The most fun unit?

Partisans are anti-engineer for two reasons.

Firstly and most directly, they get that overkill attacking bonus against engineers, settlers, and other no-attack units (thanks Sodak, I didn't know the exact multiplier). Within a modern AI's frontiers, engineers are about the only units you'll see outside cities, and these are easy prey for the partisan. Defending against other units, engineers are actually pretty tough.

Secondly, partisans have movement freedoms that make them good pillagers, deleting the work of engineers. They are not blocked by zone of control, and treat all land squares (except railroad) as road. A partisan could, in one turn, travel by rail past an enemy's cities, go over a mountain, occupy a hill surrounded by enemy units, and pillage the mine on that hill.

Partisans are durable enough to be a chore to dislodge or hunt down. But they're cheap enough that you can make them in droves. I don't want to argue the cost effectiveness of partisans on a 'fun' thread, though. The main reason I build them is for the good of the environment. I like to return a civ's lands to primordial beauty.

Explorers are pretty fun revealing the map, popping huts.
Dragoons are great fun, they can take out any ancient unit
-which makes up the majority of the AI's units when you get leadership.
Howitzers are so much fun killing anything hiding behind a wall.
My last vote goes for Stealth Fighters, fun finding those cities the AI tries to sneak build behind you.

Ancient: Elephants
Medievil: Dragoons / Cavalry
Modern: Armor / Howitzer / Spy

Spies are the most fun overall. They are also the most flexible & quite possibly the most powerful.

Ancient -- two move (+) searchers
Mid -- Cavalry, Ironclad
Mod -- Howies

I like engineers a lot as well -- not only for growth, but also their capability to help speed up offensive punches.

IN your opinion;what is the unit you most enjoy playing with in the ancient, medievil, modern:eras?

Ancient - As many Settlers as I can crank out. :)

Medievil - Knights for offense, pikemen on defense.

Modern...ahh, here's where things get fun.

I'll have to break this one into categories :

Ground Assault - Armor
Ground Support - Partisans
Air Assault - Stealth Bomber
Air Support - Helicopters
Sea Assault - Transports
Sea Support - Battleships

The first Civ to get all 6 of these is pretty much assured victory.

I really try not to get into major wars until I've got Conscription. I prefer to make use of my first 4000 years for expanding and researching as fast as I can without conflict. Usually by then, my cities are primed and ready to become a war machine.

From there my choice of weapon depends on the proximity of my enemies to my front lines. On large land masses, Spies take care of outlying cities, while I might send Helicopters deeper into enemy territory to soften the route my Armor and Partisans take toward the capital city - my primary objective when warring.

If my maps are more tilted toward sea battles, or my enemy is on a smaller land mass, then Battleship escorted Transports bring 2 waves of death and destruction with a mix of Marines, Partisans, and Spies. I'll subvert one city, then use it to crank out military units and swarm the island.

The Partisans will usually be fortified in the ever-present fortresses the AI is happy to build for invading armies, and I'll bring a carrier full of bombers or fighters to soften city defenses.

Definitely Spy, you all know why

or Battleship maybe, just tearing up the defenses of cities on the water before a land attack

Looks like just about all of us enjoy modern units most.

The question was really which units from each epoch do we enjoy the most, but it's usually not until the modern epoch that we're in a position to pulverise our enemies and fully enjoy using our units. If we could easily crush our enemies during the time of, say chivalry, we'd all be swearing by knights, I think.

I chose partisans because, in truth, I use them when I'm well ahead of the other civs, and want a lazy means of keeping them down.

I guess I do enjoy knights most. They come just after a road network's been layed, and really move. They look good. They attack well enough for most situations, and defend well enough to move with confidence. With knights, the nation is secure and cohesive. Since civ1, I've always kept a royal guard of two or three knights at the capital, and I know that's sentimental, so I know these units I enjoy most.

I can't help but notice a unit that a lot of people really like.... the mighty Vet Howitzer!

:)

i can't believe noone has aid the nuclear missile!

i know it causes more problems than it solves (in the game, as well as reality) but isn't it just so much fun seeing the explosion and hearing that air raid siren, and knowing you can just now wander in with a pikeman and take an entire city?

I should point out i'm still only talking about the game...

though i would wonder what one was doing with a pikeman in the era of nuclear weapons...

In my latest game I have become very fond of the battleship, undercertain circumstances. They are easy to make vet, but I like to have them with Magellan and Nuke Power so they've got a move of 7 and only sail them westward. This means that they are moving in the direction the graphic is pointing and they just look so mean, even when they're not ripping the enemy defenders to shreds. :D I'm sure that the broadside animation for the Civ 3 battleship is good too. :goodjob:

stealth fighters. i like hearing them go "chomp chomp chomp" over the enemie's engineers howitzers spies and helocopters he litters the landscape with. they are lik vacuum cleaners except their sound is definitely "chomp".

Ancient.......Archer[dance]
Medievil......Knight:beer:
Modern......Armor[dance]

I just love bringing the Armor up to the gates of the enemy city;and knocking to see if any one is home!

The engineer is something that can't be ignored. They support my ground operations so much by creating wonderfully useful roads to shorten supply lines and put fortresses and changing terrain to be more defensible. Spies, partisans and engineers are all great ways to add support for my armies. Engineers are especially useful when the AI starts pillaging roads with their partisans.

freight and engineers .. because .. late in the game the terrain is covered with them and they take so much time to move them all.

Perhaps it's irresponsible, but it's so fun to just mow down the AI's wandering unfortified ground units with a stealth fighter... Then again, it's so painful to see your own vulnerable troops get squashed by the same attack.

spies, armor, and musketeers, in that order. by the dozens.

Tanks and all are cool, but I have a real soft spot for legions. They're slow but they're strong, and cut through the enemies' archers and phalanxs early in the game. They're unstoppable if you can attack down from a mountain or hills. I know musketeers are actually stronger, but I'm always a little disappointed when my loyal little legions get upgraded.

Ancient -- Legion
Medieval -- Knights
Industrial -- Dragoons
Modern -- Fighters/Stealth fighters
