OOC: EQ why is it that when I implement massive social and government backed reforms, I get no drop in dissent and no IC increase, but Nicaragua completes a canal and his IC is increased by almost 50%? Hell, I didn't even get an IC boost when the Panama Canal was completed.
Because I've been implementing them for 4-5 updates, because I have brought in outside investment, because I role played bringing in Economic Minds and Engineering Minds and then used their theories, not my own. Also, I have yet to get a drop in descent. All I have gotten is an economic boost by identifying a soon to form wave and choosing to ride it. I built the canal when i did because the ATO created an opening for a second canal. Your alliances exclusionary tactics and rapid globalization made it all possible. Also, you have to keep in mind the size of our two nations. There is such a vast difference. My nation is the size of New England if not smaller, perhaps New York. You are a union of 70+ states now with vastly different ideologies, different parties, and huge swaths of territory.
Also, the Panama Canal wasn't immediately this huge deal. The Nicaragua Canal connects trade routes I had already built, with the intent to connect them. The Panama Canal was built and then waited for Business to come to it, whereas the Nicaraguan Canal was built for business that already existed, to meet a demand. I built up ties, not burned them, and then used it. I modernized and industrialized my country through a combination of public and private spending. I used my funds in directed measures to further my long term plans and to fulfill my view of Nicaragua. I want a peaceful nation, and that's what i've been trying to build.
Overall, I would say the difference in size, the difference in composition, the difference in government and the difference in time all factored into the differences you highlighted. It is definitely not a player thing, but a nation thing.
Edit: and what EQ said. But I still like my wordy explaination better

I urge that EQ make it his!
