The city lists, though riddled with errors, make more sense if you view them in historical prespective. The current size of cities is of no importance.
Perhaps the Mumbles was an prominent mining centre at some time?
Perhaps Königsberg was the place of a king (König)?

I agree with ivory

you got to have a historical perspective...

that's why it uncomprehensible why Portugal isn't one of the tribes...

although it's presently a small unimportant country in the XV century it was along with Spain the most powerful nation in the whole world

Spanish and Portuguese even signed a treaty (at tordesillas) where they divided the world in 2 hemispheres...
the western one to Spain
the Eastern one to Portugal

that's way Portugal expanded to the East (India, Macau,China, Japan)
and Spain to the West (Central and south america with exception of brazil which was also portuguese)

shame on you tribe chooser...

It would be nice if we could choose the next city name from the list.

Face it, there is no real wisdom in the city or leader list.
Don’t forget the guys who made it are most likely nice to their wives, pay taxes, have a fine sense of humour, an above-average IQ, and do know that other countries exist…but they are still US Americans, truly convinced the majority of the world population lives in North America, and no foreign city matches the cultural influence of New York, Hollywood or Carson City.
So imagine a nice evening, barbeque perhaps, and some Geeks sit around: “Now, what Civ is next? Germany, ok. Does anybody know other cities than Berlin?” “There were a lot of headlines in the last time about a town called ‘Leipzig’, when the GDR came to an end.” (remember, we’re back in early Nineties, when they made the list for Civ1, which is pretty much the one still in use ). “Fine, we’ll take it.”. “I’ve heart the name ‘Hamburg’; funny people, those Germans, naming a town for fast food!” “I know for sure that ‘Frankfurt’ was very important throughout the German history, (this came from the usual incredibly well informed Nerd), and…” “ No, you’ve had your turn, someone else please!” “Munich, they have that famous hofbrauhaus.” “Heidelberg, my uncle recently was there on his ‘Europe in one week’-trip” “Cologne” (the Egghead again). “Here, on my bottle of Beck’s, there is written ‘brewed in Bremen’” and so on.
Several years later, they met again to make a Leader list for Civ3…”There’s this famous ‘Red Baron’, what’s his real name? Richthofen, Richtoffen, or something like that?” “I know for sure that Frederic I. Barbarossa was one of the most important rulers” (the Nerd) “Too long, we’ll just take Barbarossa” “I know that comic ‘Ivanhoe’, they often talk about a Germanic king called ‘Horsa’” “Yes, I read that too when I was a child, and I also remember the name ‘Hengest’”.

That simply is the only possible explanation why they mainly picked cities and persons from Hollywood movies, without any spell checking, or Anglo-Saxon leaders. The only question is: Where is Neuschwanstein, Rothenburg and Hitler?

No offence intended, but those lists are so incredibly bad, compared to the great job they did in programming. One afternoon of Internet recherché would have been sufficient.

Don’t know about The Mumbles, but Brandenburg or Königsberg were never really important in German history.

I suspect that somebody came across the name "The Mumbles" and liked it.

What a muppet :p

Will explain later, I really should have left for London 10 minutes ago!

True, "Mumbles" is indeed a real place in Wales, and for all you trivia fans out there, it is where Catherine Zeta Jones was born.

It's even more curious when, say, a place like Leeds with one of the highest urban populations in England didn't make it onto the list. Quite bizzare, really.

I am from Leeds and was well peeved that it never seemed to appear on city lists... Then I played GOTM20 and the English go and plonk it on my northern territory... if it had had any other name I would have attempted to get rid of it but since it was Leeds I left it alone... hope it doesn't cost me the game!
Incidently where are Birmingham and other large English cities? Oxford has a university and that's it... Nottingham has some fine pubs and Robin Hood... no wait, I'm spotting a pattern here...

Yes, but the point is that The Mumbles is in Wales and not in England. It's a bit like saying Toronto is in the USofA.

I think some Yank was havin' a laf and thought that we Limeys mumble when we talk cos he couldn't understand our accent.
Meanwhile, as we all know, it's the Yanks that mumble....

They need more Welsh town names as English cities in Civ3 in my opinion. I'm not trying to offend anyone Welsh or English or anyone at all, but I just think that Wales has played a very important role in British history. The Welsh people are cool, nice people (so nice they're kinda like the elderly grandparent type you can't swear in front of) and they have done a lot, but most of that was under English rule. The Welsh were the best longbowmen in the world and the English loved that, am I right? The Welsh were master artists and still are to this day, in fact I'd say that every Welshman that isn't in civil service or sheep herding is an artist. Sir Anthony Hopkins, Tom Jones (I think), Dylan Thomas (my middle namesake), Charlotte Church, Catherine Zeta Jones, and too many more to mention. But most of the greatest Welsh cultural and scientific achievments were under English rule, which in all truth has been for 750 years. So I think that rather than being a seperate civilization of its own, that the Welsh are/would be better served by being a unique and respected part of the British civilization. So i think there should be more Welsh cities in the English/British Civ.

P.S. It should be noted that many Welshmen gave their lives or their youth for the cause of freedom in World War 2, and many here in the U.S. don't recognize the great sacrifices of other nations in this conflict.

Let's just blame the entire name/citylist/leaderlist/leaderhead thing on the real culprits-- Hollywood and American ignorant/arrogant portrayals of other cultures.

But to go more in depth and essentially into blame...

It's the Nazis fault! If they hadn't invaded France and allowed/encouraged the Vichy government to shut down all the film studios in the French Riviera that were founded by people that were sick of Hollywood commercial-sell-out-ism, then we would have better entertainment now! Then they had to go and cause the shut down of the British studios with their stupid war! That's why some of the best American movies EVER came out during and right after World War 2. The exiled emigres returned and made good movies at smaller studios or even some bigger ones *cough* Casablanca *cough*.

So it's not the production company or the designer's fault,
IT'S THE NAZI'S FAULT!

It's possible to 'force' this. While founding a city, at the moment that you have the naming box on the screen: cancel it. Your settler will become available again and next time you choose to build a city it defaults to another name (assumably the next one in the list).:)
