As we all know, some bombardment units have an "rate of fire" higher than one, and this enables them to inflict more than one point of damage on a target unit.

But does anyone know exactly how this work? I mean, does a unit with a rate of fire of two get to make two separate attacks, or does it get to make one extra if the first hits, or does it simply make a single attack that inflicts 1-2 damage randomly if it hits? What I see in the game seems to suggest the latest, but does anybody actually know?

I believe it is a single attack that can inflict 1-2 points of damage. I get to watch it often--artillery is great stuff, great stuff.

i think it means 2 separate goes at the same thing like it could be an attack on a city one go they destrot a barraks then another go they weaken /kill a unit

Have you actually seen a single bombardment both destroy a barracks and hurt a unit? Of the quite considerable bombardment attacks I've subjected AI cities to, certainly not one has hit more than one target.

No i put what i thought might happen not what would actually happen and im sorry if anyone took this advice and thought that it might work but im sure last comformist that you have sometimes given some bad advice

After I built the in-ground pool, my neighbor's side yard culture flipped to me. Culture flipping rocks!

 That makes about as much sense as what happens in the game! Why not add one of those new BOSE CD players; maybe then his porch will also flip to you?

Or a few trees, too. Make your house more aetheistically pleasing. Then you might get his, as well.

anyway, rate of fire means how much damage it can inflict. so a ROF of 2 means it can take 0, 1 or 2 HP off a unit

I made a modded radar artillery unit with a rate of fire of 10, bombard strength of 1000 and lethal bombard. I attacked a stack of 25 regular warriors and it killed only one and did not damage any of the others. Also I didn't see 9 "bombardment failed" messages. So I think you are right, and this raises the question, what is "rate of fire" for? The editor says it means number of "attacks per turn." I guess this means that, in the internal program logic, it "shoots" X times and inflicts either 0 or 1 points of damage each time.

bombard strength of 1000? Cool. It's like they're firing non-nuclear missiles that pack the same punch!

Not really. Sounds strong, but it's just the probability of inflicting 1 point of damage to a single unit.

I've seen it with planes, especially Stealth bombers destroy sometimes two buildings. So I think it's 2 attacks!

Stealth bomber doesn't seem to attack 2 units in a stack, or attack 2 things in a city if there are are military units in it. How often does this occur? Can you post a saved game?

Speaking of lethal bombardment, if I gave the F15 lethal bombardment, would it be able to trigger a Golden Age?

I don't see why not. The man o war can trigger a golden age for the english by sinking a ship. Haven't tried it, though.

But usually, by the time jets appear, you have built some wonder that triggers the golden age.
