I voted "turn the sound off", for a very practical reason.
A few months ago, I complained that Civ3 would occasionally bog down so that actions like opening up a diplomacy screen, or getting the first unit cursor when my turn began, would hang for several minutes. This got worse with the patches I downloaded, but I had no idea what might be causing it.
Normally I play games with the sound muted on my Windows volume control. So the sounds are being generated, I just can't hear them.
Well, a few weeks ago while trying a new patch, I left the sound on for the first couple of games, just to see what it was like. I noticed that occasionally the music would hang up and endlessly loop. Well, being somewhat dense, it took me a few games to figure this out, but I thought, hey, what if this music is what's hanging up my game?
So I went into Preferences and turned all the sound off. Guess what? My hanging game problem went away! I feel so stupid for not thinking of this way back in November!
I've always been of the opinion that music and sound effects in Civilization were unnecessary, and the time and energy spent developing them could be better employed on other aspects of the game. Now I've got another point against them: they slow down gameplay, at least on my computer.
Anyone else have this problem, or am I just a crank with a crappy computer?
