Im not always in the mood for political discussions either, sometimes they are just the same tedious stuff over and over, same old arguments over and over. Same thing with the religious threads. My solution is simple though: I dont click on those threads when Im not in the mood for that particular topic. Thats all! No need to reinvent the wheel. Click on what interests you, ignore what doesnt.
Problem is there're just so many of them that they overwhelm the lite ones, pushing them to the 2nd pg. Or vice versa.

OT, as it is, is too big - need to chop it.

Perhaps a better solution would be to have three sticky threads: one about Iraq, one about religion and one for creationism vs evolution. Anyone starting another thread about any of those subjects could be banned. There is no need for more than one thread about each because they always become the same after 5 or 6 posts. To make it even more streamlined we could write out all of the possible responses for these threads before-hand and people could just pick the response they agreed with and be saved the trouble of typing it; the rest of us could also be saved the trouble of reading it.

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I don't care what happens.:D

Thats pretty damn funny coming from somebody with almost 6000 posts:lol: Like Jollyroger said, look at the quality of the posts suporting it, and the quality of those against it. With the exception of my two previous posts of course:lol:
I got close to 8000 posts and had never deigned to involve in political threads at all for years.

If you want to compare quality, better take a close look at my history articles in History. :p Better than endlessly recycling political arguments I think, at the very least.

Well, I sort of do, 'cause I've to read thru those tons of garbage, as part of my forum commitment. :p

Some days I just want to ban them all... but can usually get my murderous impulses under control in time. :p

I'm not saying that I don't care in the sense of being apathetic but rather that I have changed my opinion from opposed to indifferent on the subject of the split.

Edit: Feel free to change one no vote to an abstention.

I discovered the joys of the History Forum when I clicked on your history list. Probably like most people, I started out in the Civ General Discussion Forum, and started exploring later on. I quickly fell in love with OT, which is why Im resistant to the idea of changing it. With all due respect to Bose, Id hate to see the OT reduced to threads like his Hungry Hippos Thread:lol: Im not saying that type of thing has no merit, lord knows I have a silly side, but if you want to ban something from OT, it seems odd that you'd pick politics and religion and not mindless stuff like that. Not to pick on Bose, how about the shoe size thread or the how tall are you thread. I mean come on, maybe you arent into politics or religion (which seems odd since youre a history buff, which is all about politics and religion) but do you really want to reduce the OT to mindless fluff? Like I said, Im not always in the mood for those two topics but they are definitely important subjects to discuss. You say you hate having to wade through all the politics and religion threads, but wouldnt you still have to anyway regardless of what forum theyre in? It seems to me that youre approaching this the wrong way. Politics and religion, while contentious and sometimes boring will always be valid topics, so why not make a Mindless Fluff forum instead? Shoe size, how tall you are and hungry hippos would fit in there just fine.

There's no fence-sitting on this one. :p

Either you're with us, or against us...

Wait! :mischief:

Edit : One 'no' vote down...

Don't pick on the hippos man...:worship:

Seriously, it wont comedown to all nonsense threads, it'll just separate the lighthearted serious ones to the hardcore political threads. If anything, it will help everyone keep away from the threads they don't like.

Take it from me, this is not the case. For alot of the older posters, the political debates are the major source of frustration...

Bah, take it from me: many poster stay here because of the politics!

indeed, I love OT political discussions, but due to the big amount of other stuff that doesn't really interest me, I can't find a good one. Maybe it'll keep serious people from clowns as well btw; it hasn't happened recently, but sometimes discussions get messed up by some joker. I'm in favor of the change, and I'm an old member :D

I don't see how people can vote yes when the proposal has been changed so many times what they voted for might not be what happends.

SO...... Please leave off topic intact

Exactly my point! To what are people voting yes? To 'something must be different'?

XIII, I'd really like a well argumented proposal to vote on. This simply makes no sense!

Let's both stay here for both reasons AND draw the old regulars back...

That's hardly possible IMO - they have found their own place, and have no good reason to return. :(

I'm remaking OT to prevent another similar exodus in future, and making this place less dreary and more fun and easy to participate in (as well as mod in).

How about cause they like the place? I bet they're just like me and still lurk a bit... If things changed, they'd know about it, and who knows, we might get a few of the old guns back...

If this effect (getting back some well respected posters) occurs, I welcome the idea! It should at least be tried then. I really do miss Meldor and Greadius for instance....

But, why did those old guns go? I PM-ed some of them a while back. Main reason, afaicc, is the 'not-so-mature' way of debating. Will a seperate forum help prevent this and thus prevent another exodus whenever the next major political event will show up?
I doubt that..... But hey, it might be worth a try.

meldor still plays Civ3 SGs - he was one of my regular partners when I was still into a year or more ago...

Greadius - I won't say.

Haven't you been reading what I said?

Politics. Specifically juvenile political discussions with constant recycled themes w/o any new works being thrown in. Or at least, that's my impression.

IMO, they won't come back. I'm doing this for the future OT.
