with a catapult, you don't lose the unit if it doesn't perform, you can use it again next time.

No I do think that if you place an explorer in enemy territory they will ask you to remove it.

They ask you to move them, but they don't actually demand you move for a long time. So you can still use them for a fair period of time before you're forced to withdraw (or declare war).

Well I've always been the warmonger type, not really too bothered about my own rep if I'm the biggest and strongest civ in the world. It really depends how bad you need to win that war.

Explorers are most definitely NOT useless! For a very cheap cost in shields, you get a unit that can travel deep into enemy territory for pillaging or scout for your other units. When fighting a defensive war, I often like to have an explorer range out into the fog so I can see what is coming my way and deal with it before it gets there. When fighting an offensive war, I like sending an explorer along with the stack of attackers to do the same thing. They can do a lot if you use them creatively!

Catapults are almost useless on offense, but they can really, really help when defending against overwhelming odds. Try playing an "Always War" game if you don't believe me.

Probably the only useless units are the Paratrooper and Helicopter, simply because there are more efficient ways to attack in virtually all cases.

catapults are useful for romans and greeks. Both get an early ga and you can build them fairly easily and they proceed with both the legion and hoplite. Particularly the hoplite is a great defender and with a few archers, you have a great offensive grouping(hoplites, archers and catapults in equal numbers).

I can see where explorers are or could be useful but I have never played a civ that have them....

the f15 seems not very useful for the time it comes into service, the americans should get m1 abrams...

The man-o-war is kinda useless due to the lack of sea units during that time and the need for them, the english should get an improved long bow man, giving a +1 to attack...

The cossack is not all that great, imo. Tanks are not that far off and the advantage of a cossack is not all that big of a deal if you place the unit correctly.

The best UU are those that dominate for a long duration in the game. I guess this depends on what difficulty level and how many civs are at war...

I voted Explorer 'cos it's absolutely useless for what's supposed to be it's main use (ie exploring), but I do recognize that it can be valuable in other rôles.

How the heck can the Man'O'War figure on this poll when the reg'lar Frigate does not?!? The Man'O'War significantly stronger for the same cost.

Paras and Helis would perhaps be worthwhile if they didn't require an optional tech. Why would anyone research Advanced Flight rather than the Modern techs?

I've never built Stealth Fighter, Stealth Bomber, Radar Artillery or AEGIS Cruiser, since all my games've been over when they come around.

Longbowmen seems pretty pointless unless you're in deep trouble resourcewise. The AI doesn't agree, tho' - I've seen Persia build 'em when having access to Iron. Go figure ...

This depends on the order you research techs, to make best use of it, you should research the path to your UU first. Iron working is usually my first as the persians (unless i'm miles away from any mountains or hills), or pottery then iron working.

Helicopters can be quite usefull on a continents or archipelago map. Use it to transport marines, paratroopers and infantry to overseas cities in which corruption prevents you building airport. Just load-up and rebase, it's much quicker than a transport.

Helicopters are the reason I build marines and paratroopers at all since you can't load a tank in a helicopter.

Longbowmen are not at all worthless. If you are behind in the game and your science sucks and you really need a war going to capture some cities and blackmail for techs and you don't have chivalry, then you can pump out tons of Longbowmen and kill a civ. They don't cost much(shields) compared to knights and if you have nothing else they can really save your ass.

Impys!

They're more like a fast warrior, and I just use them as scouts. Once the AI gets bronze working, it's too late, and catapults do next to no damage!

the Jet fighter is useful, very useful. It can stop the enemy bombing all your cities and destroying your improvements. it's very annoying and can set you back a long way. As UU's go though, the f-15 doesn't offer much.

I also agree on the chariot. the one benefit of the war chariot is it's price which means you can crank out huge numbers in wartime, (plus extra bonus from likely golden age).

I don't use nukes, but the tactical nuke is just fine. If you're sub spots a stack of ships sailing toward you, you can blow the crap outta them.

I dunno about cossacks cos i haven't played as russia at all i don't think.

My List goes
1) Privateer
2) F-15
3) Chariot
4) Explorer
5) Frigate/Man-O-war

explorer. They just come in too late.
helicopters. by the time u are able to make them, infantry will be useless in both offense and defense
paratroopers
"great, i can land some paratroppers behind enemy lines in here there and ....there....."
10 second later
"oh no! this square is occuied by enemy.Noooooooo!!!"
"this one too. God help us"
" at least these two landed safely"
Next turn
"no! the enemy are attacking my para. Rest in peace"
"attack! my last hope!!! Go!!!!................Rest in peace."
