So here I am trying a Conquest Victory on Monarch, Not the first time I’ve played Monarch though, but the only other time I played the Indians and wimped out and went for a Diplomatic Victory, so not a huge challenge. To achieve my goal, I chose the Incans, whom I’d never played as before(Except once on Chieftain on a tiny map and can’t remember well.) The Settings are:

World Size: Large
World Type: Pangaea
Ocean Coverage; 70%
Climate: Normal
Temperature: Temperate
Age: 4 Billion
Barbarians: Sedentary

AI is all random except I put the Iroquois in because I don’t want to be purple, seeing as I have been purple last two games I’ve played. Lol.

4000BC: The game begins… I see a good looking start in a good position on the map, I’ll probably come across deserts but no matter as I’m Agricultural. I found Cuzco, and to my luck find a couple of Wines just outside the border!

Start.jpg

3400 BC – Yay! My Scout discovers Incense a little North-East to my Capital, so far I’m liking this start a lot =]

2850BC – I discover the Portuguese who trade me Ceremonial Burial for Warrior Code and 35 gold.
Spoiler :

006.jpg

2630 – The town of Tiwanaku is founded just South-West of the capital, which I can hopefully turn into another decent Settler Factory.

Spoiler :
008.jpg

2430 – I discover Germany, and for once in the early game I have more techs than another Civ! (I’m usually crappy at the tech part of the game, sometimes ending up half an age or so behind!)

Spoiler :
009.jpg

I also meet Persia who are up Alphabet and are “insulted” by the idea of trading their Alphabet for my Ceremonial Burial ;(

2350 – I found Machu Picchu on a hill south of the capital, and with a few BG’s surrounding, I hope to turn it into a settler factory as well.

1870 – I found Ollantaytambo by the Persian Capital to prevent them from getting Dyes, Probably not the Smartest thing to do seeing as its surrounded by Jungle and probably could have made a fourth city somewhere more Productive, but they wouldn’t trade me Alphabet, so I cut off my nose to spite my face, but stopped them from having any dyes ;) (I think I got that saying right)

I also discover Iron working in the Same turn to discover Iron NW of Tiwanaku. Settler en Route.

Hehe, I’ll update soon, I hope you like it and don’t forget this is my first proper go at Monarch so any tips appreciated!

Note: I also just copied and pasted the city names straight from the editor, as I’m not even going to attempt to spell them, I mean, Ollantaytambo?

Thanks for reading! =]

Thanks Guys!

Update:

1790BC - I meet the Lovely Aztecs to my North-West and trade Iron-Working to them for Alphabet and 2Gold

I also meet a Roman warrior passing by the German’s territory, the Roman’s are up a couple of Tech’s (Mysticism and the Wheel) although they only have 2 cities.

1650BC - I found Cory-whatever next to my nearest Iron resource ready to link up and take over the Persians with a swordsman rush, The Persians had a jungly start and haven’t expanded quite as fast as the other Civ’s I’ve met(Except Rome)

I also spot Gems outside Cory’s border which brings up the total luxuries in my vicinity up to four ;D

1425BC – I found the town Huamanga North-East of the Capital, It’s in a decent spot with a few bonus Grasslands and a “Game” it also has a couple of hills around it which will soon be in its radius.

I also found out Rome is south of me, just next to the Germans. My warrior also spots a yellow border south of Rome. Most likely Egypt, but I could be wrong.

1325BC – Nope it’s the Mongols; he has 3 techs on me yet has only 3 cities -_-

1175BC – I discover Mathematics and immediately trade it plus 17Gold to the Mongols for Writing, The Wheel and Mysticism. Also Trading Writing to the Roman’s for Horseriding bringing me up to par with everyone else.

The town of Vilcas is founded north of Huamanga on top of the Incense

1100BC – I found Vilcabamba east of the Capital

1000BC – I meet Hammurabi, who seems to be doing moderately well, surprisingly they have no techs on me and I have Mathematics on them.

