I can only speak for myself,
but does anyone else feel any inclination to play Civ II because Civ III is not far away.

Don't get me wrong. I still play once every now and then, but I'm not as excited as I once was.

All I can think about now, when I hear any mention of civ is: Civ III

One thing is for sure. I will buy it the first opportunity that I get, and I am also looking forward to one particular thing:

The release of Civ III will wipe the scoreboards clean. No longer do we need to compete with people that have hacked the game to pieces to find the latest techological advancement and 'edge' to win.
No longer do we NEED to hack the game to threads to keep up with these advantages.

These things are great, but they also reduce the 'fun' and excitement somewhat.

For the first time in many years (and it's forever in computer years) we will be faced with a fresh challenge. FRESH armour FRESH scrores and most importantly:

FRESH opportunity and knowledge level!

This is an opportunity for all those that just couldn't quite pull it off in MP to start over. The great thing is, that you will have ample time on the single player level to get your act together.

Will you have what it takes, when it comes to the battle field of MP oce again?

Will those that have been standing tall over less fortunate opponents be able to hold their grasp, having to deal with a new arena?

Why on earth do you think that all the clever strategies people have developed over the past 2 Civ games will become completely redundant with the third? The differences in the new game will soon become part of new strategies based on the ones for Civs 1 and 2, but for the most part they will be instantly adaptable because the game is called Civ III, and won't be totally different from the winning formula they have already. If you're really good or bad at Civ at the moment, chances are you'll be just as good or bad at Civ III.

Truthfully, I don't think that civ 3 will be any more fun than civ 2. Might have better graphics and some neat bells and whistles, but it's going to be the same basic game, like duke said.

I'm not bored with civ 2 at all and I'll continue playing it until civ 3 comes out....and if I hear reviews that civ3 isn't that great, hell I'll still play it. Just because something is old doesnt mean it is bad. A classic never gets old.

I think that the civ3 ladder system will not show big differences to the civ2 ladder. It doesnt matter what game you play in MP, some will always be better then others. I am pretty sure if you are good in civ2 MP, you will also be good in redalert or Doom.

MP play has basically to do with the adapting to and exploiting of human mistakes. detailed skill of the game doesnt really matter once you have a good basis.

I disagree Woke. When I win at multiplayer it isn't by adapting to others mistakes it is by better play, having stronger units and more of them, not by the others being weak, but my strategies making me omnipotent.

I think that in civ3 my strategies will work even better since the ICS strategy is going away, which I never really pursue because to me it is boring and I can get the same thing with my strategies and be a lot stronger, it just depends on the map. I hope to be able to rule Civ III. My Borders will seem to be alive as they move across the screen!

I totally disagree with Woke - to say that being good in one MP game means you would be good in all of them is like saying a good poker player would make a good Civ player, or a good pool player would make a good chess player. Each game requires a different way of thinking and different skills (eg Doom requires a good aim, Red Alert is tactical and Civ requires strategic thought)

I do think Civ 3 will be more fun than Civ2, just like Civ2 is more fuin than Civ1 - but I still play Civ1 from time to time. I will probably play nothing but Civ3 for ages after it comes out, and then get curious about how my Civ2 playing has been affected by Civ3. Or I'll just get nostalgic for caravans or simplistic diplomacy,a nd go back to Civ2. Or I might still want to see if I can still get the industrial revolution by 1AD, in Civ1. The differences are what makes the games interesting, and why I buy each one that comes out.

No the Zulus are Greener the Grass is kinda yellow!
but hopefully they wont be the same so you will have to find new tactics! but the stratagy still sounds the same!

I'm not worried. It took me 2 weeks to pick civ2 apart, it will take me a month max to pick civ3 apart.

I'll probably keep playing Civ II after III comes out until I can upgrade my computer

I'll get III as soon as I can play it, but in the meantime Civ II is still keeping me interested and is still enjoyable, and will be for a long while, I suspect.

Sorry, but I think Civ II is classic and will probably never quite let go...

I've done a lot of customization, but each new game with Civ II is as fun as the first one. Yes, I'm looking forward to Civ III - I've spent months convincing the wife that Western Civilization will collapse and there'll be a plague of locusts o'er the land if I don't buy it the day it comes out - but I still thoroughly enjoy a good Civ II game.

About the only way Civ III has affected me is that I was heavily considering trying my hand at creating a scenario, but may wait til Civ III comes out to try it then...

Long as I get new tech and units, I'll be a happy camper.

Civ 2 is the the greatest computer game of all time, bar none... and that will likely not change anytime soon after Civ 3 comes out.

However, I do eventually hope I can say Civ 2 has been supplanted by Civ III one day...

BTW, The greatest 3-D game of all time is of course, Half-Life (and it's mods). And the greatest old-time arcade game is Asteroids. I'd mention the best Pinball games, but I doubt most people in this forum are old enough to have grown up in the era when Pinball was king.
