THE My most absurd starting location THREAD

This is a good necro. I always thought this thread had alot of potential. :goodjob:

I'm many, many miles behind TMIT in civ skills, but I'll play this one too. I changed it to Emperor and Marathon. The rest of the settings are the same.

Round 1 - 4000BC - 1030AD - This post.
Round 2 - 1030AD - 1574AD

I was feeling very bad by the way the game was going that I restarted it. Consider the first attempt a defeat, follow the links to the second one:

Spoiler :

This map is difficult. I wasn't lucky with the barb galleys either. Initial research was something like fishing, mining, BW, sailing, hunting, archery, writing, alphabet, currency and started Code of Laws.

I had two nice events in the beginning: the health event and free shock for my axes.

Then I thought, "Alright, I have a galley, a settler and a warrior. Let's found a new city." Then the raging barbs reminded me to be just a little more careful:

They just didn't expect me to be such a persistent man, because it made me research Archery and build a new city in that exact same spot. This time a little bit more protected, though.

Now I have to be honest with you guys. I had already read TMIT's report of this game, so I knew where to hook up copper easily. I sent a settler straight there because I needed Axes. My Archers were holding their ground, but I needed to expand and also develop my land. And that's how Baghdad was founded.

One of the worst things of being away from most civs (almost said semi-isolated, but Attacko doesn't like it) is that you lose your reference. Compared to the Vikings, I think we are doing well. He's more advanced than us, but he's only got two cities. Toynbee was also kind enough to take us back to earth.

Then I got lucky again and got Mathematics from a hut.

With a two pop whip, I transfered the palace to Visigoth and the economy became functional again.

It would be nice if more people played this map. If anyone is interested, I can upload the WB file to let you play on the speed and difficulty you want. Just let me know.

i WB saved this for the japanese start, the flood planes on the north is an excellent location for the capital, but I'm a religion whore so i didnt bother with national epic at all, there was just no good place except the island and i already needed statues and wallstreet there.

We need to revive this thread! But why am I saying this? I have nothing to offer...

Round 2 - 1030AD - 1574AD. I think I've already lost now, but will play it to the end.

Spoiler :

I'm not feeling too good about the game right now. As you'll find out, both Mansa Musa and Huayna Capac start inland. On Noble, HC didn't hold against the barbs, but on Emperor he did. Needless to say that fortified Skirmishers eat Barb Axes for breakfast. Anywho, I was found by both of them and they have more cities than me by far. In fact, Mansa Musa even has Astronomy and settled a city in our continent. That's unacceptable. I'm 90% sure I won't win, but I'll play this to the end. Everybody we know is preparing for war right now. We have Longbows that are able to hold them before they get Rifles. Enough talking, let's go to the pictures.

Rerun, Round 1 - 4000BC - 1335AD

Spoiler :

This time I did things in a different way. Instead of rushing to settle the continent, I decided to develop a little Mecca while researching key economic techs, like Currency and Code of Laws. Our initial development was faster than the other way but we need to expand now and that's what we're doing. The barbs have settled most of the continent for us. The Arabs have sent a diplomatic party to establish good relations with them, as you'll see in the following screenies. (Some of the cities will have to be resettled. What's the deal with the AI and bad city placement anyway?)

Good news is that Ragnar is not at such a good situation. He had four cities and lost them all, except for his capital. He already settled them back, but it sure slowed him down. We haven't made contact with anyone else so there's no way of knowing whether Rags is in WHEOOHRN mode or not. (He probably is, after all he is Ragnar).

Huayna Capac has been destroyed by the barbs this time, so it's just one super AI to worry about. One funny thing we might discover soon enough is a barb holy city.
