The future of Civ 2?

I'm a committed conserver. There will be people for whom Windows 98 will continue to be adequate and their computers will continue to be Civ2 friendly.

And there is the clone, Freeciv, for both Windows and other OSs like Linux.

I built a computer to play civ II because the new ones were too fast. I spend more time on the slower one playing Civ II than I do on the nice new pretty one.

Same thing here. Works of art live forever! So will CIV II. (or at least until our generation dies;) )

It works fine on XP but things move so fast that I wanted it on a slower computer (I don't think or see fast enough). The one I build will also play all the old kids games for my Grandchildren that they still enjoy that will not run on XP.

I'll just keep an old computer around if Civ 2 can't be played on modern machines anymore. But taking in regard the speed with which I adopt to modern computer standards, I won't be having much problems any time soon

When you get as old as I am the speed can become a really big problem. These old reflexes just don't run at over 1.0. :hmm:

I absolutely agree with those, who say well be able to run old favourites forever.

Thanx to the *GIANT* amount of software (read: games) for the PC there will *always* be someone who'll at least develope *EMULATORS* to run old games.

EVEN IF THE WINTEL ALLIANCE DIES/GOES AWAY FOREVER.

Beacause even if no hacker makes an emulator in the *DISTANT* future then some software company will se there is a market and make one.

Actually I have grown tired of keeping my *OLD* machines taking up place in my bedroom merely to run some difficult to run DOS games, and gotten rid of it since I have found an excellent DOS emulator that runs games that I havent seen run for at least 10 years. :)

DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY... PLAYING CIV-2 or CIV-1 or ANY-CIV :)

UM mayby we should put our energy into civ4 instead of mouring a dead bird.

No need to do either.
Civ2 is no dead bird. It runs just fine under Direct X which means it will run just fine for years to come. :)

I have a question. You know how patches can be written to jazz up graphics, can patches be written to extend other aspects of the game, for example to improve the AI?

Go to the Civ2 downloads colledction via quick links. There are plenty of patches and updates there, and a lifetime's worth of graphical mods!

No, not how it looks at the moment.

There are some players who are trying to petition Atari (?) for the Civ2 source code though, and if they decide to release it, someone will be able to reprogram the AI.:) Try finding the thread and join in on it, if you're interested.

the day i can't play civ2 will be the day i buy civ4.
If it not better than Civ III I will continue to play Civ II

I play civ2 on a DELL laptop, loaded with everything, and civ2 actually works better on this computer than on one of my older computers. As for civ2 ultimately dying? It better not, otherwise I'll be quite [expletive deleted]! I sometimes play civ3, but doing my Plutonian Empire stuff on that game was very frustrating, because when I forget something, the game often freezes. But I prefer civ2, because it is much more flexible. I doubt civ4 will be any better than civ3.

Are ther additions to CIV II like there are to CIV III? For instance for CIV III there is Play the World and I believe another called Conquest.

Yes, there are additions (or rather, "expansions") to Civ2: Fantastic Worlds (FW), Multiplayer Gold Edition (MGE), and Test of Time (TOT).
