Should Internet benefit every civ or does it benefit just the one who builds it?

Once my rival built Internet but only he got the benefits...should it really be like that? I had Computers-tech too.

You don't get the benefits of other wonders (excluding Manhattan Projectic, Apostolic Palace/ UN but they are slightly different). Why should you get the benefit of the Internet? It would defeat the object of building it in the first place.

AlGore invented the Internet, so only he should get to use it
Really though, the internet is such a huge phenomenon, available planetwide, even in space and on aircraft and isolated boats, with information travelling in all directions, so yes. All Civs. (Of course, have to keep in mind places like China or whatever, sorta kinda need electricity and a computer...)

Well it would be pretty lame if everyone got the benefits. Maybe more realistic, but lame nonetheless. All of a sudden all your rivals would get everything too, there'd be no advantage at all to building it unless you were the worst in tech. And by then someone else would have it.

I do wish you could pick which two civs you got the techs from though. I don't understand why it picks for you.

Haven't ever really paid attention, but don't think you have to choose. Think it's if ANY two have it, you get it. (Am I right? Anyone? lol)

It what way does it "pick" for you? I know there is a "WFYABTA" counter related to acquiring technologies from civs but (1) isn't that counter mostly independent of whom you trade with and (2) if you are getting technologies from the Internet do you really need to continue trading for technologies generally (will an AI even trade a technology if they are the only one with its knowledge). Anyway, I thought you just "learned it" once two other civs knew the technology.

internet gives any tech that any 2 other civs have, regardless of who they are and how much they like you. i have in games i have tech lead built it to keep another civ down. but it does not matter who the civs are, if any two have civs the tech and you built internet you get the tech.

Don't...
Trade...
Techs...

I think it works like the Great Library did in CivIII if there are two more advanced civs and both of them have one or more techs you get them too. I could be wrong though, I never build it, because by then the games already over or there really ain't too many techs left to git.. :D

[edit] yeah, just like codeman said now that I've read his post.. :)

the internet should give your entire civ +10 happiness I mean, Porn and youtube hello!

This is one of the two wonders I try to get just to prevent the other players from getting it.

That 100% war weariness thing being the other.

For some reason this thread made me think of this one. Do you notice how people get upset about things who give the builder an advantage only when they don't build them ? :D

And - 20 productivity then. :mischief:

You'd have to check in every city screen if the citizens are working instead of watching porn. Not to mention the  from people reading Civ Fanatics and not liking the way you lead your empire...

-2 "You suck, let's queshua rush someone !"

Everyone gets the benefits of the Internet because its not a Wonder, its a "project" like The Apollo Program and Manhattan Project. Which allow eveyone to build Spaceships and Nukes, respectively.

So if I have a tech lead and I build the internet I'm hurting myself?

By building the internet I'm unlocking all techs known by atleast two other civilizations to all the other civilizations.

Is that how it works?

I thought that the civilization who builds it is the only one to benifit.

The Appollo program. Everybody has to build that for themselves.. or don't they?

I could of sworn they did.

No, if you build the Internet you get for free two techs known by at least two civs. If you have a tech lead, you can use it to skip researching dead-end techs if you don't have any immediate use for them (Flight, for exemple). You can also build it to prevent another civ to build it and catch up.

And yes, everyone must build his own Appollo Program. In addition of the Apocalyptic Palace and the UN, the Manhattan Project is the only "wonder" you can build who will profit to others.

NO, the internet only works for the builder (some other posters feel this is unrealistic - which is true - but this is a game and not a real-life simulator).
In building the Internet with a tech lead you deny the opponent the Internet which can be advantageous. Also, you can focus your research down one path and keep up on other paths via the Internet.

Only Manhattan Project works that way. Internet benefits only the one who built it and each civ has to build its own Apollo Program to construct a spaceship. SDI is also a project and benefits only you.

As for rationale of Internet benefiting only the builder, think of it as building good telecommunications infrastructure. When I remember my phone bills before broadband became widespread and affordable, I can easily imagine civs without it not being able to use its full potential for scientific "espionage". Besides, Monty probably would not even have phones b that time so why should he benefit at all from this devilish contraption build on the other side of the world :)

The Manhattan Project needs to be like the Appollo Program.

And it doesn't need to be announced to the World when a civilization completes their Manhattan Project either.

Same goes for the Appollo program for that matter. I'd rather discover through spies or if somebody gets nuked.

If somebody lauches a shuttle and you didn't know they were even going down that road, oh well.

They go through all this trouble adding spies in BTS, and historically spies are the ones to discover what another nation is building in regards to weapons and technology space programs.
