The Witcher

I finally have adrenaline. yay. So how do I use it? What do I do when the bar fills up?

Press X or some button (I forget :p) once the bar fills up and it does a cinematic finisher move which is pretty cool (though they didn't make more than one for each type of monster, but there are several involving guards).

Read the manual or check the keyboard configuration in the launcher menu next time you're confused.

I have the steam version (so either there is no manual or it's a PDF hidden somewhere). The keyboard config only says that E selects silver sword.

Shouldn't have bought it on Steam. CDProjekt has it on Good Old Games (they own it) without any DRM (retail version was stripped of its DRM pretty fast too). You'll have all the extra goodies (cool map, paper craft, manual, game guide, etc) as .pdf files though.

E doesn't select a silver sword for me and I didn't change it, so use whatever it does say then :p

Just so that we're on the same page here: are we talking about the Witcher 1 or the Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings? I'm talking about the first one (bought it at a Steam christmas sale for 4€).

that's completely different then. :)

In TW1 to block you use the right mouse button I think (or is that signs?). I know there's a way to do it. I mainly only used blocking in TW1 on fistfights.

I don't remember you could even block in TW1.
Anyway I didn't need to block to finish the game.

@Hehehe : regardless, both TW1 and TW2 are on GoG, and both are without copy protection.

Thanks, good to know. And I figured out that right mouse button blocks but only if you don't have a sign selected. Can't figure out how to de-select a sign though

Hold shift, it makes the mouse pointer appear on-screen, and then you can click on the signs in the left edge.

blocking is good on fistfights in TW1, you won't take a scratch. Not that ff's are that hard.

I'm close to the end of chapter two in TW2 now. A quick question. Are there any must have talents? I took all of my talents in the swordsmanship tree. There are so many cool ones there. 5% instant death. I think I got an instant death (my combat log is off so I'm not sure) kill on the hard battle near the end of Baltimore's Nightmare quest. First attempt I wasn't ready and had no potions in me, and lost, but second battle I easily won. I think I even got two instant death kills there. First time I tried to use a finisher, but it wouldn't let me for some reason.

Are there any signs need for tough battles at the end?

another quick question. in the quest log, why do some quests have little shield icons around them (on the left side of the quest name), and others don't?

I had combat log on the whole time and rarely even noticed it :p

You should be fine just leveling up swordsmanship if you want, there are only 30 levels. However, blocking arrows was a pointless skill to take.

yeah I took one in blocking arrows, and figured a second is kind of useless. archers go down so easily. The only guys that are harder to kill are guys with shields, or guys with 2 swords.

I've been mainly taking offensive over defensive, but I may have a couple spare left over. Next game I'll go the sign route. alchemy has a couple interesting ones, but most don't interest me. They need to buff that tree up. Effects only when you are poisoned? That makes no sense to me.

ugh, I'm stuck at the end of chapter 2. Which brings up another pet peeve of mine. Games that force you to play characters other than the protagonist. I guess I've been spoiled spending most of the game with witcher abilities and nice sword moves. Being forced to play as this ghost is difficult. I'm getting my ass beat. I read a walkthru, and it says your buddies should take care of the other mobs, while you beat on the standard bearer. That isn't happening, they are all beating on me, not to mention arrows. :(

Just let me play as Geralt please, stop forcing me into other roles.

I'll check out a youtube video to see if I can get thru this.

The ones with the shield are main quests, the ones without are side quests.

When it says "poisoned" what it means is potion toxicity. So as long as you have potions in you those talents are active, which makes perfect sense in the alchemy tree.

Level 1 arrow blocking is totally worth it for the mutagen slot, most of the abilities in that tree are sucky anyway and you have to take a certain number of them, there aren't any better choices so you might as well grab the mutagen slot.

You can? Well that's good to know, I've played two chapters already and I was starting to wonder if there is any way to block...

In The Witcher 1 blocking is automatic and is based on your stats, if you are taking too much damage put some talents into your Dexterity tree, there are talents there to increase dodge and parry rates. You can also pop Blizzard potions before tough fights for extra untouchableness.

ahh, the poisoned makes much more sense now. Thanks. I was going to say, I'm not poisoned by monsters all that much.

I finally got passed the first part of that Eternal Battle quest. I'm just taking a break. I really hate quests like these. They aren't fun. Thankfully it saves after that part. I was really going to be pissed if they made me do that whole sequence again. But this is an unfun part of the game for me. I'm posting here putting off doing the sucky stuff to hopefully get to the good stuff again. For some reason my third try in that battle went much easier. I took like no damage. I don't understand that. The other two times I was getting pounded by 4 guys at once.

edit: did the second part, now I'm stuck in the battle with the daug. Although I think I know how to do this hopefully. But I haven't had much luck getting behind him like the guide says.

one battle I got him down halfway, the other 4 battles I can't even do a scratch to him. I suck. :(

Finally got it. It took me about 9 tries. I really don't like reloading so much, but I didn't want to drop down to easy. I'm just not big on games that require reloads to learn the best strategy.

You need to use your silver sword on him, quite often in that fight Geralt automatically draws his steel sword for some reason instead. Also you can flank him and attack him there instead of having to bash down the shield. Its actually a surprisingly easy fight (I figured it out on my 3rd attempt) even on Normal.

I guess I was lucky, I did that fight on hard and it only took me two tries. I've seen a lot of people commenting on the difficulty of that fight and I just don't get it.

The problem with this fight is that each time you die, you need to re-live the minutes-long pre-fight showdown.

The fight itself is extremely easy once you know what to do, but if you don't, you die pretty quickly.

Basically, you have to put your back on a wall and wait for the charge, possibly moving around to avoid arrows. Once the boss charge, you dodge, put yourself in his back and hack him. He goes down VERY quickly, perhaps three or four strikes in normal.
Do NOT bother to strike him outside of the "charge-stunned against the wall" routine. It's not worth it, and it's probably the reason why many people find him hard.
