The future of Civ 2?

Yes, there are additions (or rather, "expansions") to Civ2: Fantastic Worlds (FW), Multiplayer Gold Edition (MGE), and Test of Time (TOT).

Thank you, I have TOT but it does not seem to be as good as MGE. I shall have to check our Fantastic Worlds if I can find it.

Thanks much.

Ahem, I beg to differ. Test of Time is by far the best, most powerful and most customizable verrsion of Civilization II. The problem is it has its graphics against it. It looks dark and blurry. Give it a shot. If the graphics really bother you, there are patches available that can make it look like MGE again:

Since you have MGE, there's no need for you to find FW. Specialist also forgot about another add-on: "Conflicts in Civilization", but you don't have to get that either. These add-ons were designed for the original Civ2. They are already included in MGE... In fact, if you buy FW/CiC separately they wouldn't work since they're add-ons for the original, unless you also have the original Civ2 of course.

Who else has had the occasional diplomacy bug in Test of Time, where the AIs won't acknowledge you even if you build Marco Polo's Embassy? I prefer the earlier Civ2 graphics also, although the fantasy and sci-fi units in ToT are excellent.

Actually, the aforementioned dipomacy failure has started happening to me in old-fashioned normal Civ2 as well! Same computer, same installation as before - ands old games still work as normal. It's just that, on any new ones I begin, the AIs simply will not talk at all...

I tried deleting and reinstalling the game, and the problem remained. All I can think is that it's some kind of virus, introduced with ToT and gradually spread to other directories on my hard disk.

Surely I'm not the only user who EVER had this kind of problem?

I thought it was just me that they would not talk with. Eventually they do but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when and if they will speak with me.

I bought Civ3 but only played it when I changed to a better computer - and I played only 10 min before I switched back to Civ2. Civ3 is so different. I like Civ2 better but I hope there are patches to improve the game further.

I played Civ III for quite a while trying to master the changes that I was so used to in Civ II. But I felt that the graphics overloaded the play of the game...what I mean is that the picture is so pretty you don't get much of a kick of action like you do in Civ II. The picture of the land so so complex and more "distant"...not a matter of "zoom" but of ratio of active "pieces" on the board to the board itself.

I think about trying to play Civ III again but I have enjoyed Civ II so much, especially since getting more information and trying so many other options (GOTM, OCC, ELG, etc.) from these forums that I am very spoiled.

I have also played civ3, but I don't like the extra hassle of getting my creations to work--civ2 does that for you, and for that, I am thankful.
