The Most Dangerous Game - Small Pangaea FFA

Already? I've not found you or Alexi, what's going on?

I've been invaded by the belligerent Zulus but they've been scared off and now appear to be retreating.

Onwards.

im still offended that im falling so fast in the scoreboard! now it seems Alexi is passing me too.. everyone must be cheating but me!!11 :crazyeye: :gold: to be honest i have no idea how the scoring system works, sometimes it just seems to give random boosts.

you can hover over your name in the scoreboard and it shows you a breakdown.

Score = techs + population + land tiles in your cultural borders + wonders

Since Etienne is cultural and has two cities (I can confirm) he's at the top based (mostly) on land area. We're not far enough in to get huge differences in techs yet and population is only worth I think 2 points / person so at the moment doesn't account for much difference. And no-one has any wonders except their palace.

Oh, and sent.

Well there's a very simple explanation for why Etienne and Gareth got a boost in score: they're both Creative. Means that their capitals probably got their 2nd culture pop, and their second cities will soon be getting their first. Land area is directly related to score. Also, if you have water tiles in your cities, it reduces your score cause it doesn't count as land.

From what I've gathered, score is basically just a combination of land area + wonders (they give a significant boost) + technology. I don't think military size or amount of workers or even number of cities really have any relationship with score, so I think we can all agree it's an inaccurate way of counting a civilization's position in a game, especially at the start.

Gareth beat me to the punch! Also, I just got the save like while I was writing that comment. Etienne sent it hella fast. Anyways, mine is sent as well.

and sent again!

thanks guys for the score-tutorial, another thing learnt in civ.. the water-thingie explains why Tankra is not on top, i guess (thats some fast worker-settler producing right there!)

to follow up on the score discussion, I did not get a single point when my capital's cultural borders expanded last turn. only points i got the last 3 turns were the ones i got this turn for completing a tech. thats exactly what i meant when i said sometimes it just gives points on random - its not as simple as it seems.

True, same thing happened with me. I honestly think that the score is almost completely irrelevant though. You're better off looking at the demographics screen if you want to know where you stand. Also, this game will *probably* not end in a Time victory, so the score will continue to be irrelevant :D

I think some elements of score [land area, but not techs] can be delayed a turn (not sure why). It's not random and if you actually care it's pretty easy to work out exactly how its calculated.

Score can be useful early on as you can use it to work out how technologically advanced your opponent is before Alphabet. Takes some effort though.

Since at the beginning it's largely dominated by land it can be indicative of how well you're doing because within reason more cities = better long-term position. Later in the game land area is less of a factor so again it's useful as in general more techs = better position.

My point, though, is that you're better off looking at the demographics screen to know how you're doing with respect to anything, really. Land area, population, GNP, production... Those are all more valuable pieces of information than score, which can be easily skewed by a civilization just having really big, useless cities, or a player who's just constructed so many wonders that aren't all that useful.

And in my experience, having a lower score than someone really does not preclude you from being able to either out-tech or have a larger military than him. In fact, it could be deceiving, cause someone slaving up a large army ready to attack you would have a pretty bad score.
