If I may slightly add to that, the Soviet Union was the major arms producer and enabled many terrorist and insurgency groups within many democratic or developing countries. Now, if these insurgency groups had purchased or been given Soviet-built equipment, wouldn't it make sense for the United States to sell or give some of our equipment to do what's best in our strategic interests?

Plus, to add on your that it's in the country's interest - it is.

When you look at overall economic and political health, you'll see that countries siding with the United States are typically the highest on the list, where puppets of the Soviet bloc were some of the lowest. This is true in different places - Germany, Korea - just to name two.

As much as Western support for Saddam during the 1980s bordered on the criminal, and as much as much ambassador Glaspie inexplicably blundered before the first Gulf War, the fact remains that Saddam did all the things outlined above by his own choice. Anyone who does all these things by choice is pure evil in my book.

What about torturing, hanging, beating, killing, raping and disfigurment all because of the color of your skin? Pure Evil! Right? Bah. Maybe not..

It's not propeganda or something, it only point out that
Saddam Hussayn isn't pure evil or the devil undercover.
He did not just attack his citizens just for sadistic fun or something, he killed who opposed him...

Truth is only truth when all parties exept it as the Truth.
Before that, it's just a interpretation...

I will point you to a link which will tell you about the routine torture which Saddam's son administers to Iraqi Olympic athletes.
