[RD] The DUP, Tories, and Problems with Proportional Representation

It's problematic because nobody voted for an alliance with the DUP. Coalitions always override the will of the voter to some extend and give undue influence to small parties. It's the lesser evil compared to the American winer takes all system, but it's still undemocratic.

But in a sense, aren't people getting what they voted for? As far as I know, the conservatives ran mostly on the Brexit platform, didn't they? So it would make sense that they would cooperate with a party that allows that to happen, does it not?

When you vote, you're making a choice to put your faith in the people you voted for. And, since unexpected things can happen, in a way you will always be operating on blind trust. There may come up issues that no-one was anticipating when people were casting votes. I mean if you didn't want DUP in a coalition then you shouldn't have voted for the kind of party that might form a coalition with DUP

^UK is a bit different re its right/far right parties in that theoretically the tories (a prototype of a right-wing party) don't want to be too openly associated with religious parties (although the line is more blurred when it comes to Dup's legacy with the military wing of the unionists, ie actually blood-stained).
Still, being in power due to an alliance with the Dup is farcical in itself, and shameful.
