The demo is a waste of time

After reading all the problems people were having with the game, I think the demo is well worth it because I just installed it and fortunately it runs like a dream!

That alone made the download worthwhile to me, but I do think they could have cut the whole intro and made the filesize smaller because once you've seen it once then you just keep on entering past it and it's such a waste.

It's only 100 turns, but it's enough for me now to pre-order it for Friday because I think it's superb!:)

I was a bit expecting the graphics to be a letdown after reading some posts here, but actually that was a good thing because I ended up liking them more than I thought I would! Really love the animal animations....have you seen those cute little foxes running around??

In the future this will be modded unrecognisable, but I think for a demo launch it's starting off amazing!

I think I'm even more happier with this right now because I bought Elemental at launch and that was a disaster, which had me worried this might go the same way, but this game is in a totally different ball park!

p.s. The fog of war looks good on my settings...they're like fluffy white cumulus clouds drifting around on a light breeze!

Not sure about the difficulty as I'm new to Civ, which is probably a good thing for me by the sounds of it.

I like the demo. No used to the civ game with 1 upt and such, but its quite interesting. 100 turn games lets me perfect my start :P. Standard speed is too fast, im used to marathon/epic in civ4. But the speed is there so you can get a taste of techs in that 100 turns.

It has full civilopedia, quite nice. All settings on high, works perfectly, not a single hint of lag. Game is in fullscreen and it works like window mode no borders :). Sometimes the other monitor goes black if u minimze the last program there, but a simple alt-tab and its back ok.

Very good appetizer, cant wait for the full game!

A demo isn't meant to be anything more than a cheap tease to leave you hungering for more. If it were even halfway fulfilling on its own why bother with the full game?

I see it as useful on a number of basic levels:

1) Can my system run it decently?
2) Did they break my Civ game with all of these new tweaks?
3) How is the new AI?
4) Even if functional, does it feel like just more of the same or are some of these new mechanics so cool in play that I need to run out and get the full game RIGHT NOW or, enh, more of the same and I'll wait until the price drops down in a few months to get it.

I've often found, while not so much with the Civilization series, there are games that "looks great on paper" (theoretically is just up my ally) but once I've played it a bit just don't hook me (Galactic Civilization 2). A demo reveals this to me quickly in a way that watching a million play throughs or reading a zillion reviews just can't convey.

Some demo!. After the intro I get nothing but a dark screen with a cursor and background music.
Everything is frozen. No minimization possible. I have to use Task Manager to get out. Anybody else experience this? (Windows 7; very high-powered computer with Directx 11)

...and the demo freezes a lot. It froze when I tried to gift a unit to a city-state, and it froze when I tried to look at the civlopedia.

They waited all this time and the demo cannot even run.

I just wanted to say that there was nothing wrong with the graphics. For some odd reason it didn't register my changes in the graphic settings and so it was still showing the lowest after I changed them again and it started to work and even the fog of war looks nice. This game seems to be just how I like it to be and I can't wait for friday so I get the full game. With full graphics works nicely. :goodjob:

Playing the demo now. Aside from being seemingly easy for my first game, though perhaps I just got lucky, everything looks pretty good.

I've built 2 cities, formed an alliance with a city state, made friends with others, met 4 other civs, researched about 7-8 techs, built 3-4 units including my latest awesome Companion Cavalry (you're gonna be hearing a lot about these guys soon btw).

I definitely have that one more turn feeling already. It's Civ, I dunno what you've done if you don't feel it.

Btw the graphics run at max dx10, 2xAA with only an ATI Radeon 4770 and quad core 6600 cpu. It's not 100% smooth but it's completely fine. I will probably need to drop settings for later game saves though.

Frankly you can buy a pc for about $250 that would run this game exceptionally well.

Try running the game in DX9 mode if it's having problems.

Demo's 90% of the time are made to have you wanting more.

No performance problems whatsoever, not a single freeze or crash.

But overall, I agree - it doesn't feel like a Civ game. Worse - it feels like a CivRev game. And "The People With Pointy Sticks" doesn't help either :(

This actually made me laugh, because it was so very sudden and whimsical... (and because I'm re-reading The Culture novels right now, where nigh-omnipotent continent-sized starcruiser/AIs/habitats have names as "What are the Civilian Applications?", "Ultimate Ship the Second" or "Very Little Gravitas Indeed"... :D ).

Cheers, LT.

Just go out and get the game. It's 100 turns what do you expect?

Not all of us have the misfortune to live in North America therfore we have to wait for our activation times, the demo is a stop gap.

The demo gets better on a 2nd play, hopefully the full game will provide a truer civ experience.

my main worry was the pace of the game on standard, 100 turns in and I had only just built an army that was worthwhile, by the time i got that far my tech was making my old units obsolete, and since I'd spent all my money on city states I couldnt just upgrade to the swordsmen I could now create, if 100 turns im at swordsmen, Im not going to have much time in all the ages to wage a decent war with one era before needing to upgrade. And the same could happen on marathon because of the units will take alot longer to produce, i'll only get slightly longer to build a big enough force and then to use my hopilite companion cav before they're useless for example.

I might have to learn how to mod, I want to slow down tech alot, but keep unit production and building production speeds relatively quick, so epic battles can happen in each era without fear of everyone just obsoleting everyhting, until we're in the boring modern age... (i like the classical and medieval stuff best)

It was the same with Civ 4 for me though so im not surprised, I would expand, build an army, then rush to riflemen, upgrade everything I could, then go stomp the world until they caught up, by which time my infantry would be ready... i wanted longer drawn out games but had to force myself to attack early or not research any military tech until the enemy had units of its type running around.

Demo was cool until about turn 80, then I decided to do whatever I felt like with no regard for consequences (usually chop forests, I'm a rebel ;) ). Then on turn 90, Kuala Lampur told me they'd love me even more if I built the Oracle. But the Oracle took 15 turns to build! Then I became a sad Panda :(

But Persian Golden Ages are fun. On turn 90 or so I spent a Great General for a golden age just so I could move faster in a stupid war against England I wasn't going to win before the demo ended.
