at first, i always turn the sound off while i am playing, and listen to bach when i play. one day i accidentally left it on and didn't realize it until i notice that there is some pretty cool music going on in room. i don't know, i kind of like it.

i wonder do most people turn the music on or they turn it off like i do. if you turn it off, what kind of music do you think that would go w/ the game better than bach?

Most of the time I leave it on. But sometimes the music gets boring/old, so I'll turn it off and turn on the radio (country-rock music).

I keep it on sometimes, but sometimes I'd rather listen to my own music, so I find something on my computer and listen to it. :cooool:

I usually have the music off and the effects on, and listen to my own music now.

I did have it on when i started, but got bored with it after a while.

I just leave the music on, unless I'm in the mood for something else.

Music- ALWAYS OFF!!

SOUNDS- ALWAYS .. ON!!

Your poll could be worded with a little more Firaxis style precision .... :crazyeyes

But Bach DOES sound cool as the Civ music ... didn't the Wonder Movies in C-2 have some Bach in ... Bach's Catherdal Movie??

I tend to keep the music on until one of three things happens:

1) I get bored of it;
2) the sound messes up, as it does semi regularly;
3) my wife is trying to sleep.

Sound Effects tend to stay on, except as noted in 2) above.

Sound FX always on, music on until I get bored of it, which usually happens in the Modern Age.

If there is no one else home I will leave the sound on, otherwise I will just turn if off. My least favorire tune is that Kenny G sounding one they play all the time in the Modern Age.

I leave it on, maybe because I haven't been playing enough to get bored with it. I really like the Zululand music.

don't remember, i turned that off, too.

I voted "turn the sound off", for a very practical reason.

A few months ago, I complained that Civ3 would occasionally bog down so that actions like opening up a diplomacy screen, or getting the first unit cursor when my turn began, would hang for several minutes. This got worse with the patches I downloaded, but I had no idea what might be causing it.

Normally I play games with the sound muted on my Windows volume control. So the sounds are being generated, I just can't hear them.

Well, a few weeks ago while trying a new patch, I left the sound on for the first couple of games, just to see what it was like. I noticed that occasionally the music would hang up and endlessly loop. Well, being somewhat dense, it took me a few games to figure this out, but I thought, hey, what if this music is what's hanging up my game?

So I went into Preferences and turned all the sound off. Guess what? My hanging game problem went away! I feel so stupid for not thinking of this way back in November!

I've always been of the opinion that music and sound effects in Civilization were unnecessary, and the time and energy spent developing them could be better employed on other aspects of the game. Now I've got another point against them: they slow down gameplay, at least on my computer.

Anyone else have this problem, or am I just a crank with a crappy computer?

I like the music in ancient and industrial ages, but i dont like the modern ones... If i turn the music off, then i also turn the sounds off... sounds stupid with Mozart or Verdi with a swordsman fighting in the background...

But Bach DOES sound cool as the Civ music ... didn't the Wonder Movies in C-2 have some Bach in ... Bach's Catherdal Movie??

Yeah, There was Bach pipeorgan music in the wondermovie

Jimcat, I get the same slowdown problems. My computer is just under the recommended requirements, so that probably explains it. So I go for MUSIC = OFF and SOUND = OFF. But I swear it still sneaks in bird calls occasionally when I'm not concentrating.

That bird song must be like hardcoded or something. Doesn't matter what I turn off it'll chirp here and there.

Normally I play with music off and sound on. My computer meets the minimum requirement exactly and with music on it'll noticeably slow down the game.

Usually Off with smashing pumpkins playing :)