975 – Vitcos founded South-East of Capital not far from the German border.

925BC – I found Andahualays far south of the capital just beating out the Aztecs to the 2 Diamonds

900BC - I found Ica just North West of Cuzco, As well as Arequipa south of Cuzco.

875BC - Nasca is founded North of Cuzco.

850BC – “Livy” Completed the “Largest Nations of the World.” Turns out I’m coming second, while the Iroquois are in first. Maybe I shouldn’t have put them in the game >_>. The Mayans are coming third, and are ALWAYS a superpower in my games; I don’t expect this one to be very different.

017.jpg

I also trade Mathematics to the Romans for map-making.

710BC - Atico is founded.

670BC – Juli founded

630BC – I find out the Mayans have Pyramids. Oh well at least it wasn’t the Iroquois.
012.jpg

610BC - Chuito is founded next to Andahualays next to the Iron. Also the Iroquois complete the Great Wall.

570BC Grr! the Aztecs declare war on us! Turns out Arequipa were undefended, for some reason I didn’t notice @_@. Change of plan, Instead of taking out the Persians first I think I will take out most of the Aztecs. I switch Tiwanaku and Machu Picchu to Swordsman ready to take it back, and weaken the Aztecs back a bit, as they are currently in 3rd place of all the known civilizations. Here’s the plan:
Spoiler :
013.jpg

550BC - I meet an Ottoman warrior; Osman doesn’t look to be much of a threat, only has six cities.

470BC - The couple of swordsman I sent down retake Arequipa.
014.jpg

390BC - The Aztecs finish the Temple of Artemis in Tenochtitlan, hopefully I can capture it before I get to education.

270BC - I Trade Currency to the Babylonians for Construction and 140 Gold, bringing me into the Middle Ages!

This is the end of the update as I have much study to do. Ohwell. More soon, Thanks for reading and remember to criticize and give advice too!

Here’s my empire so far:

Cahuenga, can I give you a bit of advice for a next game? Agricultural civs get an extra food in the box in their towns, but in Despotism you'll only get this extra food when the town is founded next to sweet water.
Tiwanaku is missing out, and perhaps Machu Picchu and other towns as well (I can't really judge that well from the screen shots), while there would have been plenty sweet water spots available for those towns.
Another advantage of sweet water placing is that you don't need an aqueduct to let the town grow beyond size 6 (this goes for any civ, Agricultural or not).

@Optional, Oh so when I get out of Despotism will I get the food bonus anyway?

@Aabraxan, I guess, but not that important anymore seeing the expansion stage is over, i've only really got a little section to the North-East to go.

Yes, 3 food in the town centre instead of 2.
A consolation is also that aqueducts (that you will need) are at half price for Agricultural civs.

That's cool. I'm pretty OCD at City Placement, I can't stand having them 2 or less tiles apart. I guess every CIV player has their own quirks

LOL, Even if it means sacraficing a river(Tiwanaku). I'll happily place them 4 tiles apart though.

New Update

I have a feeling that the Mayans and Iroquois will be the big opponents in the game; Chichen Itza is on the Top 5 Cities list showing me that the Mayans are still in the Ancient Ages even though they’re the 3rd largest civ(After Me and the Iroquois) I think they might be on a separate island, as the main continent doesn’t look like it goes very far west.

210BC – Damn, The Aztecs capture Chuito from me. No matter, they’re just stalling from their inevitable demise ;)

190BC – A rogue Aztec spearmen disconnects my Wines putting both Tiwanaku and Machu Picchu in disorder. -_-

150BC – Awesome! I get my first Military Great Leader while capturing Tlacopan, Which means the first Swordsman army
025.jpg

150AD – Urgh Andahuaylas was captured. I’m not used to their troop bonus thing on Monarch. So many Horseman/Jag Warriors/Archers. Oh well At least I recapture Chuito.

