the oobs 3rd pitboss game (Warlords), 14 players

I was asked some questions by email, I'll put the questions and answers up here just in case it helps anyone else:

Q) Hi, I haven't played pitboss before and had a couple of questions. What is Hamchi for? Best I can figure is that it allows access through firewalls or something like that.
A) It's basically a virtual LAN program, so we will be able to play the game as though we are all on the same LAN. Last time I tried to have a lot of people play at the same time we ran into issues which I'm hoping to avoid by using Hamachi for the accelerated start (and normal direct ip connections after that).

Q) Also, what is the accelerated start?
A) It's a period where everyone will be in the game at the same time, so we can get through the earlier, shorter turns quickly.

Q) How long does it last?
A) Two hours, including set up time. We may go longer than that if everyone is happy to do so, but you will only be obligated to stay for two hours, if at any time after that someone needs to leave they can.

Q) Just to make sure I have the time zone right you are 5 hours ahead of central time US correct?
A) I don't know, check the link I gave in the announcement thread:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

If you have daylight savings coming up (or ending) sometime in the next few weeks then you should check that page again just before the accelerated start.

It will be at 1am UTC time, check when that is in your time zone. The page says what the current UTC time is below the list of countries, compare that to one of the cities in the list that's in the same time zone as you to figure out the time difference.

So for instance, I know that auckland is in the same time zone as me, and the time it shows for auckland is 12 hours ahead of the time it shows for UTC, so I know that the session will be at 1pm for my time zone. The US is several hours behind UTC time, so the game should be on friday evening for you.

and some more:

Q) With the accelerated start, what will the turn speed be?
A) The turn limit will be the same (24 hours), but we'll obviously go a lot faster than that. If you don't like waiting (which you will have to do from time to time), I suggest running the game in windowed mode (ask me if you want to know how) and reading stuff on the net while you wait.

The 'peer pressure' against being slow should be enough to keep things moving along at a reasonable pace.

Q) Following on from that, how many turns do you expect us to take? Putting it another way, which tech level do you anticipate that the most advanced civilization might reach?
A) If you mean for the accelerated start, we'll just play till the two hours is reached (or longer if everyone is happy to keep playing on for a while), there's no particular technological target.

If you mean for the game in general, we'll play till someone wins, which will most likely mean playing till the modern age.

Q) Finally, for my own interest from a technical perspective, as I may run a PitBoss game one day, will you be running the accelerated start as a Direct IP multiplayer game and then convert it to PitBoss?
A) No, I'll just be running it as a pitboss game, which is basically the same as direct IP except the server is handled by a seperate process (and, at least in my case, a seperate computer) than the client.

Q) How do you run the game in windowed mode?
A) Instructions are here

I think for warlords the directory you go to is:
C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Warlords
instead of the one given in that link.

Interested. I'm rather newbie (maybe 10 games played, mostly Huge/Marathon, Noble (running BetterAI) is hard still, but I've still got a couple weeks to learn, and antique Civ1 knowledge to fall back on. Never played multiplayer, so I expect I'm in for a beating. At least I'll have time to think about my mistakes, assuming I live thru the 2hour rush :)

Monty probably. Tho I may change that, but if so I'll even random if necessary.

PMing info.

good good... have sent you an email.

Still looking for a few more people.

I'd like to play. I'll be a random civ/leader.

My first post on civfanatics! I've read the forums for a while though. I'd really like a proper long term multiplayer game - quick online games against quitters are so unfulfilling.

Looks like you have all 14 players, but if a slot becomes available, I'm interested in filling in.

thx,
Mark

oops, missed that. I even looked at the list.

original post does say "warlords allows duplicate leaders/civs", but just leave me on Aztecs

Would be kinda funny if about 9 of us picked the same civ tho :)

I wqould love to play if it was certain that my comp could handle a huge map. I would also prefer tech trading to be off though that is less of an issue. My comp run somewhat slow in the lategame but i dont think it would crash. Would there be lot of simulatious action that would require my comp to be acting very fast in the lategame? If it is possible to play i would chose mansa musa of the mali. 1 am is nice time to start:p as i am awake at that time most of the time anyways.

I suggest starting a new single player game on a huge map with 13 AI players, on industrial start. See how that goes and get back to me (if the spot doesn't fill up by then, otherwise I will put you down as a reserve player).

Bear in mind it's 1am UTC time, so unless you're in the same timezone as england it won't be 1am for you.

ok 2 am then:p I tried a future start on huge terra. Turns took almost half a minute to load and the game was slow in general. I didnt bother to finish it though. As we only do one turn each day will it be a problem that i am a bit slow? Doubt the game will crash

Hmm yeah it sounds as though it would be a problem for the accelerated start. I don't really care how it goes after that though, so I can put you in as a reserve player (so if you end up playing, it would be after the accelerated start)... mind you I already have one or two reserves.
