I started a thread specifically to seek answers on the "Nationalism" bug. Reloading from autosave games, I have repeated experiencing system crash upon completion of the research for nationalism. I do not know if the crash is related to user selections upon beginning the game, i.e. map size or civilization.

I am playing Civ III with the latest patches. After incessant introduction crashes, I was able to run Civ III by deleting the .bik (movie) file.

I have a Pentium IV 1.7 with 256 megabytes of RAM. My video card is an Xtasy GeForce 3 Ti 200 with 64 megabytes of video RAM. My sound card is based on a new Gigabyte Main Board. I am running DirectX 8.1 and have new drivers for video and sound. I do not know if the crash is related to video, however, I have loaded updated monitor drivers from CTX.

I use Windows 98SE as my operating system with all service packs and upgrades. I run Civ III with no TSRs. This includes disabling Norton's CrashGuard and Antivirus.

Any thoughts?

After reading this and other fora, I think Firaxis and Infogrames have disappointed many stalwart Civ fans. I have enjoyed turn-based strategy games, particularly Sid Meier productions. Civilization 2 and Alpha Centauri remain on my hard drive. Railroad Tycoon provided many hours of trouble free enjoyment. There is no excuse for buggy software. I have read enough complaints by people who obviously know hardware and software to believe the problem is not limited to individuals who are using the CD drive as a cup holder. Civ III is still a signficant patch away from a reasonable level of stability. As much as it pains me, Meier and Firaxis suffer from Microsoft Syndrome. While the original Civ was DOS 6.22; Civ III is Windows ME. That, my friends, is an insult.

ME TOO. Nationalism and crash. Thing is I like the game (over Civ II) but have given up on ever finishing one. Took me a week to get it up and running and now this. Who ever decided that this game was ready to market?

Eventully tried the original 1.07 version straight off the disk. I had never used this, upgraded to 1.16 as soon as I got the game.
Reloaded a game that got stuck at Nationalism and guess what; no problem.
Finally managed to finish (and win) a game. Cultural victory about 1914, only warlord, but gave me a buzz.
Just hope the next patch deals with this bug. Will just stick with 1.07 for now.

I am running the latest patched version that crashes. I may try another reinstall, but I'm not overly optimistic. I think its a Civ III code problem.

Sorry CB maybe I did not make that clear. I was getting the crash with the latest patched version. Its the original unpatched version that is now working OK.
Uninstall; just load from disk and try a game saved from just before the crash if you have kept one.
