The questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread IV

I don't think they called it such. It was the Roman Empire, different provinces within the empire, and areas outside like Germania(pretty much all of mainland Europe not controlled by Rome I think) Caledonia(Scotland), Nubia, Abyssinia(Ethioppia) and so on. I don't think they named things as continents.

No I mean what place was valled Europa back then, if any? I remember there was some mythic creature called that, but when and how it came to mean Europe?

Oh, yeah I realized right after my post that I may have read your post wrong. Anyway, I still don't think the Romans called anything Europa. It was a Phoenician name I think.

Are they?

Yes, they are, exactly what I asked. Look at the difference in Dacia for one. I've always thought that the Roman Borders were the Danube River, with the little blob of Dacia sticking out as well. Also, the the Black Sea coast except for the east was a continually controlled area, but Armenia and Mesopotamia were only controlled for a very short time and thus not really considered a Roman territory.

And look at Crimea. In the first map it is completely colored in, but the one below it is not controlled at all. Finally, the last map has only a portion of it under Roman control.

That is because the kingdom of the Bosporos of the Kimmerioi was a client state of Rome, not an official territory. And Mesopotamia and Armenia were officially incorporated as provinces but had a transitory existence (less than a decade).

Your English is pretty impecable, ESB. Much better than some people who profess they have English as a native tongue, in fact.