170AD – Hah! I produce another Great Leader from some dumb Aztec Horsemen attacking my Elite Swordsman! I promptly load 3 Veteran swordsmen inside

190 – The Iroquois declare war on the Portuguese…The Iroquois aren’t even on my little F4 Screen anyway, so I don’t know what’s going on there.. I hope the Portuguese can hold them off for a while.

210AD – I trade my newly discovered Feudalism and 10gpt and horses to Persia for Monotheism and The Republic, I then Trade Monotheism and Feudalism to the Portuguese for Monarchy and Literature, I know it was a bit of a rip-off but they can build Pikemen now so hopefully they won’t get slaughtered.

250 AD – Ha! I only just realised I get Medieval Infantry now (Cuzco just produced one) I also finally take Andahuaylas back. Now that both my Swordsman armies are just outside Calixtlahuaca this war should go a bit faster.

260AD – My Swordsman storm Calixtlahuaca taking it pretty easily.
019.jpg

On to Tenochtitlan! I decide to get an embassy with Persia, and then I’m going to get a Rite of passage then take a few troops the back way to attack Texcoco, saving time.

270AD – I am notified the Aztecs are building Sun Tzu’s I REALLY hope they get it. Doubt they will though.

290AD – I forgot about the Ottomans, turns out there free tech was Engineering. I trade The Republic and Feudalism for it.

I discover the French. I don’t know where they are but they’re on my F4 Screen

300AD – The Iroquois finish the Hanging Gardens… Fantastic…

320AD – I finally discover the mighty Iroquois. They have 22 cities, 3 more than me. We are both equal in technology too. I suppose it could be worse.

340AD – Texcoco falls to me, Thanks to the troops I sent through Persia.
020.jpg

370 – Damn it! The Aztecs sign a military alliance against me with the Portuguese. Great. Now I’m not sure whether to attack Portugal or make peace and go after Germany who has better land.

On the Bright side I take Tenochtitlan from the Aztecs netting me the Temple of Artemis! Yay free temples!
021.jpg

The Aztecs won’t be getting anywhere now with only 4 cities with one being separated so I make peace with them to concentrate more on Portugal, Getting me all their gold and 14 gpt.

I plan to just take Lagos, Lisbon and Oporto which would give me their Silks and a couple of Great wonders in Lisbon(GLighthouse and Colossus) Then after that depending on the circumstances, take Braga, Leira and that Unknown city in-between them.

400AD – Portugal signs an alliance with Germany against me. Now forcing me to have to defend an attack on two fronts.

410AD I’m pretty sure the German’s don’t have Iron either as they just sent an Archer, Horseman and a Warrior at me.

I sign an alliance against the Portuguese with the Babylonians hoping that will stop the Babylonians from being dragged into a war with me.

420AD Uh-Oh I think I might have just started a world war:
022.jpg

430: The French declare war. For some reason they think there warrior could take Tenochtitlan. Oh well they’re hardly a threat as they’d have to go through about 5 civs to get to me.

I trade 24gpt and 96 gold to the Iroquois for Chivalry; I then trade it and 20gpt to the Romans for Invention.

440AD Whoops. Spoke to soon. About nine French Ancient Cavalry appear out of the fog next to Tenochtitlan. There’s no way I can defend from that. Not quite sure what to do. I was thinking of gifting it to the Persians or the Mongols to hold until I finish them. Haven’t quite decided yet.

Here’s a screen of my current empire including the freshly captured Lagos:
Spoiler :

Also this is the end of this update so Thanks for Reading and don’t forget any criticisms you may have, good or bad, I want them ;)

Bye!

Nice progress, not bad game, I'm following.

My tips would be:

Try to get worker factory running (to improve core).

Make few horses (4 or so) and add them into core defense, horses can move 2 tiles (or 6 tiles if roaded. Then you can disband core defense or send them to the front.

You are still in despotism, get out of it ASAP. it is WORTH it.

