Note: See this post for the updates I made following the v1.52 patch.

I have had it up to HERE with Firaxis's shoddy treatment of PBEM!!! :gripe:

Civilization has always had the potential to be the ultimate PBEM game, given its epic length and deeply analytical strategic nature. And it continues to be a great PBEM game in spite of Firaxis's support of it!

I refuse to allow my favorite game franchise to fall short of its potential simply because the developers and quality assurance testers don't play PBEM. It's obvious that they don't, because Firaxis has repeatedly dropped the ball on issues that specifically pertain to the PBEM community. I think that it's time that we PBEM players expressed solidarity, and compiled a centralized list of issues that we want to see resolved.

A little background on me: I have been administrating PBEM games since the release of Civ3:PTW. I administrate 16 PBEM games as of this posting, and I just launched my 19th PBEM game (my second Civ 4 game). I start a new game at the rate of approximately one every other month, and I easily fill each eight-player game within hours of posting the ad here on CFC. While most of my players are repeat players, I attract multiple new players with each new game that I start.

I play PBEM almost exclusively, preferring it to both single-player and online multiplayer Civ play. I know I am not alone; many of my players are similar in this respect. The PBEM community may be small, but we are dedicated and enthusiastic players of the game. We love Civilization, and we want to play!

So I propose creating a centralized list of issues specifically pertaining to PBEM play. I will attempt to update this list as new issues are revealed or old issues resolved, but I don't know for how long I will be able to edit this original post - hence I may update the list by posting a reply to this thread.

With enough effort from the PBEM community, we should be able to get this post stickied. Regardless, feel free to bump the post by adding your two cents!

So here is my initial list of Civ 4 PBEM issues that need to be addressed:

1. Firaxis has historically been unconcerned with PBEM continuity.

Make no mistake - we want bugs fixed! However, Firaxis has heretofore failed to display a proactive approach in maintaining game continuity. Ever since PTW, many PBEM players have had to maintain multiple versions of the game just to continue games in which they've already invested months or years. Two of my current games are still run on v1.20 of C3C because the v1.22 patch won't load them. The v1.09 patch of Civ 4 won't load password-protected games of v1.00, and my first Civ 4 PBEM game (Game 18) may have to be restarted as a result.

We would appreciate some consolation from the developers. It is not fun to abandon games for technical reasons, especially after months of time have been invested in them. It is not fun to maintain multiple versions of the game for the sake of maintaining game continuity. It is not fun to have to search for ways of hacking the game just so that we can keep playing.

2. Civilization IV has a distinct lack of PBEM administrative tools.

Maybe I'm oblivious, but I have yet to determine how it is that I as an administrator am supposed to kick a player from a Civ 4 PBEM game. Civ 3 at least had an admin password with which I could override any player-entered password; Civ 4 has nothing! I had to seriously consider whether I wanted to start any Civ 4 PBEM games without admin tools, but I decided to gamble on them being implemented before I had to kick another player.

3. Player names appear to change arbitrarily in Civ 4 PBEM games.

Read this thread for a description of the problem, as well as my Game 18 home thread.

If you have an issue you would like to see added, or just want to rant, feel free to reply. Please keep this post bumped - it's about time we PBEM players started getting some attention!

just to comment the point 3, that's not a PBEM problem but general problem. It's happened to me several times in single player too. It's due to some overridings in the .ini file.

I have nothing to say about point 1 but I (as well as everyone else who played PBEM, I believe) fully support you for the issue number 2, which needs to be addressed ASAP. I suspect the devs never played a PBEM game if they came up with such an admin-lacking system as Civ4 PBEM.

One thing I cant believe they haven’t added, is the ability to start the game in MP and get through some of the slow stuff, when you only have one turn and all your doing is clicking end to your turn!

A group of guys I know had a great game going after getting through all the slow stuff and the next patch stomped on that game and we had to start again

They do need to look at this stuff for the next patch! :(

Now that I have had some time to play around with v1.52, it's time for an update. Those issues that have reduced in prominence have had their font sizes reduced and/or text color changed, and one new issue has been added at the end.

1. Firaxis has historically been unconcerned with PBEM continuity.

The v1.52 patch was thankfully backward-compatible with previous save games. So long as Firaxis continues to be conscious of the need to load previously saved games of earlier versions, I won't need to rant any more on this topic.

2. Civilization IV has a distinct lack of PBEM administrative tools.

Thank you, finally, for admin passwords in v1.52! At least now I have the ability to override another player's password and either change it for another player, or kick that player from the game.

However, I would like to see additional functionality added to the admin password. Ideally I would like to see an "admin interface" for the game. From this interface, I would like to be able to do the following:
  1. change another player's password without having to load his or her turn,
  2. kick a player from the game without having to load his or her turn,
  3. change a human-controlled civilization to being computer-controlled, or
  4. change a computer-controlled civilization to being human-controlled.
I'm sure there are other features that could be implemented in such an interface as well.

3. Player names appear to change arbitrarily in Civ 4 PBEM games.

I believe this issue has been resolved as of v1.52.

4. Neither of the mods available in v1.52 can be played as hotseat/PBEM games.

As I noted in this thread, neither the "American Revolution" nor the "Desert War" mods included with v1.52 can be played as either hotseat or PBEM. And see this thread for the lengths to which hotseat players are willing to go to play their scenarios!

I don't know what prevents mods technically from being played as hotseat and PBEM games, but I would very much like to see that changed. We PBEM players enjoy scenarios just as much as the other players, and I personally relish variety in my games.

Thanks for chiming in onedreamer and Sleighty. It's good to know that there are other concerned PBEM players out there!

From my own view - whilst pitboss is not pbem - in that you have to be online to play I do see it as a midway stage in that you can play over a period of time and you can also arrange to all get together to progress a game so from my perspective I would like to see a lot of effort towards that. I will certainly now play pitboss games in favour of pbem - even at this stage of the development, simply because synchronous turns really speeds the turns up.

I dont think it work be hard to write a tool to kick a player by converting them into an AI.. anything else user related you would want to do? (except wiping or changeing player passwords directly.. I dont know how to do that in 1.52)

Gyathaar,

I apologize for taking so long to reply. My move to Las Vegas forced me incommunicado for a little while, and circumstances to date have been rather hectic. I can't conceive of any additional functionality I'd like to see added to the admin password other than what I listed above, but I will be sure to post any additional ideas here.

I also haven't yet had the opportunity to play with your Mod Hotseat/PBEM conversion tool, but I'm looking forward to experimenting with it. Thanks for your efforts! :goodjob:
