Things You Miss Most!

Well, I am certainly finding CIV4 the most fun civilization yet! Some of my favourite parts as well as the cool new animations are the more complex system of culture and the changes to health and war weariness, making it much more fun! The opponents are also more interesting and realistic to play.

But even though it's the best yet, there are still some things about previous versions you miss right!?

For me the big one is something that has been missing for a few versions now, but I found it very interesting and fun - and also realistic.

One is the restarting of computer players as a new replacement civ if you destroy them early on.

The other, that used to be really cool (but I think only existed in the original civ and never since) was when you captured an enemy capital and the civilization split in two. I miss that, it was fun!

And also realistic, if you capture a capital that has been the capital for hundreds or thousands of years, full of infrastructure, history and bureaucracy it should have big effects for the civ whose capital it was!

In one of my own early civ 4 games, my capital got captured and I barely even noticed it happened!

Anyone else miss this? or any other things?

The thing I miss the most is being able to watch what the AI is doing as they were doing it. It was fun to watch in Civ 3 but it is non-existent in Civ 4. I am still hoping that either the Expansion or the patch will allow for us to "spectate" a match between the AI Civs.

I miss being able to steal technology with Spies. Isn't this the most fundamental job of a spy? Heck, I miss being able to take a tech from an opponent if you captured one of their cities. They could always make it a little less powerful, like say, the city would have to be a certain size before you could get a tech from it. It would encourage you to take out some of the big cities first.

Trading is quite boring in IV. It's always this "we don't like you enough" or "we're afraid you're getting too advanced" (even though they're 3-4 techs ahead). You can't trade successive techs now, you have to wait one round by which you may have lost the trading ability. You want to trade with 2 other civs but as you trade with one of them, the other no longer want to trade his stuff because you traded with his "worst" enemy (that he's in peace with and trades with himself). :(

Yeah! Capturing a city ought to enable you to "learn" a technology.
I think it has happened repeatedly in history. Heck, even being attacked by a "superiour" technology has allowed some civilizations to learn that "tech".

I miss the AI conqueror civs actually having a massive empire, instead of just a few cities. I would like to see Genghis with over 70 cities, building the big war engine. That would be cool (provided I wasn't anywhere nearby).

Other things:
Spies stealing tech
Huge armies
Old style civ2 air warfare
Cruise missiles
The good old blatent advantages that were given. Now the advantages are in small increments. I don't have a problem with that, but I just remember being given solid abilities instead of an increase in percentages of such and such.

Oh, and that splitting the empire when a civ's capital was taken was also in civ2, I think. I have never played Civ1 and I do remember it so it must be in two.

Colonies. I loved building colonies.

There is a tech stealing modification out there which works quite nicely.

I miss naval bombardment of land improvements. SERIOUSLY miss cruise missles and wouldn't mind caturing a capital means civil war in that civ.

Spies could be more use in CIV4 too, agree.

-cruise missiles, tactical nukes, nuclear submarine, privateer, paratrooper, chinook, aegis cruiser, man o war.
-i miss the probe team from AC instead of CIV3 and CIV4 pissing espionage system

Volcanoes, they added an interesting element in terrain management and city placement, plus, one of my fondest moments in Civ3 was seeing an enemies capital being destroyed by a volcano.

Colonies, you might of lost the worker, but it did at least mean that you didn't have to spam cities in order to secure resources.

Ranged artillery, its stupid that artillery units have to attack right next to the city, the whole purpose of them is to attack from distance.

I really miss:
Colonies
Ranged Artillery/Navel bombardment of tiles!
Armies
Celts......

I'm hoping some of these things will be included in the "Warlords xp" but overall I really enjoy Civ4 over Civ3!!!

I agree with the tech stealing. Also,

Bribing a shipload of units with a diplomat,
cities to revolt with a diplomat
Rushing wonders with caravans,
Armies,
armies,
and more armies.

I really love 4,,,,, but dang if this thread doesn't make ma wanna load up a game of 2 and 3.

I agree with Bongo-Bongo the artillery should be ranged . Acatapalt one square away ,cannon two squares artilery 3 squares or something like that the one wonder I miss is the adam's trading post paying for the upkeep of certain buildings made it a very important wonder if you were a warmoger. more nmoney more troops

I miss armies and privateers -pirates gave you somethong to do even when you were following a peaceful strategy.

Things I miss most: Civ3!
Things I won't miss: Civ4!