You are mining hills I'd suggest:
Do not work jungle, marsh, hill, mountain tiles before you are done with irrigating mining grassland/plain &forests. You may have to re-irrigate few tiles to get more hills (production) for citizens to work on.

when working tiles: Primary: get cities connected, so You could move forces. Secondary Improve core first.

Let city grow a bit, then look at city and see what tiles could be improved (and how) to get more production/food/commerce.

My few cents, just suggestions.

Sorry for bad English.

@Northern Wolf:Thanks :goodjob:

Yeah Ollantaytambo is a my worker factory, I've also now switched to Monarchy.

Also here's my new Update:

440AD – I gift Tenochtitlan to the Persians to avoid the inevitable capture by the French.

450AD – The Aztecs sign an alliance with Persia against the Portuguese.

Another group of French Ancient Cavalry approach Andahuaylas, I really hope this is the last of them; they’re starting to become annoying. At least I got the temple bonus off ToA before I gifted it to the Persians.

460AD Portugal recaptures Lagos after I leave it undefended to attack an Archer that could have taken it anyway. No matter, I recapture it instantly, as well as capturing Lisbon with my Medieval Infantry’s getting me the Great Lighthouse and the Colossus. Their capital moves to their easternmost city, Leira.
027.jpg

470AD – The Aztecs drag another civ(Ottomans) into the war against Portugal
028.jpg

Theres also a good chance Andahuaylas will be captured by the French, but I hold my breath and click end turn…

480AD – They capture it. Oh well it shouldn’t be too hard to get back I just have to divert troops from Portugal and Germany.

490AD – I capture Oporto giving me silks bringing my luxury count up to 4. It would be 5 but the Gems are in Andahuaylas -_-
029.jpg

On the German front I capture Cologne, while the Germans relentlessly attack Vitcos with no success.

Also for some reason the Iroquois are Gracious to me 0_o

I know I really need to get out of Despotism but I’m running low on troops and really need my core to keep pumping them out.

500AD – Yuss! Berlin builds the Great Library

520AD – On the Portuguese front I capture Sagres, while on the German front as I don’t have anything really over there, I’m just picking off attackers.

530AD – The Babylonians capture Leira, forcing their capital back to the other end of their empire at Guimaraes

540AD – The Iroquois capture Emeritia while I autoraze Braga. The Portuguese are pretty much gone now, with only 2 cities left. Now with the war basically over I decide to revolt at long last. The Incans are thrown into Anarchy, the government should be back under control in SIX turns. Great. -_-

550AD – The Babylonians complete Sun Tzu’s in Uruk. This causes the Iroquois to finish Knights Templar in Grand River. That’s not good. There is a 2-tile chokepoint between me and the Iroquois luckily. I’ll send a bunch of Pikemen over to block them off after the Anarchy.

Also the Babylonians take Evora leaving the Portuguese with just one city, and with the stacks of Iroquois soldiers hanging around, I doubt it will last long.

In an effort to Map out the Iroquois I send one of my Portuguese slaves down through the Inca/Iroquois chokepoint.

580 AD – The Germans sign the Persians against me in a military alliance, I really wanted to have a break from war soon but I guess that won’t happen.
030.jpg

I found Huanuco Pampa on the ruins of Braga

590AD – I FINALLY recapture Andahuaylas and hurriedly make peace with the French in fear of them dragging someone else into a war against me.

600AD – Not wanting to spread myself in too many places with my lack of troops after the Portuguese war, I make peace with the Germans, planning to attack them later on.

620AD Rome completes Leonardo’s workshop while the Iroquois take out Portugal’s last city, wiping them out.

700AD – The Babylonians complete the Sistine Chapel

720AD - I trade 30gpt and 510 gold to the Ottomans for Gunpowder.

830AD – FINALLY getting a roll on Persia by capturing Gordium(a “core” city) after much annoyance from them capturing Ollantaytambo. I also trade 55gpt, Gems and 750 gold to the Babylonians for Chemistry, which I than trade to the Ottomans for Printing Press and Education.
031.jpg

860AD The Iroquois demand my territory map and 5 gold. Not wanting a war with them, I give in. I’ll get my own back. ;)

I also capture Pasargadae off the Persians.

