got 4 policies in rationalism (I did not finish the tree). I was first to freedom and I managed to get all the way down to treaty organisation but only 10 turns before the end, not very useful. I could have gotten there earlier but I mixed freedom with some more patronage (consolutes and schoralism). Arsenal of democracy was useful though. From the “war side” everything was peaceful. Hiawatha attacked me once, and that was it. Tech was “free flowing” this game, and I was tech leader just after the rennaisance. In the final screen I have 1341 beakers but I am not actually running any great scientist (275 beakers from scholarism). I overshot globalism big time, managed to get there around turn ~250, ever beaker after that was basically not needed. Anyway, once you get 6 cities in place and up and running then this map is not that difficult.

I haven't touched civ5 for 7 months or so. I expect plenty of rust. Hoping for an easier game to get back into the swing of things ...

to t100
Spoiler :

Well what the heck are these bison fellows doing on my map?! I better go read the patch notes ... ;)

So as far as I can tell the only major changes in the patch are two new resources and a nerf to Trad/Lib hybrid :(

I went Liberty and expanded to 5 cities. We have the space. Note that all 5 religions have already been claimed by t49. No pious Celts here.

By t100 I think things are going fine, but there are evident signs of rust.

Errors

- Stayed at war too long (after sniping an Iroquois settler) -> No gold from early horses.

- Forgot about Darius' extra move during GA. Nearly let a settler sneak by my lines.

- Growth is a little slow due to missing an extra city on the Left coast.

- Very conservative play on my part. I built too many warriors and unnecessary walls. I do expect Darius to DoW at some point, however.

- Missed my chance at a religion ... maybe Festivals instead of God-King as a pantheon would have been better.

T265 SV

Spoiler :

4 city Tradition, Rationalism + Freedom. All space parts were bought. Not a single war except 2 worker steals from the Iroquois. Easily won WF and IG. Could have played CV since leader India had only 35K at the end. India and America were my friends but the rest were divided in 3 or so fronts with wars taking place.
In the end I had too many GSs, 2 were faith bought.

I was casually glancing through this thread and noticed the sizes of your cities. How did you accomplish this? Obviously you farmed everything, but still I never manage to get my cap more than maybe 35 by T250. How do you keep happiness in check? Do you delay working your guild slots? What pantheon/ religious beliefs did you use?

Damn, another relative relic returns - welcome; I feel almost nostalgic. Expecting being rusty wasn't the scary part - realizing how bad the situation is was and I was away only half of that time. Sadly the AI hasn't been in school learning new things meanwhile either.

Well done! You have 5 DCL finishes now, which puts you on the Top Finisher's list :)

Thanks for continuing to play the maps :)

Turn 238 Space Vic

Damn, another relative relic returns ...

Heh. I'll take being a relic. Is that better than finding a city of bricks and turning it into marbles?

Spoiler :

What happens when I don't plan how to win? Spaced again. Not too bad a result for a Liberty game.

I skipped the XB window since the terrain looked awkward - same for Arty. Frigates were declined as I was struggling for happiness at the time.

Schools were reached at t147. Still thinking an Air Force to conquer the world would happen - but - the happiness Wonders are inland in Roman territory. Beeline to Radio (t155) Plastics (t186), so I guess space then.

The Celtic Empire at t148

Starting Apollo. Going the Liberty -> Rat -> Order route this game. (+Trad Opener and Aristocracy)

Victory

Some thoughts on the map.

Spoiler :

- This is a nice map. It has plenty of space to work with without being overpowered (no salt, early mining luxes, natural wonders, etc). SV, Culture, Dom are all solid options here. Galley access to the other continent makes this game easier (If you are lucky enough to find it in a timely way).

- I could chop a handful of turns off my victory by playing less safely. But safe play is more relaxing after a break from Civ :) I even added a couple Ironclads mid game to make sure an attack from Augustus would be delayed sufficiently.

- Caesar was strong in most games. Too bad he on the other continent, eh? I lost the WF to him after investing 1150 hammers! 1150 is more than I usually put in -> I was sure that was enough, but Caesar hit ~1350.

- Thanks Acken, Consentient for keeping this series alive and kicking :goodjob:

Well done Olodune and welcome back :)

I've been asked this several times actually :) But my answer is always the same - tradition, freedom, food routes to the cap (in this case I also sent food to Dublin), WLTKD and/or ally maritime CS when possible. In this game I also had HG. Cardiff and Truro had many river and grassland tiles, so no wonder they are big.

As for happiness I nearly always ally mercantile CS first, and obviously build circuses/colosseums and trade luxes. And later on freedom has a nice policy to keep happiness in check.

No, I always work guild slots when available. And religion (if there are no other obvious choices) then almost always tithe and either mosques/pogodas/cathedrals or growth.

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it! I feel I do most of those things except I probably don't focus enough on WLTKD and maritime CS's. Hopefully that'll get me the extra 15 pop...

Just sharing a fun screen shot of a barb island that had some unlucky visitors; anyone else have this?
