The future of the GOTM (conquests support)

so, everyone without Conquest expansion is excluded from playing GOTM ?

@ Pond: To reinforce what Space said:

We are very conscious that a lot of people don't have Civ3 conquests, and conquests isn't even available for mac players! We don't want to lose these people just because a new version of Civ has been released.

But the basic fact is that many, many people have now moved-on from Civ & PTW to play conquests. We want to give them a competition to play as well, therefore we decided that the best option would be to run two competitions. :)

COTM really is a terrible acronym. If someone can think of a better term for C3C gotms, then please suggest it here! :D

I came here to debate how ridiculous it would be to run dual pre-/Conquest & balance the two out into one tourny, and I'm very pleased to see that's not what you are doing.

To bad you guys left us poor shlubs with 1.15 out, but other then that good going.

Damn, I just started playing this again, and I have exactly 2 weeks off. I played a while ago (gotms 10-25 or so) and I've been really busy since. I was really looking forward to a gotm to play over my holidays.

Sorry if this has been answered in other threads, but why are the two games not released simultaneously?

If this is to stagger the submissions etc, would it not have been sensible to release the conquest game half way through the month and keep the PTW gotm in its regular timeslot?

Or at least give us some notice, which may have helped the frustration and disappointment that I feel now.

On a related point, is anyone up for an "honesty" gotm?

If someone is up for it, they could make a map, and we can all have a go for two weeks and then post our dates/scores.

Mac, 1.29

While I understand the need to move on to conquests, I believe that the inclusion of conquests will ultimately split the GOTM community again. If I've read the posts correctly, the COTM and the GOTM will be two separate games (different maps and even possibly different civs) with a scoring system designed to integrate the two.

I fear as more players move to the COTM, the GOTM will become much like the medal play series. Fewer players will actually play the GOTM, there will be less participation in the threads and the GOTM will quickly become the "if I have the time" game for players with conquests.

So, while I applaud the staff for not excluding Mac players and continuing to support us :goodjob:, it feels as though we have indeed been cast out of the "real GOTM", the new COTM.

@demiurge:

1. Can you think of any alternative approach?

2. The GOTM will only become a backwater if the players let it. There are lots of players, believe it or not, for whom a single game per month is not enough. They will play both. There are lots of players who have honed their skills on PtW/1.29 who will want to continue to play with that rule set. There ae also lots of players like you and me who have no alternative.

3. The participation in GOTM in May was over 160 players. That was up 33% from 120 the previous month, and no one knew we were planning to start Conquests games. Sure, the GOTM player count will dip, but I'm optimistic that a very substantial group will continue to play it and provide us with a serious competition.

Arg, and I was just starting to unlearn my C3C habits to play PTW GOTMs...

But I'm happy to see C3C supported, anyway!

So, the PTW GOTM and the C3C GOTM will be totally different? Those of us with the time and ambition will be able to play both games? Count me in! :)

@ Alan H

#1 No I can't. I think the move to conquests was inevitable. I'm sure the staff discussed ways to maintain both game versions and came up with the best possible solution. I'm not being critical of the decision, just expressing my disappointment.

#3: As a lurker who is just starting to take more of an active participation I hope your right. Maybe I'm being too pesimistic when gazing into my crystal ball. I like the vision from yours better.

I think its great news, playing two competitions (or is it three, SGOTM) does seem to be the only way to introduce Conquests into GOTM.

Maybe we should simply call the Conquests version CGOTM, and start to refer to Vanilla as VGOTM.

I have not bought Conquests yet, but have touched the package in my local store, now I'll certainly go out and buy it. Do you guys get commision, as a lot of others may do this.

I will probably play both competitions, but I wonder how scoring will work for those that play both and those that don't.

You said by downloading all that junk and wrecking my Civ3 installation, I would able to play all future GOTMs. But I can't.

You damned liars!! :gripe:

Vanilla has no multiplayer support. That's why GOTM appeals. Conquests has multiplayer support, so GOTM is not required..

Are you pronouncing PtW dead then?

I think that's a bit harsh.

(1) No one could expect us to ignore Conquests for ever.

(2) Your Civ installation certainly shouldn't have been ruined by installing the GOTM mods. The most you have to do is swap three files to revert it. I don't even do that. I keep two versions on my drive.

(3) If your current installation allowed you to play gotm31 then I believe it will also play 32. But never say 'never'. I don't think you'll find any post where a member of staff has promised that there would never be any more mods to play a GOTM in vanilla.

(4) Most GOTM players run PtW. They find GOTM offers a different challenge from multiplayer. I'm sure that will be the case for Conquests as well.

Was the initial reaction. Nobody likes being deceived :(

Isn't there a cross-compatible solution?

Well it is. I cannot make new maps anymore (all the resources are messed up), I cannot play random games anymore (all the resources are messed up), and between Dreamweaver, Office, Photoshop, Visual Studio .NET, PERL, etc., etc., etc., I only have space for 1x Civ3 installation.

(3) If your current installation allowed you to play gotm31 then I believe it will also play 32. But never say 'never'. I don't think you'll find any post where a member of staff has promised that there would never be any more mods to play a GOTM in vanilla.

It does play GOTM31. I don't have the Civ used in GOTM32 so don't see how it would work.

You certainly implied it would power future GOTM, when you advocated installing all those patches...

@Stormbind: COTM01 is *not* GOTM32. In two weeks time GOTM32 *will* be released. In order to accomodate all those who can't or won't play using Conquests, we have doubled our workload. We have been looking for ways to keep one single game each month, but the changes they made between the games (like adding a civ trait and changing the others etc. ) are just too profound.

edit: On the UP-side there's the fact that some people like to play unmodded games, on could argue we now have the best of both worlds. :)

Sorry, but I don't consider it logical for GOTM to be moved to a new schedule. Normally, new products get new schedules and a new place on the shelf, as this reduces interference and confusion.

Don't be confused Alan, no I was just simplifying things, by counting PTW as vanilla. Maybe we should just keep the regular GOTM acronym as GOTM then so as not to confuse, everyone will know it means vanilla and PTW.

But we could use CGOTM, and SGOTM for the Conquests and Succession.

An evening of trying to get a game going on gamespy will show you the folly of this statement. However, if you happen to like playing chaps who bail after 15 mins - then MP is for you.
I can understand your and others irritation at not being able to play because they don't have C3C. I remember when I got the GOTM bug, desperate for the first of the month to roll round so I could have another crack at it.
I suggest you raise it with your M.P., he won't know what you are talking about, but he will look suitably appalled if he wants your vote. :)