890AD – Bactra falls to me, I plan to just Take Persepolis and Sidon, make peace so I can concentrate more on defence. If the Babylonians or the Iroquois decided to attack…It would not be pretty.

900AD I capture Sidon (It’s just next to Machu Picchu, Near the Germans) I also get Territory maps off the Ottomans and Iroquois.

910AD – Persepolis falls to me, I make peace with the Persians getting me a hefty 11 gold. (all they had)
32.jpg

The race to Communism is now on. I also pay the Germans 11gpt for the World Map. (I love finally getting the world map)

This is the end of this update, so I’ll leave you with a tour of the world:

Thanks for reading!

960AD – I trade Chemistry and 45 gold to the Romans for Astronomy.
I also trade The Iroquois 120 gold, Incense and 27gpt for Banking.
Then trade Banking to the Romans for Music Theory and 40 gold.

980AD I start work on the Copernicus’s Observatory in Cuzco, hoping to trigger a Golden Age.

1050AD – I trade Wines, Gems Iron and 10gpt to the Germans for Metallurgy.

1090AD – Mauch Chunk builds Copernicus’ Observatory. My chance of getting a Golden age off it is shot.
041.jpg

1110AD I trade the Iroquois 45gpt and 280 gold for Economics

1120 – Huge Iroquois army appears next to Oporto. I REALLY don’t want to be at war with them, so I gift it to the Persians

1130AD – Ok now I’m worried, there are a bunch of French troops in my borders, as well as the Iroquois troops up north, there are now a bunch of German troops going North.

039.jpg

1140AD No! The Germans declare war on us! I must get the Babylonians and Iroquois as allies before the Germans do

I sign the Babylonians and The Iroquois against them giving Gems and Wines respectively. Seeing as there’s a bunch of French troops in my border, I give them Music Theory in exchange for an alliance.

Now I don’t want the Iroquois to slaughter the Germans and take all their land, so I keep my 2 Portuguese slaves on the Chokepoint.

1150AD – German troops capture Sidon… there’s too many of them to just simply take it back. But I’ll do my best before someone else gets it

1160AD – The Iroquois drags Maya into the war against the Germans, and Germany and the Mongols sign one against us. -_-

I make alliances against the Mongols with the Iroquois and the Babs for Incense and 13gpt. Turning them both Gracious. =D

040.jpg

1180AD – What are the French thinking? Lol. I hope they do well, even though they attacked me for no reason and will probably be slaughtered by the Iroquois, the dumb warmongering tramp. No doubt my territory will be the battleground too.

Oh dear the Babylonians capture Frankfurt

1190AD – Babylon drags the Aztecs into the war against Germany, While Magellan’s Voyage is built in Kahnawake, Iroquois

1200AD – Iroquois signs Maya into their war with France.

Damn. The Babylonians capture Sidon. I was hoping to snatch it off someone, but no luck.

1210AD – The Mayans are dragged into a war with the Mongols by Babylon

I trade the Ottomans Saltpeter, 500gold and 2gpt for Physics. I also trade Physics and Metallurgy to the Mayans for Democracy.

The dumb French make peace with the Germans breaking our deal. I’m tempted to unleash the Iroquois on them (I still have control of the chokepoint)

1220AD – Hmmm Maya signs an alliance with Rome against the Mongols, who are right next to each other. I wonder who will win. Hopefully the Mongols. Rome also signs an alliance with Babylon against the Germans.

Hamburg is captured by the Babylonians.

1230 AD – Smiths Trading Company is built in Cuzco, which is what I set it to after I lost Copernicus’s to the Iroquois. No Golden Age, but I get free marketplaces and stuff which is pretty good.

1240AD – The Babylonians sign an alliance with The Ottomans against the Mongols. And seeing I just traded saltpeter to them… The Mongols are pretty much finished.

