The WORST Unit!

I think Civ1 doesn't have bad units, it's perfectly balanced. Civ2&3 have so many units that about 1/3 of them is quite useless and the balance is far to find.

And I can build 8 phalanxes in the time in takes to build your battleship (of course they'd be 5 riflemen by then). One of them will take out your battleship!

Sure they're strong but they're a waste of time. I've never needed one to win at Emperor level.

Yeah, that's where the fabled Spearman got his start! Defeating the battleships of Civ1 (under the guise of "Phalanx".

It's been a long while since I played (and only on chieftain at that... once on Emperor, and lost to the Greeks). So, I don't know what I built and didn't.

I'd say calvary. Thier attack strength is too weak to make an impact and they get killed easily. Knights and chariots flat-out outclass them.

It's not worth learning three more technologies to build a knight unit that has a measly one extra defense point.

I never research cavalry or chivalery in the beginig but after I have Nuclear Fision to go to future Tecnology and refuce the list of unit to build cavalry I get always some free and buy more with my diplomate exelent combination for exploring and second row siege to starve the city to the size without having disorder:goodjob:

I've noticed that there are 4 pairs of civ 1 ground attacking units:
> (fast - strong)
> cavalry - legion
> chariot - catapult
> knight - cannon
> armor - artillery

So the first ones are the worst I should say. Besides I agree with everyone who doesn't want to research "needless technologies".

I never build:
-Fighters, because I can wait for Bombers
-Militia, because I can wait for Legions, who are cheap, and strong.
-Caravans, because i forget them.
-Ironclads, dont know why.

I think that fighters are the worst units. you can't use them. battleships I use for terrorising the coast of the enemy, and cruisers too. in the beginning, i use militas for disabling civ disordered. caravans i use to complete wonders.

Caravans to complete wonders could be necessary if you have a wonder race of some sort. Example: Manhattan Project.
Since I always play on chieftain I usually have MP before they even discover Refinining.

No I dont complete the Manhattan Project by caravan, since there is no haste. I dont buy it either. It's to expensive. Maybe you should think about that too!

I never build legions. The catapult is such a better unit.

Submarine, ironclad, cruiser, battleship
- because bombers on carrier are better (cheaper, stronger and faster)

Trirem, sail, frigate
- because i never colonize other islands, because of JSBach :crazyeye:

Militia
- because in democracy they dont turn unhappy into content ;)

Legion, Catapult, Cannon
- because they're too slow, and therefore, can be attacked :(

Fighter
- because i never saw a ennemy bomber to shot

Fighters are a great unit to get rid of all those pesky enemy diplomats trying to sneak into your territory - while they're still on their own territory. :p I had games where I killed dozens of diplomats with but one fighter. And since they may pass enemy units without being stopped by this control zone you "point & click"-sneak your way through the enemy lines. :)

Subs are lousy - but then, this is the case in all Civ versions

Catapults, Cannons, and Artillery are almost useless on the battlefield unless you've got quicker forces with them to either defend them from attack (they don't defend well) or move in once the catapult/cannon/artillery has destroyed existing city defenders.

Having said that, though, I've never built an Ironclad. I guess if you've got a sea full of Frigates, Sails, and Triremes, Ironclads would be great. As such, though, I usually wait until I develop Steel (and Battleships) before really starting to invade off-shore lands.

I love Cruisers, though. They're great for tracking down and killing Barbarian frigates and are great explorers or escorts for costly Carriers and Battleships (which I prefer to use for coastal bombardment).
