I'm playing a current game:

Dutch/Hemispheres (2 continents)/Standard/Normal

I started on a content with Khmer and Washington. I REX'd like crazy early on chopping workers/settlers in most cities to expand and claim as much land is possible (see my sig).

Then I beelined optics-astronomy for exploration and settling islands. I had the map clean like satellies ca. 1600 AD  That was SOOOOOOOO fun!!!

I never declared war or got declared on (monitored diplo closely as Khmer and GW hated each other early). I kept my power high by pumping units and teching some advanced military techs.

I ended up with a 21-city empire PEACEFULLY :D :D :D And I am currently sending 4 settlers to get some island spots (that have 2 whales that I need) south of Gilgamesh. So, if I'm able to get them, that will be 25 cities peacefully  I will probably assign a bunch of the cities to a colony once I am confident I have the GNP to win comfortably.

Check it out!!!

EDIT: I forgot to say I also tried out a new tactic that worked very well. Since I was Creative, I beelined drama and construction after my immediate priorities were done and then I got theatres and coliseums in all my cities. Then I rand 20% culture slider until astronomy when I could trade for overseas :) resources and most :) buildings were online, etc. This +6 :) in all my cities completely helped curb all my :) worries throughout a critical part of the game. The AI was teching insanely slow anyways, so losing the 20% research didn't hurt at all--in fact I would say it helped because the extra :) let me run many more cottages across my whole empire and as we know it is not the slider per se that matters but the total beakers being produced!!! I still managed to be first to optics THEN first to liberalism ca. 1300AD then took astronomy off liberalism ftw! (Hannibal probably could've beat me to lib, but he went for nationalism instead. I lost the taj to him, but that was acceptable).

I also should mention that I had low production, but was able to rush-buy the SoL and Kremlin :D

That does look like fun.

Also, I guess what you're sort of saying is that LAND IS POWER. Is that right? :)

Cheers.

Land reclamation is power probably. Better make sure the spaceship is big enough for all the dope and strippers. I can see the astronauts now with their orange space helmets. They'll probably need a big supply of space cake too.

Amen to that. No one can currently match my GNP and I am 2nd in production--about to be 1st once I capture the Khmer small-but-productive empire. I am going to hit him super-hard with tanks once I am first to industrialism...

With the Dutch, WATER is power. Dikes rock!

Yeah, dikes are good. I just got steam power online and am rushing them in many of my cities right away.

Well, I wanted to DoW on Khmer but instead I decided I had some GMs and GAs kicking around and I wanted to found some corporations. I founded Sushi, Cereal (waste imo since I had sushi, didn't realize), Mining (prod cities only), Alum, and Jewels. Sushi was my main bread winner over +100 gpt in my wallstreet city. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a GE early enough for creative constructions.

I liberated 3 cities to a newly-formed Issy late-game. Didn't really do anything, but I got to see how it worked. Turns out I couldn't just liberate any island city I wanted to her...not sure the selection criteria on that.

I won via space race in 1920 while the AI was STILL very backwards in tech. I wasn't trying for a fast win but rather just enjoying some of the new features (sending a million spies to Hannibal, spreading corps, etc.).

This was by far the most fun game of civ I've ever played. And I never declared war once. Maybe those builders have the right idea

blasphemy! ;) As for the liberation, i'm pretty sure they have to be on the same land mass to liberate them to your colony. if you want to try something fun, play hemispheres with a lot of continents. When you go to take over another civ's continent, just liberate all the cities as you go, basically replacing an entire civ with a new one :king:

yeah dutch are crazy late game. dikes are universally good, towns making 2 hammers is just gross. space race win in early 1800 on monarch marathon (yeah probably coulda been faster but I was screwing around)

dutch teching rate can be somewhat crazy if you decide to go warlike its pretty easy to get a military tech gap and lay waste. with construction.. i'm amazed you could stay peaceful ;) swords and cats before they have siege woulda been brutal.

unrelated, but you gotta try to national park. I had a late game city with that and national epic.. it was somewhat crazy. clear the area around it and the preserves will fill it all back in with forest. a bunch of tiles that are 2F 2H plus gobs of free specialists. good times.

yeah, i forgot about national park but will try to remember next game. i was playing peacefully because I didn't want to get into a protracted war if i could help it. i had a lot of good land i could claim. and then i was having too much fun building

I'm playing my second game now as Dutch on same type of map but having a lot of war with my one neighbor on our continent. I've found the East Indiaman is really a powerful unit for controlling the seas. It's really a dominating ship before the modern ships come around, and that's no problem if you ignore espionage on a water map and stay in the tech lead.

This unit beats down any caravals and moves tons of units everywhere, and is great for pillaging since you can already be in enemy waters before declaring war. Combined with a couple Frigates and throw in some Privateers for fun, and you're jumping from island to island or really helping the attack on coastal cities. My dikes are just coming online now. This is a fun leader to play even at war.

with the health effects of factories, enginner park etc. I found it impossible to stay in state property. so my ironworks city suffered because of 1f workshops. I pillaged them out and let forest from nearby preserves move in, and replaced them with lumbermills and ended up with the same effect less 1 hammer.

food for thought.
