Things You Miss Most!

What I miss most:

*the civ1 and 2 style diplomat and spy
*civil war when capturing an enemy capital.
Both of the above for the same reason: They gave smaller civs a better chance to beat the bigger ones.
*Babylonians! Who on earth decided they didn't deserve to be in the game?!? I played with the Babylonians in Civ1, 2 and 3, and now I'm forced to play some other civ... :(

And also some minor things mentioned in this thread likt the barbarian leader and so ;)

The thing that they should bring back is the ability to have more of a give & take peace so that this does not happen:

That's a GREAT idea ~ like a war chief uniting two disparate cities into an empire to stand the test of time...very civ-esque ~

and i miss diplomats, w/the top hat and cane!

and I miss FANATICS, the funadmentalist's "UU"!!

Exactly, my impression is that Civ4 have a lower Point of No Return, i.e. the point where it is practically impossible for you to win (except, maybe, with the UN) than I e II (never played III. In Civ I e II you thi point was much harder to reach, even if you faced a much larger empire you could try to max your taxes to get a lot of cash and send diplomats to steal techs and subvert cities, not easy but possible. Maybe it was a strategy easily abused but then I'd prefer that they changed something to make it more balanced than to eliminate it totally.

BTW, if anyone interessed I just wanted to say that Civ I run perfectly under Dosbox. Just so you know. :)

All of this may be possible with the SDK, if we ever get it.
On the same note (but it is OT for this thread) I'd like if cities with unhappy citizens had a chance to revolt and turn indipendent (i.e. "barbarian") it should be a very small chance, but I'd like to have an immediate reason to keep my people happy. As things are now if you have unhappy people you can just wait that they starve themselves to a smaller size.
And maybe a chance of a plague for cities with unhealth, a plague that could spread to other cities via trade routes.
But as I said, it is OT here.

I want zones of control back... and superior fortifications! If you know a big war's coming in the modern ages, it'd be sweet to turn all those farms outside your city limits into trenches and bundle your defensive units out there so your precious city doesn't get damaged in the fighting (Have buildings destroyed when you attack rather then when you capture)...

I dont miss armies, with 3 properly equipped armies you were pretty much unstopable, while i see sun tzu as a game changer in the same aspect as well i still miss it.

I miss:
shipfulls of barbs landing next your capitol
ransomable barbarian leaders
civil wars
the civ2 advisors

(Civ 2): I miss being able to nuke a city, destroying all the troops and then sending in the paratroopers to take the city!

(Civ 3): Buying/Selling Contact with a 3rd Civ to another Civ

Colonies. I loved building colonies.

QUOTE]

Most people found colonies pretty useless in CIv III. I like how do they implement colonies on SMAC, with those things, I cannot remember its name, you could harvest minerals or food for a city from a square beyond the fat cross, so your city could grow even more. It is a pity you don't have anything similar in Civ III or Civ IV.

I also miss the naval warfare from Civ III.

The issue is that concepts like 0CC or 5CC aren't helped with the no-colonies in Civ4. I would suggest to change this for limited city builds to make those variants viable.

I miss
- the diplomat and building embasies.
- stealing tech with spy
- gaining tech when invading city
- the babarian leader (now will you stay put!!)
- ranged artillery
- the advisors
- the civ1 style throne room

and something I don't think you other guys mentioned: I like the way the defeated leaders were shown beated up once the game was finished - think that was civ2. And their silly comments like "well get you next time" and "thats so unfair"...

ouaip t'as super raison mec!
i totally agree with you:
the way happiness and health is working now in civ4 is quite good but i would love to stress a little thus it would be very good to have a small chance of big disaster like a plague or a revolt.
(juste like a nuclear meltdown for example)
that would be supa cool!!!! :goodjob:

I miss the advisor screen that showed the garrison in each city. The new unit location screen is wonderful, but it doesn't do that job. For me, the lack of it is one of the few examples of something that has become more unfun - having to go round every now and then to check each individual city in a large empire.

I miss

Colonies (3)
Barbarian Invasions (2)
Airbases (2 & 3)
Paratroopers (2 & 3)
Helicopter (as transport) (3)
Ranged Artillery (AC & 3)
Spies/Probe Teams (AC & 2)
Privateers (3)

I love

Civics (Why the hell weren't they included in 3, they were in AC???)
Religion (it adds an extra reason as to why other Civs won't/will like you)
Some AI cheating fixes (Anyone notice the AI galleys can't just zoom all over the planet any more)

Ooh, I miss a few things.

The Ruler's Palace
Colonies
Civ II Advisors
Civ III Diplomacy advisor who'd say whether a leader would accept a trade
Carthage
Babylon
Partisans
Zulu
Paratroopers

I like ranged artillery, cruise missile, precision air strikes and the ability to steal technology and also better tech trading system.
