think i screwed it up

got Civ IV the other day been playing it for a few days. went to see if there was a update on there was. downloaded the 1.74 patch i think it was then went to install it and it froze up. so i just shut the computer down for the night. was looking at other forums about manually deleting the files tried that and it didnt work. now when i put the disk in and the screen that has comes up first where it says play, i click on that and it does nothing the screen just disappears and im left sitting at the desktop. any ideas?????????????????????

think i am just going to wait till i upgrade to windows 7, then just reinstall it again.
but the reason why it started screwing up was I was installing the 1.74 patch and it got all the way to the end and just stopped.
Is there anything i need to worry about running CIV IV on windows 7? my computer can either run 32 or 64 bit. Does CIV IV run on 64bit?

it does run on 64 bit - however have a look through the windows 7 experiences thread in this subforum.
Essentially:
install into c:\games\
install with admin rights (i.e. right click on the setup.exe on the disc and choose run as admin - do not use the autoplay feature to install)
and patch the game to 1.61 then to 1.74 both with admin rights
