Alot (and I use this term broadly) used a simple term ever since Hiroshima and Nagasaki was nuked "Nuke em" well lets take a look at the true power of the Atomic Bomb (Below is created by yours truly)
Spoiler :

The atomic age began on July 16, 1945 near Alamogordo, New Mexico, as a team of American scientists and reporters watched the first atomic explosions explode out of the desert in a great blinding light which later formed into a mushroom cloud.
After watching the test, one of the scientist was quoted saying "I am sure that on Doomsday, in the last millisecond, the last man on Earth will see what we have just seen", but a writer for the New York Times was quoted saying "Let their be light". (Bible reference)
Approximately 3 weeks after the atomic testing, a group of B-29 bombers prepared to take off in a American air base on the island of Tinian (Located in the Pacific Ocean). The pilot of the B-29 Bomber named his plane "Enola Gay" (His mother's name) and as we all know, the bomb itself was called "Little Boy".
The actual bomb run lasted for 4 minutes and the only words in the Co-pilot's diary were, "My God".
The bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed nearly 100,000 people instantly, another 100,000 were severely wounded. This was all out of the population of 245,000. Over more than 90% of the city was destroyed.
Three days later another atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki (estimated 40,000 people killed/missing after this bombing and 39% of the city was destroyed) and Japan immediately offered an unconditional surrender and thus ended World War II...
Survivors from the first bomb said that they all remembered a brilliant flash of blinding light, whiter than any white they had ever seen, exploding over Hiroshima. Very few recalled hearing any noise.
Whenever an atomic bomb explodes it creates a massive shockwave so powerful that it can lift people standing from over a mile away and hurl them through the air, this is followed by a wave of heat so tremendous it can start fires by spontaneous combustion and literally vaporize people if they are close enough. When Little Boy exploded over Hiroshima, the entire city seemed to disintegrate, everything from glass, tile, wood, stone, concrete (And many more) all collapsed into rubble, fires suddenly erupted everywhere. It is estimated that the temperature at the point the bomb exploded surpassed 10,000 Degrees (Fahrenheit). Within minutes, the sky that had been so bright turned dark. As thousands of people wandered about the streets, dazed, burned, and bleeding, a giant cloud covered Hiroshima. The radioactive fallout had begun. But this was only the beginning. For that those who survived the initial blast suffered great injuries and illnesses from enormous amount of radiation that fell on their cities and following the explosions. And the end of WWII didn't bring a end to their suffering.
The atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki began a nightmare that went on for generations. For years, mothers gave birth to babies who were deformed (Without toes, or fingers, or genetic mutations). Thousands apon Thousands of people developed cancer or suffered from chronic radiation sickness. The radioactive fallout that had blanketed the city seeped into the ground, polluting the water and contaminating any food grown there.
And for over 60 years, America was the only nation that used a atomic bomb in aggression to another country. But why kill innocents and civilians and woman and children to stop a war? Easy: They were desperate to end the war, and they put their own selfish lives above any other foreigner's life.
And to end this all off, here is a video (Without any words, it is very self-explanatory) that shows the true power of the atomic bomb from the viewpoint(s) of the people who suffered this fate. This video also shows the effects of underground nuclear Bomb testings and what would it look like if WWIII would erupt...(and keep in mind that Atomic bombs have greatly increased in destructive power, such as of the hydrogen bomb).

Are you turning this in to a class?

They were desperate to end the war, and they put their own selfish lives above any other foreigner's life.

Because killing millions of Japanese in a land invasion would have been significantly less selfish.

I would change "over more than 90% were killed." Take out either "over" or "more," but don't have both, it's not proper syntax.

Also, I would refrain from using such coloquial addresses as "we all know that" (which you used to refer to Little Boy), the sentence that begins with "easy:", and making side statements in parentheses, such as the final line of that to-do. Overall, I'd say it's a good summation.

If you wante to expand a bit, though, you might mention how the shockwave doubled back over Hiroshima again, because of the steep hills surrounding the town. That conributed much to the destruction of the city; 90% compared to 40%, as you said.

EDIT: I would also refrain from asserting such personal opinions and judgements, such as "They were desperate to end the war, and they put their own selfish lives above any other foreigner's life," unless the assignment specifically calls for it, and even then, make clear that such is your personal opinion, and not fact.

"But why kill innocents and civilians and woman and children to stop a war? Easy: They were desperate to end the war, and they put their own selfish lives above any other foreigner's life."

Explain how it is more honorable to kill five million by the bullet than two hundred thousand by the bomb.

Not to put a tamper on the conclusion but that's only one conclusion of many. There's no outstanding government document that says, "nuke em', I absolutely need Japanese rice in the supermarkets by December". That conclusion shouldn't be treated as the definitive 'real' answer just because.

I'm a little perplexed at understanding the point of this article. Fine, nuclear weapons are bad. Outstanding, now if only I hadn't already seen Dr. Strangelove and learned to love the bomb. :(

Without something so unopposable, we would have had to kill millions (why 5?). Surrender was not part of Japanese culture. A conventional invasion would have killed 100s of 1000s of Americans, and 1000000s more Japanese.

You really cannot ignore this in making the assessment of "selfishness".

It was, in the opinion of every historian I've encountered, the humane option (for Japan).

now if only I hadn't already seen Dr. Strangelove and learned to love the bomb. :(

What about Ozzy Osborne's "Thank God for The Bomb"?

If that's the only thing that's stopping war, then thank god for the bomb.

Studies done at the time put the American casulties at around the 2-4 million mark and Japanese were thought to be about 5-10 million FATALITIES. There's a different between casulties and fatalities. That 2-4 million casulties figure includes wounded, it doesn't for Japan.

Was it not Admiral Halsey who said after Pearl Harbour that at the wars end Japanese would only be spoken in Hell? That might have very well came true if they had to invade.

we're all used to people dying by the bullet, dying by something new tends to bring outrage.

I am well aware of the effect of a nuclear explosion, it's kinda my hobby to gather information about that. Am I supposed to be scared? I know for sure I'd never wanted to experience it myself, but I'd be happy to see it from a safe distance.

Ok, explain to me why the innocent men, women, and children deserved to die besides the hostile civilians. I don't think it would take exactly/more than 5 million to be killed if we didn't use the A-Bombs, it would only be for the war to last a little bit longer (Not to mention Soviet Russia marching down Korea and getting ready to hit Japan).

It's not the acutal dropping of the first two bombs that I diagree with. It's all the crap that came with it afterwords.

We should have just continued fire bombing. More deadly and less outrage.

Nobody said they deserved to die, only that they were going to, one way or the other.
