The map generator is NOT random...

I will not state that some civs allwasy start on cost or in jungle. I will say they have tendancy to do so and map generator tend to place them there, if it can.

So, some times they get different starts, but they do have some preferable starts.

This is an interesting proposition. If someone who has experience in map scripts could look into this, that would be helpful. It would be quite a shock if they actually started industrious leaders near stone or something.

I've only played with Ragnar once, and I did not have a coastal start with him.

I did start next to a rather large freshwater lake, though.

That game was pretty crazy, I actually used the Oracle to pop Philosophy... because I had already researched CoL before I started the Oracle.

For whatever reason, nobody else had done it either.

Just to followup on this. My latest Warlords leader on Marathon/Huge using everything random is Frederick. Have started about 15 games until I settled with one I liked (I usually do not have that many with a leader). Overall I found 1) most random starts (I would estimate 80%) were arid rather than temperate/tropical/cold/rocky 2) 80% of the time Marble (can you say great library) was within one of the first three cities but NEVER stone, 3) About half the time my settler did not start on a coast but was landlocked on a river/Oasis/Lake, 4) Horses/Copper/Iron are almost always within settling distance. So the random generator is not random for specific leaders. My question is " Does Frederick always start like this even when he is an AI" which means if he has the techs he's going to get the Great Library first since he will likely have marble. Also I noted he tends to have certain AIs (10 others on Marathon) arround him such as Mao, Ghengis, Hyuna.

I suspect it is random, but eh - never mind.

Only way to know for sure: lots of starts with lots of leaders in a lot of computers ( it could be related to CPU clock or something of that kind).
Looks extremely boring to me...

Not the only way at all! Most of the Civ 4 code can be read by anyone who knows the programming languages.