The Iroquois, Ottomans and Babylon all enter the industrial age

1250AD – I trade 200gold and 87gpt to the Iroquois for Theory of Gravity

1265AD – Babylon brings Persia into the war against Germany

Just noticed Babylon has taken Leipzig and Nuremberg

1280AD – I trade 75gpt and 550gold to the Iroquois for Magnetism which brings me into…The Industrial age!

1290AD – The Iroquois declare war on the Ottomans. I wonder whose side Babylon will take. If Babylon sides with the Ottomans I’ll open up the Chokepoint, allowing them to waste each others units, but I won’t if they side with the Iroquois.

1300AD – I don’t know why but the Ottomans razed Karakorum, which WAS like No.1 on the Top City list.

1305AD – The rampaging Babylonian forces destroy the Germans

I trade Wines, Gems, 75gpt and 400 gold for Steam Power from the Babylonians

1325AD Iroquois sign an alliance with Rome against the Ottomans.

1350AD – Basically there is so much war going on, everyone is tangled in alliances against each other. Basically the Iroquois got all the crappy countries like Rome, Aztecs etc against the Ottomans while The Babylonians just declared war on the Mayans. I also just decided to open the floodgates and let the Iroquois soldiers through my territory at the Ottomans

1360AD – Oh dear:
042.jpg

Closing floodgates ASAP

1385AD – I trade 75gpt, 560 gold, Incense, Iron and Steam Power to the Persians for Nationalism.

1430AD – Finally! I trade 115gpt and 950gold plus some luxury to the Iroquois for Communism. I then trade it to the Persians for Industrialisation and 21gpt. Steam power to the French for 40gpt. I revolt causing NINE turns of anarchy -_-

In other news, the Ottomans at the height of their military conquest, taking over Mongolia have now been almost completely been annihilated by the Babylonians with help from the French and the Romans. The Romans, now having taken over what used to be Mongolia are now a decent little nation. The Babylonians are the most powerful nation in the world now, even overtaking the Iroquois.

1445AD – The Ottomans have been taken out by the Babylonians.

1450AD – NO! Babylon made an alliance with the Iroquois against the Mayans! This means then Mayans will be gone in like 3 turns, and the Iroquois will own that WHOLE peninsula

1460AD – Damn it! For some reason my rep is trashed because of something I’d done to the Ottomans even though I hadn’t betrayed them or anything. This means Im going to have to research things myself. -_-

1475AD- Communism is finally here! My little “Peace + Building up” session didn’t go quite to plan, with me being at war with 2 civs, losing what would have been a good city and three civilisations in the game wiped out and three not far from it.

1485AD – The Aztecs are taken out of the game by the Romans

046.jpg

1520AD – Iron Works is completed in Corihuayrachina, thanks to the nearby Iron and Coal

1540AD Babylon demands gems. >:( I give in not wanting a war just yet.

1625AD – After a long period of industrialisation and railroading, I trade 1000gold for Sanitation from the Iroquois, ready for the advent of hospitals. All size 12 cities switched to hospitals.

1670AD – The Iroquois demand wines as tribute. Still not wanting a war, I give in to them.

1720AD – I realise the Iroquois are in the Modern age. I have no Idea what to do now, as space is enabled and they will beat me to it for sure, seeing as I can’t trade thanks to the Ottomans dying when I had a trade going with them. I think I will declare war, STUFF Lisbon FULL of Riflemen, as it’s my city that is the closest to them, and then drag the Babylonians in against them and hope for the best, my rails will allow the Babylonians to get there in one turn which is good too. And with that, it is the end of this update.

There seems little hope, What you Can do is Effect an Dogpile on the Iroq, you can defend the other civs from being runover using Artillery and superior Tactics, and Maybe Capture a Few Cities.

Noticed you can build Armies, Another thing you Can do is make an Infantry Army and send it to Pillage the Iroq Core.
