Hi!

Lets all put our heads together to find the world's most perfect alarm clock!

For the purpose of this thread, the world's most perfect alarm clock is defined as an alarm clock that has at least the following features:

-AM/FM radio
-sensitive or digital dial on the radio so that I can get to the channels I want easily.
-a large display with adjustable dimmer
-fits the general aesthetic motif of fifty's room
-a small overall size/weight
-a cost less than $35 including shipping

would be cool but not necessary:
-CD player integrated
-Alarm that starts quiet and slowly gets louder

Wake n' Bacon FTW.

by Matty Sallin, Daniel Bartolini, Hsiao-huh Hsu

WHAT: An alarm clock that wakes you up with the smell and sizzle of cooking bacon.

WHY: No one likes to wake up, especially by an alarm. This clock gently wakes you up with the mouthwatering aroma of bacon, just like waking up on a Sunday morning to the smell of Mom cooking breakfast. Unless you're Jewish.

HOW: A frozen strip of bacon is placed in Wake n' Bacon the night before. Because there is a 10 minute cooking time, the clock is set to go off 10 minutes before the desired waking time. Once the alarm goes off, the clock it sends a signal to a small speaker to generate the alarm sound. We hacked the clock so that the signal is re-routed by a microchip that in responds by sending a signal to a relay that throws the switch to power two halogen lamps that slow-cook the bacon in about 10 minutes.

The perfect alarm clock is the one that is only an alarm and a clock. A loud alarm, sufficient to wake even the deepest sleeper. There are other appliances for the other features you mentioned, unless you desire to have an alarm clock that so over-bloated with features that it requires a touch screen display to input commands.

The best alarm clock is one that wakes you. For me, one is not enough. I need:

1) My watch alarm, preferably not on my hand
2) My cellphone alarm, ridiculously annoying but effective
3) My actual alarm clock, set to radio rather than alarm, since alarm doesn't get louder in volume, whereas radio can be put to maximum volume
4) My laptop set to play some music at the desired time, really really loud, and in sleep mode such that you don't hear other sounds while you try to sleep

That is almost always sufficient, although I usually only use 2 or 3 of those until I stop getting up or unless I'm about to get very little sleep.

Instead of alarms there are simulated sunrises which wake you up naturally.

There is nothing natural about a simulated sunrise.

Why the analogue radio? Digital baby, all the way.

FWIW I used to load up the espresso machine on a timer plug next to the bed and set the radio alarm for a couple of mins earlier. Then set a vile screaming alarm for a couple of mins later.

Wake up listening to the today show burble. Listen to espresso splutter. Scent of fresh coffee tickles the mind... Evil death alarm screams like a truck loaded with pigs crashing - jump up to beat alarm with great violence. In mild shock take espresso and slump back to bed, but deep down knowing that really you are awake by now. Lot of hassle, but it worked like a dream.

Keeping the alarm clock on the other side of the room works too. This way you can't just roll over and turn off the loud noise. You actually have to get up and walk across the room to return the silence. By then you have already got up and walked across the room..

...and your bacon is crispy and flavorful.

On a search for "world's greatest alarm clock", I came across this flying alarm clock, which would be great for me because I'm always falling asleep at the stick.

This one (Dutch/English link) http://www.bowling-products.com/avantec/AlarmClock.htm

It measures when you are in REM-sleep and wakes you up at the perfect time for your body and mind to wake up. So you'll always feel well rested and active when the alarm clock wakes you.

It's over $35 dollars though.

Recently been out in the woods and I have the perfect plan: an alarm clock that releases a colony of army ants! That'd get people up. Might end in a lawsuit though...

Can you really beat being awoke by your girlfriend giving you head?

My alarm has all of those features except for the sensitive dial, and the cost. Actually, I got it as a gift, so I don't know much about the cost aspect.

I usually wake up to Mozart or Beethoven or Tchaikovsky....normally Sleeping Beauty, but sometimes Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (sp?).
